So I guess I’ve successfully killed my cplay2air:/ OTA update showed up so I went through the process - 100% in Safari, reboot then waited about 10 minutes but the device seems to be dead. No light flashing, nothing. Tried plugging into 2A wall charger and doing USB flash but no lights after plugging in the charger.

Anyone with the same problem? Had the device for about a week and now it’s dead.

Yep, did the same thing, but I didn't wait a week. I bricked it 2-3 days into it for no good reason other than I could not leave well enough alone.

If you plug in a CarLinkIt v1 into car and get no lights at all what does that mean? Bricked?

Flashed with USB 2020-07-18 update file, got the flashing blue and red, then a solid red, waited a bit and unplugged. Tried in car and no light or working at all.

Have to add it’s never worked in my car, I just live in hope 1 updates does, but I’ve always had at least a red light on when in car.

From memory, when I bricked mine, I got a slow flashing dim blue light when plugged into the car or a charger.
My bricked unit, shows NO lights at all. However, when I plug it into a power adapter in the house, I get a split second flash (a blip, really) of blue the second power is connected. Then, nothing at all.

Damn, glad I sat on the bench for the last firmware update. Sounds like they royally screwed-up this one. The whole team of early adopters are down and out.

Today I updated my adapter first to version 16.06. via usb and then directly to the latest version via OTA... worked great

Hello! I've been reading this forum for a while but never had the need to post so I joined today.

Wanted to let people know that at least in my experience, once you update to 7/17 firmware, the device does not show any lights when plugged into a USB adapter. It only shows lights when plugged into a CarPlay USB from the vehicle.

After plugging into the vehicle and seeing the red light (I have CarPlay2Air with USB A), plug in the thumb drive and the screen will show the firmware update process/status. This procedure was also confirmed by an email to carlinkit support.

Hope this helps someone. Thank you all for the information! This thread has been super helpful!

*edit - FYI, I was able to roll back to an earlier firmware. I went from 7/17 to 3/6 (I have GM) but got stuck on the activation process. After emailing carlinkit support, the user/password didn't work so I had to go back to 7/17. I'm guessing there's a way to downgrade the firmware but it's more complicated than I can figure out.

I wish I had seen this thread a bit earlier--I tried to do an OTA upgrade earlier on my CarPlay2Air and it seems to be bricked. No lights whatsoever. Update was stuck at 90% for a while, then 100% "Upgrade Successful," but device never came back on. I tried the USB flashing process to no avail (I assume this has no chance of working if the device isn't even reaching the point of turning on an LED). Really frustrating that it worked more or less fine out of the box but I felt compelled to update.

I didn't catch which firmware it was trying to update to and can't go back, but I assume it was the 7-17.

Updated to 7-17. Thing still doesn’t work very well with my CR-V. Think I’m gonna sell it and hope for an Apple solution when the iPhone goes portless.

I bet if they made one they’d put a GPS in it and charge something like $199.

Sorry for your loss. At this point with so many bricked devices I think you ALL should let Cplay2air know about this issue as a group. They also need to know about this thread.

Thought mine was bricked but left it plugged into car and lights came on.

I did USB with the 2020-07-17. However even though it seen the BT, and then a WiFi, it’s doing the sand thing on my car as has done since got it in Sep ‘19. It seems to keep disconnecting from the WiFi. CarPlay icon flashed on car screen but disappears.

I even this time seen the CarPlay icon on my iPhone. However the lights on the CarLinkIt v1 just keep going red to blue flashing etc. I also connected to the website, sort of proves the WiFi was dropping as I kept refreshing and sometimes connected, someone showed no page. Strange. It showed was up to date when connected and tried to update with 2020-07-17.1459

I wonder if the dongle WiFi is broke though. Or I can chance and get my car system updated at a £100+ cost to see if makes a difference.

Someone on here has same car as me, but only posted a few times and never been back. I’ve messaged but nothing.

My quest goes on.,,,,

If you don't know anyone else with a different CarPlay-capable vehicle, maybe go to a car dealership and do a "test drive"? I guess you should make sure to try on a car that people reported as compatible. At least that would rule out a bad adapter.

I you have a device that appears bricked return it to Amazon or Ebay while you can. Amazon has their AZ guarantee as well.

I tried to update my Carlinkit v2 this morning at 7AM EST or so to the OTA version while connected to my car - at around 90% of the upgrade, the Mazda Connect system reported CarPlay was having issues, and proceeded to reboot (I am not sure if power was cut off at this point to the USB port). The Carlinkit showed no lights, although the upgrade did show 100% completed after a while. After that, I've not been able to get any lights or activity out of the unit, connected to my system or to an USB power brick. I believe my adventure with this system is over.

Seems they are having a fire 3 hour left sale of the USB-C's trying to unload them. $102 bucks, pretty cheap until you brick it using their own update methods. USB-A's are going for $139, go figure.

Get it tomorrow and Prime so you can return it.

Little bit strange. A new OTA update from 2020.7.1. Resolve problem of upgrade failure"}
Yesterday I updated my Carplay2air adapter first via USB to 06.16. (@bustedtheory, page 126) and then via OTA to 07.17.

Today I also updated my Carlinkitv2 as described above. Both adapter updates installed without problems.
Also today 07.17. is installed via OTA.

Thanks! I jumped on this while waiting for CPlay2Air to get back to me. I figure even if they do get back to me with a replacement, I’ll just have a spare one, which given this OTA bricking experience seems generally advisable...
