Many thanks to all the contributions on here as I have finally managed to get my CarPlay2Air dongle working in my MX-5 without it rebooting every 30 seconds. I used the USB stick method of updating the firmware to 2021-02-02 after downloading it to an ancient 2GB stick formatted on my MacBook, it worked fine even with a couple of hidden files on the stick.

The hidden files should not have any issue with the upgrade. I have done upgrade to Mazda and now the dongle with the Mac formatted Fat32 drive.

when I update the cplay2air by usb I plug the cplay2air on the charger and wait 2 minutes. So I plug the pendrive on the cplay2air and it works. If I do not wait it does not work.

This does not seem like a reliable solution if the IPhone goes portless

It’s not an official product, it’s a hack at best that seems to work for a lot.

If iPhone went portless I’m sure Apple would have a product that would work.

Problem is with so many different car models and headunits it will impossible to have something that does have tons of issues.

Your basing that on what we have now though. The current dongles are a hack to jump on BT/WiFi. Apple have full control of their hardware and software and so I’d imagine they’d find a way.

Wired CarPlay works fine when installed on cars, so I would presume they would have an official way to make their dongle work.

UI,Something that cannot update via USB

@zthepeetz Interesting... looks completely different than mine... how did you get yours (left) to not look like the default UI (right)?

UI is part of the firmware. Interesting that it’s changed. Could be a similar issue to the JoyeAuto firmware problem? Maybe it’s looking for a different filename (something other than u2w_update.img)?

So you both have the same 2020.12.25.1731 firmware with that ui? You might have a special build that hasn’t been publicly released… the last public dec build was 2020.12.10.1057….then it went to Jan 2021.

I prefer your ui than the one I have… so hopefully this is a preview of things to come… seems like that firmware was installed on accident… Have you tried reporting it via the built in webpage report form? Apparently that goes to the developers…

I have, but not sure I worded it properly, might have another go and include the firmware version.

@whatgift -- so the UI is part of the hardware not the software image? that's a bummer. How long ago did you get your device? Do you have the same one as @zthepeetz
I don’t think it’s because the hardware is different, but that’s what I was thinking because it seems more than coincidence that our different UI seems to be having update issues.

I purchased it about 3 weeks ago.
