I have a pretty bizarre observation and was wondering if anyone also encountered this. My carlinkit 3.0 is working almost perfectly fine but always crashes in one single location. Earlier i thought it's time related (because it happened a similar amount of time after leaving home) but apparently it's either some sort of radio interference that appears on that exact road or maybe GPS coordinates are crashing the system somehow. Toggling GPS in settings changes nothing and it does not happen neither in my 2018 BMW, nor in a pretty new Pioneer HeadUnit, both with wireless connection.
I've got the same thing with my 4.0. Didn't happen with my CarLinkit 3.0 but my 4.0 always hangs while crossing the same bridge every single time. Sometimes it reboots.
The bridge has cell antennas and high power lines nearby so I'm pretty sure its radio interference.

@Aliman12
I have checked what you said but it is weird. I went to 192.168.0.50, selected factory default and the Carlinkit rebooted itself. In the meantime I deleted the Carlinkit on the iPhone bluetooth menu. But when the Carlinkit booted up the menu screen was the same as in the photo I posted (everthing black and white and remembering my two iPhones) and then I had an alert in the iPhone asking to connect to the CarPlay. And then everything was the same, I had to reorganise the icons and change the wallpaper because the iPhone didn't remember the Carlinkit, but it seems that the Carlinkit didn't erase itself.

Since everything works fine except the initial menu I think I won't touch it more, but it is a bit frustrating.

Hi jurrus

I think your Adapter’s Firmware has become corrupted some how.

Go to 192.168.50.2 and it should show 4 menu items on the bottom of the screen.(Info,Manage,Settings,Advance)

Select “Manage” and it should show iPhones that are assigned/Connected to the Adapter. Try and delete the iPhone items there and then reset device.

However, if you want to chance it, I think you will need to re-install the firmware to fix it.
The menu screen should show correctly and not black & white.

But if it works just leave it, the menu screen would bother me too.

I personally have spare Adapters just in case something like this happens.

TL;DR

Are any of the many options reliable enough for daily use? I don't want/need something that requires constant updates and tweaks...
Your question has no simple answer.

If you want Wireless Carplay, then you will have to invest in research for your particular Vehicle, Head Unit etc.

The problem is these Adapters and Updates are a mess by these manufacturers. There is no order in which Updates & Adapters work.

Pick an Adapter and try, if it does not work return. However reading and doing some research you may find other contributors in this forum have the same Vehicle and have shown that it works.

Is all the trouble worth it YMMV. For me and others yes it is, because once you have a working Adapter you will not wont to go back to plugging in your iPhone to the car’s USB.

I think your 4.0 device is just broken.
4.0 is the update version of 3.0, Its stability and compatibility will only be better than 3.0.
I bought a 3.0 two years ago, and after using it for about a year, it appeared to be stuck and delayed. I tried updating it and it didn't work. Then they asked me to return it and exchange it for a 4.0. The 4.0 has been used since the end of last year, and it connects very smooth, without any delays or lags, also without the crashes you mentioned. So it should just be that your 4.0 is broken, you can ask the seller to replace it for you with a new one.

It sounds like your usb-c cable is faulty or not supplying enough power. I’d try another usb-c cable or even a usb-a to usb-c converter

I use the Hieha Wireless CarPlay Adapter (2022) in my 2017 VW Passat and it works pretty well. Occasionally, Siri will mess up but fix itself after a trigger or two. There’s a very minor delay when changing tracks but not anything that matters. Its reliable enough for me to regularly use it.

still rocking my one from mid 2020 that has issues once in a while. Did they ever release a better, faster unit? I have a Toyota

Anyone here have a 3rd gen. Mazda 3 or another Mazda model with the older infotainment? Curious what FW version you are running? I have the carlinkit 3.0 with the C2PLAYAir 2022.01.24 FW and it runs OK overall but I've been getting more infotainment crashes/reboots lately. Hoping there's a better FW version out there to try out.

Try do a Reset Network Settings on your iPhone, there is new versions of firmware but that shouldn’t be required as 2022.01.24 is very stable.

I'm running NA_70.00.353 on my 2019 Miata. Wireless CarPlay works well. There is a newer firmware - NA_70.00.367A that is also supposed to work well with wireless CarPlay. An even newer version - 74.00.230A - did NOT work well with wireless CarPlay. I don't kow if that ever got fixed.

I’m on 74.00.311 so that may explain the crashes/reboots. I may have to go back to 70.00.367A if possible.

Tried that but no luck. I’m running the latest infotainment FW so that may be the cause of my issues..

it is the carplay one. iphone directly to the port works fine
The problem is that the “USB-C” port of the CarPlay adapter is not true USB-C. CarLinkIt and others sell a specific cable to connect to cars with USB-C ports - it looks like a standard USB-C to USB-C cable but is wired differently. To avoid buying such a cable I tried a USB-C male to USB-A female adapter in my Volvo XC60 and plugged in the regular USB-A cable from my CarLinkIt 2.0 and Podofo units but that did not work either. As the car is a loaner I have given up trying and live with cable again…

@mecutler how are your phone calls? Can people hear you OK? People say I sound too far away and they can hear me better when I connect to CarPlay via USB..

I have not had any trouble with phone calls, although I do not make or receive them very often in the car. It has been weeks – maybe months – since the last one, so I'm not sure how it would be currently.

It is a standard USB C port. However, there are many different cables that support the same connector and all are not interchangeable depending upon the devices—the usb c cable situation is an abomination.

Newer Volvos and Polestars have a different issue in that you must use a specific port on the car for carplay as the other ports ONLY support charging. I have a Polestar and that port is identified with a white outline around it. Worse is that the standard carlinkit (version 1-4) does not support Volvos or Polestarts with Android Automative infotainment systems—only the ‘ai box’ versions do. Rumor has it they will have an update to fix this but it’s been 5 months already. 😞 They ‘ai boxes’ were updated in August to support these cars.

Is it definite that the ai box works on new Volvo? My new XC60 was supposed to be delivered last Saturday, fingers crossed for tomorrow.
