Updated the infotainment firmware of my 2017 Mazda 3 to version 74.00.310 and the carlinkit 3.0 adapter with latest firmware has been running decently stable.

Issues experienced so far:

- when I first connected the adapter, the infotainment would show a black screen. That was resolved by “power cycling” the car. Turned it off, locked it, waited a few minutes and turned it back on.

- the adapter failed to start once but that was quickly fixed by turning off/on Apple CarPlay on the iPhone settings.

- one time, the infotainment crashed during a cold start but it recovered and everything started backup.

So yeah, not 100% stable but much better compared to my previous experience with this same adapter. Not sure where the improvements are. It’s either the Mazda or carlinkit firmware.

We will see how long this lasts. I think these adapters have overheating/burnout issues.

Instead of doing the power cycling, I believe you only need to "switch the video source" by:
1. Make sure the engine is running AND the car is at a completely stop spot(in garage/parking lot/red traffic light)
2. Hit the brake and shift to Reverse to switch video input to the reverse camera. Wait for the camera image to show.
3. Shift back to P, N or D

The CarPlay image should display in a few seconds.

Thanks for the tip. Infotainment crashed for the 2nd time. I wonder what causes that..

Someone had said the v.74 is for the official wireless CarPlay system.
I had the v.74 before but I am back to the v.70.00.367

I've been running the 74.x Mazda firmware for the past few weeks, along with the current Carlkinit software... I sometimes get the blank screen, but that appears to be just the infotainment unit being in CarPlay mode and showing a blank screen. I can easily get out of it by pressing and holding the home button so that the infotainment system goes back to the Mazda screen and then repeating that to get back in CarPlay mode. After going back, CarPlay behaves normally. I've had one or two reboots in two-three weeks always right on startup, so it has not been a big deal for me... certainly not big enough to roll back to 70.x.

I did not know holding the home button would kick it back to the Mazda screen. I learned something today!
Thank you.

FW 74.00.310 has been more stable for me compared to 70.x even though it has wireless AA/CP code in it. Maybe the new carlinkit FW plays nicer with it. Who knows. Just hope the adapter doesn't crap out due to heat..

Well, now my home button doesn’t work in CarPlay via carlinkit. Works fine in wires CarPlay. Ugh..

This has been observed with Mazda and multiple brands of adapter. It started with iOS 15.4 I believe. It is intermittent and you can press the back button on the command knob to do most of what you need. Restarting the phone might “fix” it too.

Ahh yes, restarting the phone did the trick. I can live with that hah. Thanks for the tip.

for some reason Siri doesn't work anymore. It reacts to calling it, but doesn't execute the command given (call, etc.)

Hi All,

I have a really old v2 USB-C CarPlay Adapter, it won't allow any OTA update to complete it shows a new version available being 2021.03.06.1343. I have tried literally every USB firmware update, tried them as U2W_Update.img (was a Green UI). I have even tried renaming the rollback to U2W_AUTOKIT_Update.img and also tried U2W_SYD_Update.img with no luck.

I just don't understand why it isn't accepting any firmware, just shows red light when connected to AC power using a 10W USB wall adapter. Every time doing the OTA update it says Upgrade Failed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In terms of the file name, all that matters is what the UI is now. So if at some point you upgraded it to the new-style red UI then you must use "U2W_AUTOKIT_Update.img" as the file name. Conversely if it is still on the green UI then the only file name that it will recognize is U2W_Update.img"

Try a different USB stick (small capacities like 8GB or less seem to work better for this) and make sure it's formatted as FAT32 using the MBR scheme. It can be helpful to use a flash drive that has its own activity LED, so you can see at what point in the boot process the Carlinkit accesses it (if at all). You should also try a different USB power brick. If you have an authentic Apple iPad one those are known to work well, but lots of others should be fine too.

Also, you can experiment with putting the USB stick in the adapter before connecting it to power, or letting it boot up until you see the red light and then inserting the USB stick. I've had it work both ways, but depending on how quickly your USB stick mounts maybe it matters in some situations.

If you continually strike out then you might try flashing VLud's custom firmware (plenty of links to his GitHub earlier in the thread, or you can just google it).

I've been able to take my v2 USB-C Carlinkit all the way up to the most recent January 2022 firmware. My old v2 with the captive USB-A cable is orphaned on the the August 2021 firmware, but I think that's because it has the smaller rootFS partition. Any USB-C Carlinkit should be able to go to the current firmware revision.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, it won’t accept any update, tried using two usb sticks. I’ve confirmed it is correct formatting as I have another dongle and it accepts the upgrade/downgrade. This one in particular shows the red light (and Wi-Fi) but won’t let me downgrade regardless of what firmware version I try.

I tried the roll back, 2021.03.06 and vlud original firmware version which was 2020.08.04. I renamed as U2W_Update.img and U2W_AUTOKIT_Update.img neither started the process. It’s a shame the OTA version doesn’t have a rollback option, as that’s all I need to get it working. It is a usb-c version.

Rollback:

And the update it is trying to load on but fails OTA:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This has happened with my Mazda (2021 CX-5) occasionally since 15.4. Yes, restarting the phone usually fixes the issue.

Quick update on my carlinkit experience with my 2017 Mazda 3 running infotainment firmware 74.00.310:

- The infotainment crashes at least once a week during cold start but everything works again after.
- I've had to unplug the adapter 2-3 times since I bought it. This seems like a common issue.
- Sometimes I get a black screen when I start the car. Turning Carplay off and on in the iphone settings fixes it.

I have thought about downgrading the infotainment firmware but not sure it will correct any of the issues listed.

Also haven't played with the adapter's settings. Maybe a startup delay would help..

Hi, what FW are you using right now ? Is it vlud custom fw ? , then you would like to use official fw ?. if so it is required to use script. #6323 is my experience.

I believe it would have 2021.XX.XX before the 2021.03.06 as it keeps showing that update available. It’s definitely a green UI, but I have been unable to load any firmware or even custom, because no firmware file will be accepted. That is why I even tried the U2W_AUTOKIT_Update.img and none worked.

Happy to try anything at this point. If only the OTA version had a roll back I would be able to sort this out as the wifi still works. Won’t connect in any car just red light.

Thank you for your posting. It was very helpful.
Maybe it's my mistake, but I'll share what I did just in case.

Before updating, I confirmed by 192.168.50.2, then VER shows 2021.03.07.0001 (This is CustomFW 2021.03.06)

Then Update by USB with U2W.sh + ARMimg_maker + U2W_Update.img (CustomFW 2021.02.02), then I confirmed it again, but VER shows 2021.03.07.0001 again.

so Update again with U2W.sh + ARMimg_maker + U2W_Update.img (Official FW 2021.01.28),then confirm it.
Message show "Discover a new version" and proposed VER:2021.03.06.1413 , so I confirmed I can rollback to Official FW. then I update it with Official FW 2021.03.06 (USB is only stored U2W_Update.img). after that, it show "It is the latest version" and VER:2021.03.06.1343
I’ve just read this, in the 192.168.50.2 it shows 2021.03.06.1343 when you inserted your USB stick it accepted your updates each time. Mine just stays on solid red.

Hi, It seems situation is difference for my cases and your cases.
Especially you have confirmed it with another dongle. so I supposed your operation was no problem. but it is not updating...
I think you need the opinions of those who have more knowledge.

Yes exactly right. I would be keen to hear from anyone who can help. Happy to try anything at this point.
