What's the general feeling with these wireless dongles? Carlinkit preferred? People buy through aliexpress?

There’s 245 pages to this thread. That alone says buy/use at your own risk. I don’t remember anyone mentioning any success with Audi but I haven’t looked out for that myself.
I got the Carlinkit off Amazon for my parents' 2018 Audi Q5 and it works perfectly, for what it's worth, as it does in my 2019 VW GTI. I feel like the tendency is for those to speak up loudest for whom it's a problem and those whose are working fine to go about their business, so you get a lopsided view from threads like these. I keep track of the goings on here with regards to firmware upgrades and new features, but for me the thing has worked flawlessly for the last 5+ months. Given I was considering dropping $1,000+ on retrofitting a MIB3 head unit from the 2021 VWs into my car for wireless CarPlay, $130 for this dongle was a no-brainer. Two thumbs up from me, at least in my Volkswagen + Audi experience.
I'd go with one of the $30 Amazon off brand ones just for their return policy alone and it's the same dang thing, no dealing with Chinese shipping rates if you need to ship it back too.

He's talking about the ~$30 unbranded knockoffs of the Carlinkit. Doesn't appear to be any on Amazon at the moment.

The length of this thread is partly because many sub-topics have been mixed together. The problems introduced by the 2021.03.06 update are unusual, although devastating for those impacted. Note the solution posted by @VLud in Post #6,077.
As others have highlighted - if you have a stable adapter then resist the temptation to update it, and all should be/remain well. CarlinkIt recommend not to update if all is well, and it seems clear that the clone versions are not assured to work with all updates either.
You may feel more comfortable with the guarantees associated with buying from Amazon, which in general is more expensive than Aliexpress, where delivery takes much longer and some people have bad experiences. (Personally I have not, and received a rebate against a different item that arrived damaged but serviceable, and I have no skin in this game.) Is the convenience of wireless CarPlay worth $100+ to you - it's up to you.
Yup, was asking about the $30 ones. Trying to keep an eye if those pop up again.

Worked flawlessly until 2 days ago
Does not connect anymore. Bluetooth connection and wi fi was not showing up anymore(cant see the device in my phone - ip12)
Contacted the seller- they gave me a whatsapp contact from an “it” guy
He sent me a firmware to update the device - all went well- can see wi fi - still unable to connect wireless
Went back to them - got another firmware with below message - i was not able to get it to that Bluetooth connection screen
So far the wireless conection is not working anymore. If i remove the carlinkit device and use a lightning cable only, CarPlay starts instantly on my car display

Flash using Ludwigs Custom AUTOKIT firmware Feb 2021 version (not March) then test, if all OK.
Doesn’t hurt to also unpair/remove the old BT connection from BT Menu, and car from Settings - General - CarPlay menu.
Install my CarPlay UI theme.
Just flashed Vlud's CFW and TireGuy6's customer theme, amazing! Wasn't sure how it would work as mine isn't a branded Carlinkit or Carplayair dongle, just a £30 one off Amazon, but obviously has the same internals! Just out of curiosity, has anyone been able to set their delay to less than 500ms? 500ms works ok for me, but anything less stutters like crazy!
I also have a 2017 VW Gold Mk7.5 GTD with the digital cockpit, but the phone and audio tabs on the instrument cluster just said "CarPlay" and no music info, also CarPlay doesn't show in the instrument cluster and if I use apple maps, it disabled the cars built in SatNav. I'm guessing this is manufacturer restrictions that cannot be lifted?

500 was boarder line for me, had to change to 700 to make sure no stutter at all
Disabling a second navigation is standard procedure, I have the same behaviour in Mercedes NTG5.5 COMAND multimedia.

Noticed also that this fw version is faster to conect than the “original” so win win

I've got a VW Mk7.5 GTI; 500ms works fine for me, but anything less than that stutters so I think that's the max for us. We don't have the digital cockpit here in the U.S. but yes that's expected behavior; the VW Active Info Display can only display info from the factory nav/infotainment system in the instrument cluster, nothing from CarPlay unfortunately. This is true for factory wired/wireless CarPlay, not just the dongle.
Wow, My device including "hardware error: wifi" has been downgraded to 2020.11.10 from 2021.03.06 successfully.
