I know nobody knows yet, but I also hope that you can buy the phone without the contract. Like what would happen if I said my current phone broke and I need a new one, I would like an iPhone? They can't just turn you down can they. Say I just bought an iPhone + plan and had the device stolen, would they really say I need to add another 2 years to my plan?

You wouldn't be able to because there won't be an option to buy it outright. To get another you'd have to pay the amount to get out of your old contract and then pay for another $199 iphone with new data plan.

Currently I'm stuck on a family contract (easier, cheaper for what I need) which was signed back in November. So if I signed on July 11th 2008 my contract would end July 11th 2011?

You're right, I remember reading that too, it is 3 years.

You cannot actually renew back up to the 3 years unless at least 1 year has expired on your contract.

Rogers has a new press release for Fido, but still no price plans.
http://your.rogers.com/investorrelations/news_communications.asp

Interesting. There's actually two news releases about the iPhone on that news page.

One (dated June 9) says that Rogers will be bringing the iPhone to Canada on July 11th. The second (dated June 12) says that Fido will be bringing the iPhone to Canada on Julty 11th.

If you go to the Rogers Wireless webpage, you'll see a blatant iPhone teaser dressed up in a distinctive Rogers style of advertising. There's no such teaser on Fido's web page. I wonder if they may actually offer the iPhone for sale on *both* networks?

I know that Rogers and Fido are technically owned by the same company. But they've traditionally worked hard to keep a clear distinction between the branding of the two services.

So I went to two rogers wireless stores in Ottawa (Billings Bridge and The Glebe) yesterday and talked to the reps about the iPhone. Take it all with a grain of salt since we know how notoriously unreliable the information from rogers reps are, but anyway, here's what I got out of them:

-Both reps stated that pre-orders are not (and have not been) happening at their stores, although they did not deny the possibility of them happening elsewhere. This contradicts information from the HowardForums stating that Ottawa stores are taking pre-orders.

-The rep at the Glebe store stated that the phone will be available WITHOUT a contract, for a higher price. He did not comment on exactly how much higher the price would be.

-Both reps said there is no estimated timeline on the release of plan/pricing information, except the confirmation of the $199/$299 3yr contract price. Both reps also said their personal opinions were that this information would come later, rather than sooner.

-Both reps said there was no information on distinctions between consumer and corporate plans (I'm on a nice corporate plan so I expect slightly preferential treatment).

-The Glebe store had a door sized promo ad "Something Big Coming on July 11th"

And most interestingly:

-The rep at the Billings Bridge store said that they will be receiving limited quantities (as in not enough to meet demand), and most (if not all) would be reserved for NEW activations. He said that existing Rogers customers will be able to order them from the Rogers website and have them shipped from their central warehouse. He did not offer any information regarding activation, so this does not exclude the possibility of having to bring the unit into the store to be activated.

That's interesting. Yesterday I put myself on a waiting list at a downtown Toronto location. In addition to my personal info, they asked me what storage capacity I wanted and whether it would be a new activation or an upgrade. I told them it would be an upgrade. They gave me no indication that this was an issue. They said they would notify everyone on the list when the stock arrives at the store. I asked the obvious question, won't you have them on July 11? He said, that is the official launch date, but they can't guarantee they will actually have the units in their hands that day. Hence, the waiting list.

I'm still not sure whether or not it will still be necessary to line up. It would seem to me that there is only a point to having a waiting list if you intend to call the people and hold the unit until they get to the store. Otherwise, why bother with a list?

Bottom line for me is that I will NOT agree to a 3 year contract. We all know that in another year, Apple will release an upgraded device and I don't plan to be under contract when that happens. In addition, there is a possibility that I may be moving to the US in a year or so - don't want to be under a Canadian contract...

I will gladly pay $399 or $449 for an iPhone with no contract instead of $199 for a 3 year contract.

if this option is not available, I'll just purchase an iPod touch. I still have to carry a BB around for work reasons so not having a second phone line would actually save me money...

im in the same boat. ive been dragged along on my 3yr contract. its like signing your life away and i would much rather pay full price for an iphone to put it on a 2 year contract. im still having trouble getting rid of my htc mogual. i mean i giving them the phone for free if they tke over the contract and no one will fricking do it!!!!

If the price that was given for no contract 3G iPhones from Vodafone (or some euro carrier) is similar for Rogers (if they even offer the option) then you're dreaming with 399$ and 449$ prices, unfortunately. It was reported on engdaget and probably other sites that no contract iPhones woud be available for 499/€569 which is about $773/$881 (US prices).

It's officially on FIDO, for $199 / $299 with a three year contract, and will have an iPhone-specific data plan.

I find it interesting that it says the iPhone won't be available to buy without a service plan.

"The company has also noted that the iPhone will not be for sale on its own, without a service plan, from either carrier."

I am quite surprised that Ted didn't announce a industry leading 4 year contract with the iphone.

Remember the good old days of Clearnet, no commitment and per second billing.

Fido still has per second billing still. I wonder how that will affect any plans that come with the iPhone? Will the Fido iPhone plan have it and the Rogers iPhone plan not?

Well here's what I was thinking...they have to sell the phone without contract. What If someone who just signed up for a 3 year contract loses their phone or wrecks their phone ie water damage etc. Is this person not allowed to buy a new iphone lol. They have to buy another kind of phone. That would be ridiculous.

woo hoo. some one is gonna take it :D

well fido and rogers have always had somewhat different plans before but who knows when it comes to the iFone

Rogers... What a joke

I phoned Rogers to ask them about current data plans for 3G devices and was told "$15 for 2mb, $25 for 4, etc..." So then I mentioned that their Portable Internet service uses the same data on the same network with unlimited data for $50 a month. She agreed that it was the same data and network but said "too bad." Then she proceeded to mention the PC cards which get a few gigs a month for $65-$100 and that I would need one of those on my accounts first. So then I asked if I bought a 3G phone, and a PCcard modem, then cancelled the modem plan later, could I then get that data on my 3G phone and after she thought about it a few moments she said "Hmm, never thought about that, but I guess you could."
So of course I then had to ask what would happen if I got an unlocked 3G iPhone but she said they can detect (which I know they can) what kind of device you are using and would cancel the plan. But what a joke, all I have to do is at one time or another have USB modem on my account and can then get gigabytes per month on my 3G phone vs a few megabytes. I hate Canadian telecoms.

"current", theres going to be NEW data plans for the iPhone. and they wont be selling iPhones with out data plans.
if you call rogers 10 more times and ask the same question, you will probably get 11 different answers. rogers employes will tell you anything to make you happy, anything!

Can I talk to the same Rogers employee you did? All I got was a massive headache and two rude reps when I talked to them. I would suggest holding off on talking to anyone at Rogers regardless of their status. They don't seem to know anything about the iPhone at all. I'm amazed how poorly they are prepared for the launch. Everyone you talk to will tell you something different about the iPhone and Rogers doesn't seem to be in any hurry to clear anything up. I just want a straight answer but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen anytime soon. I'm thinking that the only way I'll be able to get the iPhone is by paying $400 to get out of my contract because they seem dead set on screwing over people who are already with them. I think the only way we're going to get some straight answers out of them is hitting up the e-mail address listed in the press release or contacting someone who actually does more than read off a script making illogical guesses for what they don't have info on.

Of course you have to buy another phone, you don't have to buy the iPhone though, unfortunately. The problem is that ultimately they don't have to sell the iphone without a contract. They still might though but I don't see a compelling reason that they HAVE to

So wait, let's say you buy a 5mb data plan from rogers. All it takes is to download one e-mail with a picture attachment and you're done for the month? lol (this post is not a joke)

So, I'm guessing my initial thoughts are correct? The only way to get the iPhone from either Rogers or Fido is to sign a 3 year contract? Meaning those of us who are not yet eligible for an upgrade either have to wait or pay the termination fee? Talking to Rogers the other day I was told regardless of your contract switching to Fido was free, I wonder if switching to Fido would allow me to sign a new contract?
