A few notes based on my first ~10 days of using the CPLAY2air dongle in my 2017 Subaru Impreza (with the 2020.12.10.1057 firmware downloaded from here):

* Short dropouts are an issue. They're inconsistent: some trips have had few if any dropouts, but most have a smattering though it's short and not a *huge* deal. And some trips have had dropouts frequent enough that it's quite annoying (and would be embarrassing if I had a passenger). The inconsistency makes me wonder if it's poor wifi signal, which could be variable based on any number of variables. The dongle sits in the center arm rest console, and my phone is in my pocket on the other side of my body, so that may be blocking the signal enough to impact it. Perhaps the carlinkit models that have powered wifi antennas (mentioned by some in this forum) would be more reliable? Or if I have the dongle hang out of the center console? (I did a little experimenting, without clear results.)

* Battery usage seems reasonable to me. I've had a couple of trips with 1.5–2 hrs driving, and power draw on the phone was noticeable but entirely usable in my opinion. (I still ended the day with I think 50+% battery left, on a new iPhone 12 Pro [not the big Max model].) If I were taking a long trip I would plug in my phone while driving, but shorter trips and normal commutes wouldn't warrant plugging in IMO.

* "Hey Siri" seems somewhat inconsistent; I suspect it's picking it up from the phone in my pocket rather than constantly listening to the car's microphone. Tapping the phone talk button on the steering wheel and then talking to siri works well.

* The car's audio controls for play/pause/next track/previous track are quite sluggish.

* As noted in my original post, it usually takes around 45 seconds from turning on the car to CarPlay being active on the screen, which is slower than I'd like. Most of the time it doesn't automatically start playing audio when it connects to CarPlay, but sometimes it does. (Personally I wish it never did — I hate autoplay.) At least it doesn't start playing the radio while waiting for the dongle to boot and connect.

Success with my 2017 Subaru Impreza, with the base head unit and the 2020.12.10.1057 firmware!

CarPlay2air asked me to review their unit. Here is my review “I received an email from CarPlay2air stating they were now compatible with my Subaru. I ordered a CarPlay2air and there was no response at all in my car. I sent 4 emails requesting service help, including all the detail. 4 days later they responded asking me for the detail they already had. In the mean time I found https://forums.macrumors.com/thread....2193978/page-204?post=29460696#post-29460696. That answered all my questions. I was able to flash the CarPlay2air with a software version not yet available on the official website. The device now works correctly, no thanks to the company. Unless you know how to format a flash drive and download new firmware to that flash drive, this device isn’t for you, because you will not get support from the company.”
Was it posted on their site? I wrote a negative review that was never posted. Only fawning reviews were there. Huge red flag.

CarPlay2Air is terrible. Their customer support stinks. Their website pretends to be a USA company with 24/7 support and a US address and phone. The address is a mail drop. The phone is not in service. If you buy off their website, you would never know that any returns have to be mailed back to China, at your expense. Much better to deal with Carlinkit - the company that actually makes the dongle that both use, and that actually makes some effort to provide support.

I just verified my negative review was not displayed on their site, as I expected. Only short very positive reviews are shown. Knowing what I do now I definitely would not purchase from CarPaly2air. Buyer beware

My friend use cplay2air which works fine in his Volvo XC60 but doesn't work on my Mercedes GLC200. So I bought another wireless carplay adapter from a niche brand ViseeO, called Play2air. The unit is a lot smaller than the cplay2air and much better looking. Although a lot more expansive but it does work well with my Mercedes and looks a lot more premium feel.

Looks cool, a video of real world connection speed from start rather than their promo would be nice to see.

$349 is a fair uplift though.

The first time setup will take a few minutes but after that the auto reconnection is pretty fast every time you re-enter your car.

The OTA update looks totally diferent from what we have so this could very well be a different product instead of a rebranded "carlinkit" like the rest of the dongles. But it could just be the next iteration of Carlinkit software (we've seen it before with diferently designed interfaces). Time will tell.

But ouch at the 349$ price tag 😱 Knowing that you can get the Carlinkit for 70-80$, unless this new one magically works on every car where Carlinkit does not, it's to much in my opinion.

I have Kodiaq 2020 MIB 2.5. The device works only 1st time after updating the flash. Next time no bluetooth/wifi nets. Need to update flash again and so on. I did a lot of attempts, finally sent it back. I have not tried 2020.12.10 flash.
As I understand @MaddenMan has the same problem on VW with MIB 2.5.

There are similar devices JoyeAuto WJUC-0 and WJUC-1. But I can not find any information about them from real users.
WJUC-0 = Carlinkit 2.0 with different housing and the option to connect the box directly into the usb-port without the short cable. The firmwares are interchangeable, however Joyeauto update releases are slower because they change the UI of the connecting screen a little bit. And the update file size is increased (ca. 1mb) which can lead to problems on CPlay2Air devices due to the small rootFS like VLud mentioned.

Just ordered one of these: https://www.carplaymmb.com/products/mmb-wireless-apple-carplay-dongle-plus?ref=j4lnq6ddnovi

Much better looking menus than the Carlinkit and also offers screen mirroring... will let you know how it works.
This could be WJUC-1 (1GB Ram, 8GB Flash). I think it's just another distribution channel of Joyeauto, because the youtube videos about the product are very similiar. My real user experience will also follow in approx. 2-3 weeks (WJUC-1).

Finally, if you double the price again, there seems to be a third variant of wireless carplay devices (4GB Ram and 32 GB Flash) which should give you the output of a full android 9.0 device with android appstore instead. This device will use the headunit only as a monitor. Maybe interesting for android phone users with a carplay compatible headunit. I don't know.

Update for 2016 Cadillac ATS: I bought a Carlinkit back in summer 20 (seems a lifetime ago). Had a bunch of issues with it. Worked a few times, but overall wouldn't connect. Went through some firmware updates both OTA and via USB plugin. Eventually the unit got wedged and wouldn't work at all, wouldn't take a firmware update regardless of method. I worked with Carlinkit over WhatsApp and finally decided to return the unit to Amazon.

After the return I've been watching this thread to see what progress had been made in reliability with certain cars. There aren't many ATSs on this thread, so in December I pinged Carlinkit over WhatsApp again to ask about compatibility. They claimed that compatibility was there, but not always... (kind of alarming). I had Amazon credit earmarked for another unit, so I pulled the trigger on ordering another from the Amazon link they provided, and heck, even saved $15.

Unit came within a couple days, plugged it in and, low and behold, it worked. I've driven a bunch around town and took at least two hour long or more trips and has worked fine. It's not 100% flawless, as in it doesn't connect right out of the gate all the time, but I've found that all I have to do is hit the "Projection" button in the CUE system which seems to ping the Carlinkit and eventually connect to the phone. Sometimes the connections is really fast, and sometimes it has to be prodded. But, even with prodding, it's better to have to hit "Projection" rather than wrangle my phone out and connect it to a visible and dangly lightning cable sticking out of the dash console. Also, every once in a blue moon it will output static for a second, but does seem to recover.

Firmware version that came on the unit is: 2020.11.10.2137

Combine that it works with the GM wireless charging (I have already updated the crappy GM Qi wireless charger with their updated retro fit kit with better Qi compatibility), I don't have a need for a cable anymore.

So, big win, AFAIC.

At least you guys are getting somewhere. I purchased the CPlay2Air for my Acura and it doesn’t work and they’ve seemed to have given up. I might just hang on to it hoping it happens at some point instead of dealing with shipping it back to China. Sucks!

This is the situation I sometimes have on my Vauxhall. Sometimes works and connects fine, other times the projection icon status on that, doesn’t show CarPlay icon. I prod the projection icon and CarPlay opens within a couple of seconds. Strange but as you say works, and I waited over a year to get anywhere! Same firmware as well, original CarLinkIt dongle.

I am kinda new with Cplay2air. Ordered in December. The firmware that was installed there didnt work. It connected only the first time. I had to delete everything, downgrade and update again the unit. The 2020.12.10.1057 update worked for me. It takes around 40 seconds to connect but it works.

The issue I have is that I cant make phone calls. I can hear the person but they cant hear me. Its like I am muted.
Another issue I have is that I cant be connect to my car unit via bluetooth. When the car is connecet to my phone via bluetooh the C2A unit wont connect. I can disable the BT in my car, but the phonecalls wont work.

Are you able to make phone with cplay2air unit? Any tips how to make this work?

Looks live some BOVEE DNA in there.

this is because Bovee product is actually manufactured by Viseeo (it’s in the Amazon description).

But is Viseeo Play2air using the same code base from Carlinkit.. to be confirmed.
Same as of for the Wifi spec.

it should be great if we could see how it performs comparing to carlinkit V2. As for that price you can have 5-6 carlinkit V2, we need good arguments to buy one.

In this video the guy says he can use wireless carplay on android head unit without any dongle. I don't have a android head unit but it seems awesome

In the "Settings" -> General -> CarPlay -> [CarPlay device name] app there was a setting to "Allow CarPlay when locked". For a wired device, this setting occurs but not when connected via CPLAY2air / CarlinKit. Why?

Which Subaru do you have?
I have a 2019 Subaru Outback with the Harmon Kardon with the multimedia CarPlay head unit I would love to use this with.

I have a 2018 Impreza with the Harmon Kardon head unit. The 2020.12.10.1057 firmware works well in my CarPlay2air.

My Dp: I installed official 12/10 firmware at first. My car is accord 2019. In my first drive, I had a black display every 10 minutes, then one reboot in 20 minutes. I'm not using navi app. In my second drive, no black out nor reboot in one hour drive. Navi app is running. But sometimes a break in the music. Let me try my new cable with custom firmware and see how it works.
I have a 2019 accord. The 8/04 was the first to work and it worked fine. 11/10 I got the black screen and occasional reboot. 12/10 has been steady with a fast boot up.

Same car as yours.

Now I'm using custom 12/10. I flashed the old firmware back then installed new firmware (like reflash). Then I removed waze from my carplay and it works fine. So far I only got one reboot. Google map & music works fine.

It's funny you say that, I switched from Waze to Google maps when I was still on 11/4 and it still rebooted. I'm having no issues with Ludwigs 12/4. will probably not update again unless something big is developed. If you're using an Iphone, you can setup a shortcut (using the shortcut app) and have the 3 apps you want open every time your phone connects to carplay.

Nice tip. Thanks.

I tried waze on 8/04, 11/4 and 12/4 firmwares, they are all crashed or rebooted.
