I'm not sure what disappoints me more... not having the Canadian iTMS up by now, or wasting the whole bloody day waiting for it and reading 500 posts!!

can someone explain to me why anyone in the world can't simply access and buy from apple US iTMS? After all anyone anywhere in the world CAN buy CDs from amazon.com. What's the difference?

What I am dreading is that the canadian iTMS might be chok full of 'cancon' (i.e. canadian content) and that we might NOT have access to some of the stuff on the US iTMS. that would be SO sucky that I might have to find a friend in the USA and set up a proxy server; AND get a credit card with a US address.

I thought the internet was supposed to break down these geographic borders

Well, there certainly have been some changes going on over the last hour or so. I checked the UK store an hour or so ago, and the 'free single' was listed as costing 79p, and now it's been fixed and it's downloadable for free. Also, they added a graphic on the front page for the Band Aid 20 single, which didn't go anywhere a few hours ago - it said that it wouldn't be available until Dec 1st - but now it goes to the single (and it's been Dec 1st in the UK since 4pm PDT, way before I looked the first time!).

Points to Apple for resolving the argument with Band Aid 20, though. As it's a charity single, the record company wanted it up for £1.49 like the other online music stores. Apple refused, not wanting to set a precedent for allowing singles to be priced differently (and rightly so, seeing as the record companies have been pushing for this for 'premium' singles). Apple's solution? Sell the single on the store for 79p, and pay the other 70p themselves. Hurrah!

Neil.

Wait what are you talking about? That menu has always been there and has always only been on the main page, and it still is there...

What country are you browsing? I don't even know which country's store I am browsing anymore : there is no localized icon that I can see on any Genre page anymore... This is the same layout I see on each and every page of whatever country I am stuck in right now:

I'm sorry but this thread needs 500 messages. That and I'm bored from reading the iChat session.

edit: Ok...so it also needs 503.

Looks like it's going to hit 1000 before store comes online.
But it doesn't look it will be in November. In 15 min it will be December for over 70% of Canada's population.

Yes!!!! 500th Post!!! (well, my third post in the course of my incongruent, short-handed MacRumors life) but you catch my wind, eh?

Where is iTMS Canada????!!!!

And to think that I got up extra early this morning to see if the store was up and running!!! Jeez, ain't that a kick in the teeth?!!!

EDIT: 509th Post! You are guys are quick!

Licensing agreements. As part of the agreement to license to Apple, the labels have stipulated geographic limitations.

It allows them to control who can get what at what cost. Similar to region-coding DVD's. Now, the labels are free to try and renegotiate the deal every time Apple tries to move into a new country, and leads to delays like the UK indie launch, Ireland, and presumably Canada.

Because rights to music are owned locally and only for that country, reason being local pricing and copyrights. Sony of USA can not sell songs or CDs to Canada because same song is owned by Sony of Canada in Canada.
I am not sure that even Amazon will ship some CDs to other countries.

amazon.com will ship any book and any cd to canada... (typically faster and cheaper than sucky amazon.ca as a matter of fact!)
