As someone who has had both, go with the plus. You'll get more battery life and superior camera.
RE: Camera - its the same wide angle lens, all youre getting in everyday use is an optical zoom right? The only time they work in sync is for the bokeh effect and that will be using an f2.8 (I think) lens without OIS in foreground so not very good in low light?

I am still on the fence on which on to get.

I have 6 plus and wife has the 6.

I like the feel in my hand with her 6 but love the screen size of the 6 plus. I get hand cramps once in a while maneuvering my fingers around the 6 plus screen

Question

Can I swap out our SIM cards in the 6 plus and 6 and try her phone for a day or is it not possible?

It depends on which carrier you are on. Which carrier? You may be able to swap sims

OK first post. Long time lurker..

Apologies if this has already been mentioned. The camera has always been no.1 priority for me and cant decide 7 or 7 plus but I hate overly big phones. Am I right in thinking if the telephoto lens is f2.3 and not OIS then the whole draw to the bokeh effect might not be so tempting? Its just that if the telephoto lens is doing the sharp in focus portrait then this will have worse low light capabilities (more noise etc) than the previous iPhone main camera? Being that most portraits will be taken indoors does that not kind of take the shine off this feature? Indoors you are gonna want to use the fast f1.8 lens surely?

Have ordered the 7 but intially felt like I was going to miss out on the bokeh effect (not bothered about optical zoom and less distortion will just move closer).

Whats everyones thoughts?

While I am not upgrading this year, if I were it would be for the 7 Plus. 7 Plus represent the larger upgrade between the two and it's not that much of an upgrade over the 6s to begin with. If the camera is your top priority, the 7Plus is the way to go as it has everything the 7 has and more.

I originally bought the 6 plus back in the days, then ended up swapping it for the 6. I loved the screen of the plus, however weight and the one hand usage really got annoying. At gym, i couldnt have the plus in my pockets, so i always left it out. And few times i left it behind. Was nice to surf on, but sucked when i was in bed, was really awkward to hold with one hand and surf. And from the specs, looks like the 7 plus is even heavier than the 6 plus.

Also plus wouldnt fit in my car's cup holder, so i had it tucked under my leg. One of the things i missed when switching was the battery life, however the 7 seems to have increased the battery life so that should be very helpful for days use. And finally the OIS, made big difference in my photos from plus to 6. However with OIS in 7, that should really help with my photos.

Hard decision, i think both are great phones. Really depends on what your daily activities are. For example, taking a train everyday and want to catch up on a show, maybe plus is better suited. You use your phone daily for gym and like to use arm bad, maybe the 7 will be the better choice.

I've had iPhone 6 sized phone since the 6. I love the thought of more screen real estate and the added features but I'm worried about carrying the phone in my front right pants pocket.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Does your iPhone 6+/6S+ do okay with pocket use? Would love some comments.

Thanks all,
M

For me the 6s plus is not a pocketable phone. It's fine for my purse. Right now, my day off and I have the SE in my pocket because I'm in and out of the garden. If the 7 is pocketable for me, I will sell my SE.

Pocketable is not a word, is it?

We are both on Verizon.

Verizon phones are supposed to be unlocked so I think you can switch. May need a quick call to Verizon to have them switch things on their end but that should be very simple for them. Should being the key word.

The Number One reason I exchanged my iPhone 6s Plus for a 6s was because carrying the Plus in the front pocket of my dress slacks (my daily work attire) felt like I was toting around an iPad in there. It looked ridiculous, and was just way too bulky to look professional.

The Number Two reason I went back to the smaller phone was that I can pretty much do anything I need to do with the iPhone 6s with one hand. That is IMPOSSIBLE to do with the Plus. I don't care how big your hands are...you have to use two hands to do most anything.

The Number Three reason is that the Plus is just too flipping long. Why Apple hasn't taken a page from it's prime adversary Samsung and trimmed the 1.5" bezels above and below the screen to make the phone smaller and more easily handled is beyond me. I love the thought of a 5" screen...but the Samsung Notes & Galaxy's prove that it can be done.

All that said...I'll be preordering a Mate Black iPhone 7.

I originally had the 6 and when I got that water damaged, I switched up to the 6+. From there it was hard to go back to a smaller screen and I very much enjoy the larger screen real estate. Makes it easier on the eyes too.

Same thing here - 6s+ to 6s to 7 - was especially bad with work pants that have larger pockets - sometimes it would turn sideways and look....awkward.

Same here, unfortunately. My work pants are on the tight side with small-ish pockets, so the 4.7 already looks a big awkward, not to mention the 5.5. Putting it inside the shirt's pocket would be another option, but the weight of it kinda pulls it down then...

I used both a 6S and a 6S plus today. Neither had cases. The 6S just felt so comfortable and natural while the plus required hand juggling. This isn't something that I didn't already know but I hadn't used them back to back like that in a while. The screens both looked great and the split pane apps on the plus were nice but really not necessary. The 7 camera will be plenty for my usage. And the 7 gets 2 hours additional battery over my 6S that I used to have. My decision is made. 7 and keep my iPad Mini 2. I can't wait for my reservation this Friday!

Good decision...if it weren't for the 7 plus camera I would of went with the 7. Love the feel in hand and one handed use of the 4.7".

oh forgot to add, my jeans and dress pants started getting worn out with the outline of the 6 plus in my front pocket. No longer an issue with the 6. Thats another reason i am getting the 7

There is rumor that normal 7 has a bigger sensor than 7 Plus, because of the dual lens system occupying more space. Hopefully not true, as I'd like to have the best possible camera for what is a super expensive device ($120 more than the regular 7).
I bought 7+ maily because of camera , if your info is correct Apple gets the + back.

I only worry about size in a gym. I carry iPhone in a holster on a belt and always Bluetooth

I've made my decision to cancel my 7 Plus 128GB and switch to the 7 256GB.

I have a iP6 and played with a 6S+ in store. The screen of the plus goes to the top of the iP7 body top, thats quite the stretch. My friend has an SE and I was playing with it last night and I really liked the smaller size.

The whole reason I'm choosing to upgrade is the $650 Verizon is offering for my 6 (plus its been annoyingly laggy since day 1), if I had to sell my 6 for street value ($425) I wouldn't upgrade.

If Apple announced a 7, 7 Plus and 7 SE, I'd likely take the smallest one. After I realized that, I switched to the 7 256GB.

^ why go from 128 to 256? Just to make it the same price?

Personally I've managed on 32gb fine, though I've had to clean house a few times. Imagine 128 is going to be more than I'll need.

Kind of wished I had ordered 128 for my wife. It at 32gb I think she'll be fine also.

I guess we all use phones differently though.

I have 70GB free on my current 128GB and haven't gotten around to loading music. With 4K video, plus music, I need space.

I have a 16GB Air 2 LTE (I got it at Best Buy on a special deal for like $400 with the next memory size up being $250 more) and I have memory problems. The extra $100 is worth it to never have to deal with that.

Ha! I was hoping no one would follow up. I STILL DON'T KNOW! Everyone in the thread brought up great points. Camera and battery life are not of great importance to me.

Bigscotal's comments speak to me, specifically "nuisance size-wise". That's what I can't get past.

I think I'm going to stick with standard 7.

That's my problem too. The apple rep said I can always return it if I don't like the plus with in 30 days that's why I ordered the 7+.

While it IS an upgrade to the camera for now all it does is add a 2x zoom which a neat feature but one I'll seldom use. The other feature the 2nd camera adds is live view post process Bokeh in portrait mode, mind you it's not real Bokeh though. It mathematically decides what is background and what is foreground based on a stereoscopic image and then it blurs the background like you would in photoshop. Now I'm not saying it's a terrible thing but as far as innovation I'm not too impressed. Were it for video I'd jump on it in a heartbeat! But I bet that comes in next year's model. The other feature I wish it would have allowed is post process Bokeh after snapping. It would work like those Lytro cameras where you can decide how much blur and where your focal point is... maybe in an iOS upgrade, but as advertised the camera isn't that impressive IMO.

Learned some new things about the plus in this review. Apparently the telephoto lens does not have OIS. he's smaller iPhone guy so if anyone is looking to get a perspective then here you go.

http://daringfireball.net/2016/09/the_iphones_7

Tech Crunch and also DaringFireball both note that even when taking normal photos the tele camera is also used? Does that help it take better pics?

https://techcrunch.com/2016/09/13/review-apple-tees-up-the-future-with-iphone-7/

Every time you take a picture with the iPhone 7, both the wide angle and telephoto fire off. Yes, two 12 megapixel pictures for every shot. This could be a prime driver behind the increase of the iPhone 7 Plus’ memory to 3GB.

Both images are needed due to an Apple technique it is calling “fusion” internally. Fusion takes data from both sensors and merges them into the best possible picture for every condition. If, for instance, there is a low-light scene that has some dark areas, the image-processing chip could choose to pick up some image data (pixels or other stuff like luminance) from the brighter f1.8 wide angle and mix it in with the data from the f2.8 telephoto, creating a composite image on the fly without any input from the user. This fusion technique is available to every shot coming from the camera, which means that the iPhone 7 Plus is mixing and matching data every time that trigger is tapped.

This technique is made possible because the optics, coatings, sensors, perspectives and color balances of the two cameras are perfectly matched.

The fusion technique also comes in handy when using the new zoom functions of the iPhone 7 Plus.

From DaringFireball:

Stills shot from 1x up until 2x use the wide angle lens, with assistance from the telephoto lens via software. Images shot from 2x to 10x (the maximum) use the telephoto lens. The iOS Camera app defaults to 1x zoom whenever you launch it. It just takes a single tap on the “1x” button to jump to 2x zoom — which is really jumping from one camera to the other.
