I love how this claims that “all” Apple watches have this known defect.

So if I’ve owned 2x series 0, a series 1, a series 2, and a series 3 watch but never had this issue, I MUST be part of the conspiracy!!

I’m in the same boat my Apple 1 watches screen popped up and detached it’s not fully off yet but clearly only connected by cables. Hopefully this will prompt replaces or atleast fixes.

I mean it’s 3 years old any chance they would fix this?

If it goes out of warranty and this happens because of a design flaw, and you have to cough up $300 to fix it, it's not a minor issue.

I had an iMac that got bricked at about 2.5 years, after warranty and AppleCare had run out. The display started glitching and eventually just died. After some investigation, I determined it would have been far too expensive to make it worth fixing (Apple wouldn't pay for it and they weren't even sure they could find the replacement parts), so I just had to trash it, and this was a loaded $2,500 iMac.

It was only later that I discovered this was a known issue where the glue they used on the GPU was defective and failed over time due to heat and the GPU became detached (obviously making the display not work).
It's minor in the sense that it affects a small subset of users, not a widespread problem. It happens in large scale manufacturing with thousands of varying external factors.

What I would do, is make a genius appointment to your local Apple Store, and explain to them the situation , what they would likely doing is just replace your watch with a newer model versus repairing it, assuming its defective. For reference, Apple does not carry replacement watches in store, so they would ship your defective watch out and send you a replacement watch via mail.

Even if this does happen to someone and it’s unexpected, there is a reason Apple will stand behind the product and make it right for the customer. In A way, this article at least shows the consumer they can address this with Apple specifically what others might be experiencing to rectify the problem. Its still good information To know.

Wrong. Apple has been repeatedly turning people away, refusing to fix under warranty. They have done the same thing many times in the past with many different products, and only came around when forced to by suit.

Apple has been repeatedly turning people away, refusing to fix under warranty.

Blanket statement. Then I would highly suggest you read through some of the post(s) in this thread, because that’s not mainly the case. And what you’re saying is completely generalized without knowing how many people have been turned away versus they actually assisted with this specific problem.

They have done the same thing many times in the past with many different products, and only came around when forced to by suit.

Aside from hyperbole, feel free to provide any examples you feel necessary.

Customer satisfaction surveys say otherwise. Please provide your evidence rather than baseless statements.

People are so ANGRY over the iPhone battery issues my local Apple store now has a full time cop stationed inside. One of the Apple employees told me there were multiple physical altercations with customers until they got the uniformed cop.

Wow! I've got to say, I've never even heard of this happening before except for what I remember reading here about defective batteries expanding in some watches and making the display pop off. (That can happen with ANY battery though. I have an iPad that has a permanently deformed back cover and cracked screen from a battery that expanded in it.)

I wonder if the glue the screens are attached with is weakened in certain environments like high humidity/high temperature or something? I've owned a series 0 and now a series 3 and my wife has a series 3 too. No issues here so far, or with any of my co-workers who bought Apple watches.

Wowwww so it isn’t just me! I got the original Watch in June 2015 and am on my fourth one. I’ve had the screen detach THREE TIMES. Crazy.

Apple said if it happens again they’ll replace it with a Series 3.

Luckily all of them were replaced for free. Only 1 was replaced under AppleCare. Other 2 outside of AppleCare.

Which means what specifically to the article? Two separate issues, and you don’t know Apple’s reaction to this versus just what someone files a lawsuit over.

Now I don't think they all do. However, that being said, I do think all of a certain series are. I have two first generation watches that both suffered the swollen battery with the screen lifting off as a consequence. The first they replaced easily. The second they said it was only covered for 2 years. After talking with multiple people and citing an internal memo, finally got someone to replace the second one. It's 3 years, 2 on top of the original one for this issue.

It's a defect, covered for free if no water or other damage has occurred.

I think the inconsistent way Apple handled this might have caused many to pay out of pocket for no reason.

What about screens that suddenly stop working. Just about a week ago mine stopped responding to swipes. I went to apple and they told me it's an out of warranty repair. It's a 1st Gen, I don't want to spend $249 towards repairing a first gen device, even though it cost me $650 with tax.

This literally just happened to my 42mm SS Apple Watch 1. They tried to charge me $536 to fix it then I called again to speak with a higher up and lowered it to $79 plus shipping. How do I get in on this?

Keep moving up the chain. This just happened with my husband's 42mm.

Ask them to check their internal memo.

Keep asking for new people. Took me about 4 regular reps and 2-3 higher level advisors before they honored it.

My replacement is on its way right now.

Happened to me. Actually cut my finger, too. But they replaced it, on the spot. Was impressed that it still worked.

Same exact thing happened to me - less than a week after I got my refurb series 3 to replace me S0. They told me they couldn't replace it in store, so I've sent it in for repair at no charge.

I even cut my finger as well. Mostly was super bummed because it was day one of a week long vacation and had to go watchless the rest of the trip.

I got my parents each an original Apple Watch for Christmas when they first came out and the screens on both of them came off as well. If I contact Apple, would they do anything now? They’ve been sitting collecting dust for years. :/

they will replace them. Once I got a series 1 (yay) and one was replaced with another series 0 (boo)

If its swelling caused by the battery they will replace it free of charge. There should be no issues but you have to make sure the tech support rep makes note of this. Each time they start out with the default script then put me on pause and come back with the newer details.

They will hold a charge on your credit card until the defect is confirmed to be related to this battery issue (and not just you prying off the screen or something :)) then you get refunded when the replacement ships.

I didn't realize they had Apple Stores in the ghetto.

I responded to the thread you started. As I mentioned, I don’t think Apple will repair the watch, they likely will just replace it with a newer model. Mainly just because it’s discontinued and it’s more efficient to replace the watch versus try to repair it with labor and costs for a first Gen Watch. Of course, I can’t speak for the repair watch depot decisions.

It’s pretty wild. None of them have had battery swells either. I know people who have had zero issues and then there’s me who is on his 3rd replacement.

A known issue or design defect never has to surface. Similarly an issue does not confirm a design defect.

You’ll have to do root cause analysis to determine if there is a design flaw.
