I understand it's not that big of a deal for many, but for those of us who have been using Macs since the 90s and prior, this is an incredible shame.
Right there with you. Started with Macs in 1983 and had almost all of them since. That sound from the early 1990's to the MacBook Pro 16g I'm using as I write this have all had that familiar sound. And yes, I like the identity of the glowing Apple too. Sad to see these changes. Something about tradition and familiarity of what has gone on before...

Part of me finds this sad for nostalgic reasons, like many of you.

The other part of me genuinely doesn't care at all. Would any of us it if it had never been there in the first place? Probably not. It's far from a high priority of things I'd rather Apple hadn't changed about its machines or software in recent years.

As per my usual philosophy on these things though, why not just make it an option? Actually I dislike the whole notion of the machine being powered on as soon as you open it more than the chime not being present, that should be an option too IMHO.

I gotta say, I'm amazed by all the whining over this product release. This is a real upgrade compared to the previous model. And just about every thread previous, somebody managed to bitch about the lack of an update. Now it's here and people still aren't happy. I have the 2016 (and a 2015 before that) 12" MacBook and it hasn't had the glowing logo either. It's because of the thinness of the screen, I think, and maybe because it's LED and not backlit. Not a big deal. As to the sound, I rarely boot or reboot it; only when it does OSX updates really so I don't ever hear it anyway. And the TB3 bandwidth issue... who really needs to push 40GB/s X 4 on 13" laptop? Honestly. If the keyboard is better than the MacBook then great because I love my MacBook one. The Touch Bar seems a great compromise to add some touch features without getting grease/prints on the screen. And yes, the price is high, but, hell, I paid $1600 for my BTO MacBook so $1799.00 doesn't seem that bad to me. My only real bitch is the 16GB max RAM limit. Battery time or not, it should be an option with a warning. Otherwise, it seems cool. I can't wait to try one in a store. Who knows, maybe I'll upgrade and sell my MacBook.

instead of removing it, keep the chime option in the preferences pane for people who like to keep it

Tim is all about neutering products

For real? What is next? They wanna change the Apple logo? Sounds like they want to get rid of all that Steve put his heart into. Wow.

I was defending Tim for years. When everybody wanted Jonny to be the new CEO i was like Tim is the right man. He has the long term vision Steve had. How wrong I was. Tim has his own vision. Its Tims Apple now. I like some things he changed. The most things he changed I hate.
At least you woke up, that's a good thing.

When Apple starts selling appliance like kitchen knife rather than mbp and idevices, I hope you can answer that question because I know Martha Stewart can.
maybe when that day comes I

i don't agree Apple has always pushed the industry and users in new directions, like it or not, it's what I love about them and am glad to see that continue, BTW Steve neutered a lot of products when he returned to Apple, open doc, newton etc...

I will quote Steve, I think theirs a lot more people loving Apple than hating. you don't have to buy their products.

Maybe the chime caused minute amounts of poisonous substances to emanate from the speakers, or perhaps they contributed to climate change. I'm sure we'll hear a half hour long spiel with a small video from some random non-white male person how environmentally friendly not having the chime is at the next Apple "Event".

No, I do not care about the sound. Now, why is it that I'm so disappointed in Apple? Many A things don't concern me personally like Mac Pro but, being a part of this massive community it does affect me as well when I hear/see them disappointed. Why has Apple turned into a gang of robbers?.

I'm just not understanding the reasoning. If they said it boots up so fast the chime can't play I'd be totally down with that but this feels like change just for change sake. Big picture it doesn't matter much it's just weird.

So you often need to open your laptop but leave it powered off? Is there ever a good reason for that?

To be fair, it occurred to me momentarily that it's easier to see specks of dust and smears when you're cleaning the screen when it's off, but now I'll simply turn the brightness to zero, then clean the screen - no biggy ....

In the late 90s. Imagine an iPhone with a startup chime. Apple's about aesthetic over nostalgia, and the startup chime seems completely out of place on a modern Mac.

Well, cell phones did have distinct audio startup tones which were part of their branding, some still do. ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon all still have distinctive audio motifs that serve as branding in their marketing. Many companies have distinctive audio cues that connect customers to the brand.

The Mac chime is absolutely iconic, and has less to do with nostalgia and everything to do with brand recognition. It's as valuable as any other audio branding motif. And there's no need for it to go.

Yes I get that the new MacBook never turns off. But is that to say it never reboots? I don't understand why a company would lose an absolutely iconic branding tool completely. This really isn't much different in some respects to Apple removing the Apple from its branding and replacing it with nothing, or the word "Apple", or a green circle. What purposes does it serve?

A little sad that this is gone, but who actually shuts down their Macs these days anyway?

Aside from (very rare) system crashes, I'll only ever reboot to apply system updates. Other than that, it's just sleep mode or log out.

The introduction of auto boot just suggests to me that there were too many dummies out there not using sleep properly.

And that does raise the question, what sounds accompany the problems you mention? Is rebooting truly instantaneous? And what's wrong with an audio confirmation when performing a forced reboot to confirm all is well and the task has been accomplished?

It's hard to believe there's no place this iconic audio branding anywhere on a MacBook anymore.

Let's see, they took away the pulsating sleep indicator light. They took away MagSafe. They took away the illuminated Apple logo. They took away the chime. They took away the power button. What's left of the Mac's soul? Why not take my backlit keys too! Basically they took away everything that made the MacBook Pro a Mac in my opinion. I will keep my 2012 rMBP 15" until it will no longer chime on.

It's sad, but I just see them as another greedy company now. I've been with Apple since 2005 and spent tens of thousands of dollars on computers and upgrades since then. I used to upgrade annually, and sometimes more often when better hardware was released. I've owned everything from a mini to an iMac, and essentially everything except a Mac Pro. From the first iPhone to the first iPad to the first iPad mini. iPods and whatever. I used to "think" Apple thought differently. I now know they don't, and if they ever did, they surely don't now.

I've already switched over to the darkside.. my Pixel will be here tomorrow. I can't say for certain or if ever, but I never saw myself leaving iPhone, and I don't see myself leaving Mac. But someday that may happen. And it would be a sad day.

Now Apple doesn't have to modify standard PC components to add the Mac sound.

New Macs: PC parts put into Apple cases, and an entry in the OS X machine list to "bless" that machine's design to run OS X (oops forgot, OS X is dead... it's MacOS...).

Apple has done away with the traditional startup chime on its new MacBook Pro lineup because the machines automatically power on when the lid is opened.
For Apple having always been strong on brand identity and marketing, this is a stupid move.
What's next? The Apple icon replaced by a lemon ? It'd be more suitable anyway, the way they're going.

Geez Louise. I cannot believe the carping here. I suspect that there is nothing that would not tick off some of the people here.

Remember the Rainbow Apple Logo? It's gone. Floppy drives? Gone. Built-in Blueray? Never happened, and lots of folks whined about that. You're tempted to get a Surface with Windows because the USB is missing and the Chime is gone and the apple doesn't glow? Sheesh.

[doublepost=1477878136][/doublepost]
the question is can you love the new Apple?
not as much as we used to I guess.

how can you compare something like floppy drive and disc drive to a signature iconic feature/design aspect like chime or glowing logo? obviously removal of disk drives was because of some legit reasons, but what is the legit reason to remove design features that everyone loved for years?
also there is zero reason to eliminate USB ports,SD card reader, even Magsafe specially on "Pro" line of laptops.it's just stupid.and it's unbelievable that you are trying to compare that to removal of floppy/optical drives.(they were becoming obsolete/less used, took too much space and used power, prone to defect etc)whereas SD card,USB are absolutely essential.
