Carplay2air is an embarrassment. I sent them a long email regarding their product and it's inability to work in a GM product that they advertise it will work in and this is their reply.

Hi Carl,

Normally, it's being fixed with a firmware update.

You may try to reset your media system, basically by uninstalling and reinstalling it making sure it's on the latest update also.

If it still doesn't work, please follow the return process below so we can refund your money.

Very important details to put on your return:
1. Do not forget to put your name as this is very important to identify and process your return.
2. Kindly inform us in this email and attach the receipt and the tracking number. We will then submit a report to the warehouse team so they can start monitoring your return.

The return address is below:

Alex
JinRong Dasha
Huicheng District
Huizhou City
GuangDong Province
China
Postal: 516000
Phone: +8618379715520

Furthermore, the shipping fee cost is non-refundable.

"So i get to pay shipping for a product that they advertise it will work in."

I also got a Car2Playair for my RAV4 and its crap. It reboots 3-4 times when I usually start the car up, and anytime I switch apps, it reboots again. Customer Service is garbage and they want me to pay fore return shipping.

I'll be doing a chargeback on them.

Is there a better solution for wireless CarPlay that actually works?

There is an update posted today for direct download, but it appears to be incomplete @ 4.7mb instead of the usual 7mb. Will not install on either usb-a or usb devices.

I got this from CPlay2Air today, regarding the five-minute audio bug:

Hi BUXjr,

I've also sent a notice about this issue to our engineering team and they said to give it another week or two.

I will also send you an update as soon as I hear back from them,

Thanks!

...I'm sure it is just SOP for these emails to keep us on the hook for a future firmware, that may or may not ever come. But if enough of us are experiencing the five-minute audio glitch, they will have to do SOMETHING about it. If it's happening in mostly all GM products, and now we're hearing about Audi as well; this is a systemic issue.

Fingers crossed we get a 4th of July surprise!!!

Got a response from Carlinkit: If you have the blue led light, the updates via USB stick won't be working anymore.

Do you have other experiences with the blue light?

I got my USB-C adapter yesterday from aliexpress with firmware 2020.6.17. I have the same on my USB-A. Works fine on my Renault ZOE 2020 and Golf7 fl 2017. Waiting for my Volvo XC-40 T5 TE 2021 in October. Should work also with sensus as owner report.

I have the sound distortion issue on my Audi Q5 ever since I updated to 17.06. Before that I was on the March firmware (can’t remember which exactly, sorry) and everything worked fine except Siri cutting off eg. ”Playing all songs, shuf—“. Was hoping the 17.06 fixed this (it didn’t).

Same with my Audi Q7. I get sound distortion now and then with the latest version, but most of the time it works fine.

Works perfect with Sensus in XC40 and XC60. I have the T4 MY2020 XC40.

Indeed it does. I wouldnt go back to wired carplay now even though i still get the occasional connection error which is easily sorted by pulling the usb and re-inserting.

I also have the 5 minutes problem in my 2016 Silverado with the Cplay2air VER:2020.01.22.2233. In my case it's actually 6 minutes on the dot. I have not contacted them because I figured it's useless. I also have other issues with it. After half an hour or so, maps or whatever application is open starts to get pixelated and the sounds/music starts to stutter and cut off (different from static and sound degradation).

I also had to use a delay timer (10 seconds delay) with the dongole to keep it from starting up before the headunit is fully booted up. That took care of the intermittent connection of having to some times manually unplug and re-plug when I get into my vehicle.

It is incredibly annoying that with all these complaints updates are very scarce and far in between, 6 months in my case. But then again, I'm not expecting much from them. I cannot however recommend this device to anyone. This thing is a prototype in its best day.

CarPlay2Air failed abysmally in my 2019 Miata RF, after I was assured it would work. They were of no help making it work, and they made a return difficult and expensive. Stay away from them.
Thanks for the feedback. Although they replied to me and advised me it’s working with Mazda, I returned my adapter based on the forum feedback. I’ll wait for a better solution (if any)...

I’m happy the 10 second rely was able to help you with your GM. 👍 regarding being on 1-22-20 firmware. You might be able to manually usb update to 3-6-20 that will fix the 5-6 minute sound issue.

I think the only realistic hope is a portless iPhone coming out next year that requires a first party USB adapter from Apple to work with existing CarPlay units.

If a portless iPhone came out, even Apple wouldn’t be able to justify killing CarPlay for millions of users. There would have to be a solution, and hopefully it would be a USB dongle over some magnetic smart connector.

Thanks for the tip. Any idea where to find that 3-6-20 firmware?

I wasn't aware that the timer idea was used before, I thought it was original to me :(.

3/6/20 firmware has been posted on here a few times with download link. I don’t remember the page. Yes I’ve been posting a how to for the 10 second delay relay mod for a few months now. I guess electrical engineers think alike. 👍

You are an engineer, I am just a hack :).

I noticed that when I open the Silverado door that sends power to the USB ports, so I had to get the power to the timer from the cig lighter in the center console that only receives power when key is at accessory.

Thanks for the firmware tip, I will be skimming through the thread to find the download info.

Attached is a Zip file of 3-6-20 just unzip it first. Use a usb stick and format it to fat 32. Only put the un-zipped file 3-6-20 firmware in the usb stick nothing else in that usb stick. remove the CarPlay2air from the truck. Plug usb stick to the CarPlay2air dongle then connect the CarPlay2air dongle to the iPhone wall charger not the truck. Let it do the update. 2 minutes or so. Then disconnect it from the wall charger, remove the usb stick and last connect the CarPlay2air dongle to the truck to test it and confirm its on 3-6-20.

Did rolling back your update also fix your intermittent connection issues? Or is a USB power delay still required?

The firmware update from 1-22-20 to 3-6-20 fixed the 5-6 minute sound shutter/cracking. The USB power 10 second delay relay mod is still needed for GM cars/trucks this allows the head unit to boot up before the CarPlay2air/Carlinkit dongle turns on.

This mod eliminates the need to pull the dongle and plug it back in manually almost every time the auto is started. It does it all automatically when the ignition is turned on.

I’ll be posting a couple usb/10 sec delay kits put together and ready to install for sale on eBay if anyone wants one.

With my CPlay2Air Adapter I can find via OTA only the January software. Do you know when they will have a update?
