People who have received defective units like me are complaining. That’s why there is finally a class action suit.

And Apple did absolutely nothing to remedy your issue and fix the problem for you?

When white middle class customers are getting violent in the store, maybe Apple has a problem.

It'd be all over the news if there were really customers constantly brawling with Apple employees over battery issues. Seriously. The news media LOVEs anything that's anti-Apple. Just look at MacRumors. They make a killing on ads from any story that paints Apple in a negative light (as you can see those are the threads that draw the most traffic and comments).

I know a lot of security folks. They LOVE to make things into a bigger deal than they really are. A mall security guard who's hired just to stand around because a store is busy is highly likely to make his job seem more important/dangerous by telling people he's there because there are frequent brawls. Reality is generally far more tame than security guards stories.

This just happened with my spouse's series 0, I called and Apple replaced via fedex boxes in a amazing 3 day time frame. Out of warranty and no AppleCare. I was completely satisfied with the results.

Can't find how can I join the class action. I had my S3 display cracked with no impact on it, just net of cracks appeared from nowhere and display detached

Usually Apple store has great service but in this case in Palo Alto store I had really awfull experience and (of course) stupidly huge price for the repair of 6month device

Doubt it's really widespread but all it takes is 1 person to file a class action suit.
Happened to my wife’s series 0. We’ve owned 3 watches so that’s a 1 in 3 success rate of the screen falling off for my family.

I do believe this is a wider issue.

You make invalid assumptions. I currently own $100K+ of Apple stock and could sell a few shares to replace my broken Apple Watch. I won’t though, because there is a problem here that needs to be addressed.

(BTW - Apple offered to repair my watch for $280)

Maybe what’s happening here is that the glue holding screen to body is stronger than the screen itself, so that becomes the weak point for inflated battery to release pressure.

I read in another thread about some Apple ‘Genius’ who wouldn’t replace an AW because they said it had a crack along the screen rather than just the whole screen detaching (that would have normally happened) and therefore told the complainant in his most humbled arrogant manner that it was his own fault the screen had broken off.

Nearly all customers are happy, just look at the satisfaction results. A small number of issues are going to occur when you have millions of customers let’s not blow this out of proportion here, yea we are on Macrumours and i know a lot of people like to bash Apple and claim they are doomed or they are no longer invested in things like the Mac and blah blah blah....but this really isn’t a major issue.

Your one person, not being funny but most people are happy so maybe it’s you who’s in the bubble.

The bubble I refer to is that bubble where all Apple customers are fully satisfied, per your exact words.

Lots of people can love their Apple devices at the same time than they are not fully satisfied. Instead of showing blind love what they want is that Apple solve that so annoying problems that their devices have. We must remain critics in order to require from Apple to do better in a lot of ways.

Hmm interesting.

I have a crack on the corner of my Series 2 screen that I have no idea how it got there.

Assumed it must have been a bump or knock but i checked every time i've accidentally banged it on something and never saw a post-bump crack. Just noticed it out of the blue and was all "wtf?"...

But... Apple replaces the displays for free under the warranty so other than an inconvenience lawsuit (which is that even a thing?) there's not really any damages

I was told that a replacement out of warranty would cost almost as much as a new series 3 sport.

So i currently still have the crack and am just waiting for the s4 to come out.

Never had an issue with mine or with anyone I know who has an Apple Watch. Oh well.

Its BS!
My series 1 screen popped out a month ago and since its out of waranty I decided it was time to upgrade so I did
When I was paying for the new one, I mentioned it to the apple rep and he said bring it in cause 90% of the time is a free replacement cause of a swolen battery
Apple doesnt service them in the store, they are sent out and shipped back to you

This happened to my Apple Watch original TWICE and both times I called into AppleCare, both times without warranty, and got a free replacement in 2-3 days.

Yes but you wouldn’t pay for the replacement since it’s covered under warranty

And yeah I’m waiting to upgrade my SS side this year — I have a S0 SS and a S2 SB so it’s the silver’s turn this year

Except in the case of user inflicted damage, the screens should never just fall off. Battery swelling or not. If it does, it would either be improper assembly or worse, a design flaw. Both Apple responsibilities and the user should never be made to pay for it, whether the product is inside or outside of the warranty period. Thankfully Apple appears to be going along with this sentiment based on the majority of anecdotes here on these forums. However, if they in some cases haven't, then I can understand the rationale behind filing a lawsuit.
It shouldn't be luck-of-the-draw, where some get their watches replaced, while others don't. A (near) trillion $ company can/should afford consist service.

I recently woke up to find my Apple Watch (the most expensive one) cracked shattered and unusable while it charged throughout the night. I called Apple and they said it was just over the warranty and could do nothing about it. Called the store an they blamed Apple. Called Apple back and they said I had to get another one. Didn’t even pay off the first one. Now making two payments! What happened to Apple standing behind its products! Livid here. How can I get information on joining in this lawsuit?
Take it to an Apple store

If the wheel is sticking, it run it under warm water. That’s what the Apple support article says
I love my watch (Series 3), but Apple has a ways to go with it, the wheel is sticky, buttons don't always know when being pressed, and if the glass pops off all I'll say is Cupertino we have a problem (I don't get it wet, don't abuse it, etc.). I'd like to think that Apple will be a responsible vendor if this happens but knowing Apple it may take this lawsuit to nudge them to do the right thing.

Four examples that Apple resolved the issue for the customer And made it right. I think the notion is that tech should be perfect, it’s not. But it’s about the customer service that stands behind the product to ensure the customer is happy with the product. Not sure any other company that will provide the customer service that Apple does.

This. I’ve had three Apple Watches, this happened to my series 1. They asked what kind of sun cream I use and replaced it immediately.

Doesn't this dramatically improve the iFixit separability scores, the watches practically dissemble themselves.

Apple can claim they won over the the Swiss watch market but I am pretty sure the face never fell out of a Rolex.

I'm 99.9% sure you already know this but just in case: Rolex doesn't make smartwatches.

Same here. Apple replaced it with a Series 1 for free earlier this year even though it was well out of warranty.

Exactly the same thing. I was typing away and felt a pop and looked at my watch to see the bottom of the face had lifted. Called Apple and they replace my series 0 with a series 1. Not a big deal.. yet - it seems to be at the 2.5+ year mark and at the moment only affecting the early adopters.

Doubt it's really widespread but all it takes is 1 person to file a class action suit.
Or, as in my case, 1 person that had it happen at least twice (my most recent replacement is now almost two years old, so I forget whether it is watch #3 or #4). But no damages for me b/c w Applecare, all got replaced for free. The Genius guys always acted like they'd never seen it before, but did not hesitate to replace, no questions asked.

I bought two Apple Sport Nike Watches for me and my wife in December of 2016.

In February of 2017 the photo shown of the screen falling of with an exact square face happened to my wife’s watch.

She wasn’t wearing it when it happened. Apple tried to blame her for moving around roughly but I told them it was impossible as she was late into her pregnancy and wasn’t wearing it.

When they found out she was late into her pregnancy they replaced it for free.

Glad to be vindicated.

I agree if people DO have issues then yes that is not being FULLY satisfied and if i were in that situation i would want any issues sorted out. My point is that i personally have had no issues, i can't speak for everyone else (except for the people i know well like family and friends) but every Apple product that i have had has worked or does work really well.

The one time there was an issue and i didn't even know about it, but it was the 3TB hard drive replacement program on my 2012 iMac, i had an email from Apple to say that my iMac might be one of the ones affected, i went online typed in the serial number and sure enough it was one of the ones affected, i contacted Apple and within an hour a repair company called me explaining that they would pick up my iMac the next day which they did and within a couple of days i had my iMac back, was that inconvenient? yes but i can't say that it was a bad experience or issues because Apple went out of their way to fix it for me with excellent customer service.

Apart from the above iMac issue i have not had an issue with Apple products, all my iPhone's, iPad's, Mac's, Apple TV, HomePod and Apple Watch work very well. Most of my friends (except one who has HTC) have iPhone's and iPad's and they haven't had any issues, one of my friends who edits for a living and spends most of his time on his MacBook Pro hasn't had any issues with the keyboard yet, my point is they are all happy and satisfied customers.

I'm not saying that everyone is going to avoid issues and be 100% satisfied that's simply not possible, of course there will be issues such as the failing keyboards on the MacBook Pro's, bendgate on the iPhone and some of the Apple Watch issues BUT i think it's how Apple handle it rather than the actual issues, in my experience Apple have the best customer service.

it's only my opinion i'm sure some people will disagree and i'm even sure people will say the usual stuff like Tim Cook should be fired and so on, i can't agree with that as i'm happy with my Apple devices, if i wasn't i wouldn't be a customer and i certainly wouldn't be spending the amount of money that i do over the years on Apple products :)

Minor issue, but people will call the demise of Apple over this.
haha.. no, not this one, BUT this is just the beginning.... Apple's hardware designs are going to circle back and start biting them in the ass... the next few years will be full of class action lawsuits. Although, the can afford it... for now.

On to the facts:

The main reason that these watches have 'self detaching' faces is from the use of glue. Glue holds the watch face to the metal housing and when the watch is charging it produces enough heat to warm the metal housing and evenly soften the glue around the edge of the face, and the right amount of forward movement will cause the face to simply fall off. (I have personally seen it happen/ and have been able to re-create the issue)

The other reason it can detach is from an expanding internal battery, which can apply just enough pressure to force the face off.

Either way, it shouldn't be happening.
