WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CAMERA APP

I downloaded both Hipstamatic and Camera+ over the weekend.
I have to say, I had to spend more $$ on extra film and lenses in Hipstamatic to get anything good out of the app.

Hipstamatic = Great B&W filters and frames. I haven't caught on to this 70's Retro photo thing yet. For aged photos of classic cars, trains or old buildings - it's amazing ! I also haven't figured out why it forces you to view your subject through the tiny the viewfinder. My favorite setting so far is Lucifer VI lense with BlacKeys B+W. I'm sure shooting historical buildings will be amazing using this setting.

Camera+ = I can use this app for all types of photos. You can even adjust exposure using a second finger while your first finger selects the focus of your subject. I wish Camera+ offered more frames similar to frames Hipstamatic offers, but App is great for $2.

I think you get more for the initial $2bucks with Camera+ in comparison to Hipstamatic. I haven't purchased all the lenses and borders/film in Hipstamatic yet. There maybe some hidden surprises in Hipstamatic after i purchase every feature, but then i'm up to $6+ bucks for a photography iphone app.

How do you import a pic from Camera+ into Hipstamatic?

I swear, the pics I've taken with Camera+ and a few with Hipstamatic (just got it last night) have all come out great. To the non-i4 owners that see my pics they automatically think they were taken from my ultra-expensive Lecia digital. That's crazy.

You can't import photos already taken into Hipstamatic to edit.

I agree with you on Hipstamatic. I really enjoy this app but I spent $10 (I think) on all the add ons because what it comes with isn't much. You need those other filters/lenses/flashes to make something cool.

Camera+ has served me very well but I also wish it came with a lot more frames, etc... like Hipstamatic but then again they all gotta make $.

I think I went a little overboard with Hipstamatic, I didn't expect to spend a lot on a photo app but hey, I'm addicted...

I really like these! What lens/flash/frame did you use for the picture of the girl and the drain?

Thanks :)
Sink was Helga Viking, with Float film, flash off
Girl was Roboto Glitter, with Alfred Infrared, flash off.

Does the flash you choose not actually do anything unless the camera flash is on? Cause sometimes the camera flash just makes it way too bright (iPhone 4 of course)

Bought Hipstamatic, Camera+ and Pic Grunger because of this thread :)

This is Elvis at the dogpark hogging the water bowl using whatever Hipstamatic's default filters are.

is HDR Pro hard to use? Is it hard to take two pictures without moving the camera at all?

I just grabbed it yesterday. I took 3 photos with it. At first glance, it worked extremely well. After looking more closely (ie zooming in), I realized that 2 of the 3 weren't actually aligned very well. They're close, but not perfect. But the one that was is fantastic. I also noticed some other oddities. For example, I had the garage in the background and it clearly tried to lighten that area. But while doing so, some of that spread to the surrounding siding on the house. So around the garage door there is a halo effect.

I think it's a great tool under the proper conditions. Moving subjects are obviously out since you need two photos to paste together. And if you're doing closeup work, you would need to be very careful. Hopefully their algorithm to line up the photos will get some work. I would guess that a photo of something like a forest (at a distance) would come out better since any alignment issues wouldn't be as obvious.

Still, I feel it was a good purchase and I don't regret picking it up. It's just not the right tool for every occasion.

Great thread with some really amazing pics. I'm so impressed with the camera on this phone and the results from a few filters.

I've noticed a distinct lack of kittens so far, so here is a pic of my Mums new one!

Taken using stock camera app and then filtered in Camera+

Impressive, what filters did you use?

You probably spent more like $6 if you bought everything. I originally bought just the app ($2) and realized that I wasn't too impressed with it. I decided to purchase the Shibuya Hipstapak and I have been loving these photos. If you purchase any accessories you will get the entire pack and there are only 4 packs ($1 each):

Williamsburg Hipstapak
- Helga Viking Lens
- Pistil Film
- Primary Gel Pack

The Partland Hipstapak
- Lucifer VI Lens
- BlackKeys B+W Film

Shibuya Hipstapak
- Roboto Glitter Lens
- Berry Pop Flash
- Float Film

Camder Hipstapak
- Alfred Infrared Film
- BlackKeys SuperGrain B+W Film

Thanks :)

I noticed before the iPhone 4 update, you could activate the flash and it would apply the flash effect without actually using the LED flash since previous iPhones don't have built-in flash. After the recent update, it uses the flash even though I just want to apply the effect. Someone pointed out that they will have a toggle of some sort in a future update.

I did however use this app at a party at night a couple of days ago, and having a flash on the iPhone was amazing. Before I wouldn't have been able to have any useable pictures since it would be too dark out, and now I have great vintage-looking photos.

EDIT: I also want to point out that they need to fix some bugs such as when exiting the app while in the photo viewing menu. If I go back into the app, it usually takes a really long time to load or will get stuck there.

Here's an example. First you touch a bright area to pick up the bright spots. Notice the dark areas are too dark to see and lose a lot of detail.

Next you touch a dark spot to pick up the details from that part of the image. The bright spots are now all washed out.

Finally the app combines the two:

As you can see, it did a decent job lining things up. The there's a glowing halo effect around the garage that doesn't look quite right.

You don't have to not move the camera at all. It will line them up for you. But the better you do, the better it will do I assume.

camera+ has been updated. big thing for me is highlighted

So what's new.

greatly improved usability of our exclusive Touch Exposure and Touch Focus features so that you can now move around the controls once you lift your fingers, hopefully resulting in far fewer cases of pretzel-finger
fixed a bug where the camera shutter button would stop functioning
fixed a bug where double flash & flip controls would appear in the camera screen
fixed a bug where there was a dead area with Touch Exposure and Touch Focus
fixed a bug where the main screen shutter button wasn’t working
fixed a bug where copying photos that were zoomed would result in unzoomed photos when pasting them
fixed a bug where Touch Exposure and Touch Focus were using incorrect touch points if the camera was zoomed
increased maximum zoom amount to 6× “You want the zoom? You Can’t handle the zoom!”
various minor bug fixes and enhancements

Just got the update too. Haven't fired it up yet, but I am happy that I won't have to contort my fingers now.

I like the last line in the update text too, about how they are going into features mode for 1.3 :D

Here are a few that I shot with Hipstamatic and then did some messin with them in Camera+

Wondering if this is more of a 30+ year old fascination. These faded, scratched and bent pictures brings back a nostalgic feeling of photos my parents kept of me growing up in their albums. But for you newer generation that's only seen mostly digital, and rarely film or even paper, is it cool or silly?

It's cool. I'm 22 and for whatever reason, I feel kind of nostalgic too. It reminds me of my parent's childhood pics, especially the red lens (I forgot what it's called in Hipstamatic).

I was wondering the same.
30 here.

I'm really liking the Hipstamatic app. Here's a pic of the Ferguson Center For The Arts in Newport News, Va. I love these arches.

I'm a bit older in my 30s and I grew up on a camera. I never had any old school pics but as a kid my father owned a Leica M3 Special and he took a ton of pics in the 70s-80s so some of his pics look like the Hipstamatic renderings. He gave me his Canon F1 Navy (I remember it was called) back in 1988 and I just started snapping away. That broke and I got a cheapo Konica Tomato camera in 1990 that I used for about 5yrs straight. That thing was nothing special but it took great pics. I pretty much documented my high school life with that thing. I have HUNDREDS of pics from that era and looking at all those pics today gives my friends and I nostalgia. They made fun of me back in the day for taking so many pics yet today they want to see every single pic I have. So I have to scan them. None of them have that Hipstamatic look.

I bought my first digital Nikon in 2001. I remember I didn't like it. 2005 got a Canon SLR and it wasn't bad but I missed the Leica my dad used so I sold the SLR and found a guy last year locally that bought one and I guess his wife found out and said if he didn't get his money back she'd divorce him (I'm serious here). Yes it is an extremely expensive camera and at first the guy wanted close to retail. No way. 4 weeks later he called me and came down significantly. So I countered his offer a few times and bought it off him and he didn't even sign up for the warranty yet so it was a good deal for me. But poor guy I did rip him off but hey...

Anyway I think these apps are really cool and showing them to my father he says it brings him back to his childhood when his father was taking pics with his Leica back in the 50s. Interesting...
