i'm soo excited for the canadian iphone!!!! can't wait to get one, but i'm a little wary about the data plans & the contracts we'll have to sign with rogers. i've already got a great plan and i don't want a data plan!!

does anyone know if we'll be able to use the GPS on the iphone without needing a data plan?? that'd be awesome. :0

There is no Pay as You Go in Canada

No...you need the data to download maps which shows the GPS information

1)That being said Tom Tom has commented that they have a working version of their software so wouldnt the iPhones GPS be able to run with the istalled version of Tom Tom and not need to download anything hence no more data charges.
2) Even though it has been asked a couple of times no one seems to have answered the question. Is Rogers able to 'force us' to buy a data plan. I am very happy with wifi only and dont want data. I would think that if Rogers is offering a phone that no one else sells and force you to buy a data plan that would be 'tied selling' and in Canada that is very illegal. Any lawyers out there with a thought on this one?
Thanks

To try to answer the questions about data plans, I would think that they are able to force you into a data plan but there could be ways around it. It depends on how it pans out. ATT had iPhone plans you have to sign-up for. If they are forcing the activations in store then you're going to have to pick one of them and sign-up for it, I would think.
If you're able to take the phone home without activating then once you can jailbreak them then you don't have to worry about activating, just jailbreak and put in your existing SIM with your existing plan.
Of course, if you're doing that, why not just buy an unlocked version 1 of the iPhone? If you're not using the data then the 3G is useless, similarly, without data the GPS is probably going to be useless. The two versions are very similar aesthetically and in shape. You'll still be able to get the 2.0 firmware as well

Good News for Data

BELL has a new Unlimitted Data plan for its BB and WM only $30 dollars

Thus..rogers will have to do $30 dollars or less

Where did you hear this from? I'd just like to see a source, it would make it that much more believable lol.

Really, so by owning do you mean charging you for a service you don't have? Or charging you for long distance when it isn't? Or having pathetic customer support? Or having overpriced data plans? Or lying to you over the phone? Yeah, Rogers really owns .

Or by '"owns" they mean legally.... As in they purchased Fido years ago when Fido was about to go under.

So, for a data plan, does it include calling minutes too?

Sorry, I'm an actual n00b when it comes to these "data" plans. :p

Again, keeping in mind that reps are usually wrong. It's my impression that even if you have a contract you can just re-sign when you buy a new phone... it doesn't add together (like if you have 2 years left and the iphone is a 3 year you won't have a 5 year agree) but instead if just starts a new 3 year period from your sign date.

If things still are anywhere close to the way they used to be... you wouldn't get the $299 price...

The way it worked when I managed a store a few years ago...

You walk in and want to buy a phone... Without a contract you can get it for full price... (lets say $1000)...

The longer the contract you sign... the cheaper they give you the phone for...

So the way it works is if you sign for 3 years you get $700 off the price of your phone ($299).

You could then upgrade at any point in time, but you don't the full discount on the phone... The longer you have been in your contract the more money they will give you off of your upgraded phone.

(I've been on the CPU working too much today... not sure if that made sense)

For me, who just went to the Rogers store last week and saw that they were selling 10mb for like over $50, I find this hard to believe. If true, I'm going to the Rogers store and getting a data plan because usually they'll try to beat the competitors price - especially when you threaten to end your contract with them. :p

EDIT* Turns out this guy speaks the truth. Bell also has a $7 unlimited data plan for HTC Touch...

So when I go to Rogers(existing customer) and buy the iPhone will it a bea 2 year contract or 3 year?

That would be your choice.... the longer you sign with them the cheaper the phone is..

So... Like $299 if you sign for 3 years... $549 if you sign for 2 years.

(i just made that number up... just for the example)

For most smart phones you generally have 2 plans that go together...

A "data" plan is the part of the plan that covers all the network data usage..

a "voice" plan covers all of your calling.

You would generally be able to mix and match these... but we will have to wait and see for the official word.

There is one fixed price for the iPhone. The price won't flucuate because it will either be a 3 year or 2 year contract that they offer. I'm asking which one they'll be offering. ATT is doing a 2 year.

I believe the iphone uses Google Maps with the GPS... so while you wouldn't pay anything for the GPS chip to get your location... you would need to pay for the data to download the map of your area... (the phone wouldn't store the maps for the world in it... they download on the fly)

hopefully that comes out soon and hopefully it's not expensive :0 imagine it costing more than the iphone?? lol
