It was cute but annoying in meetings. But how will we know when to press key sets during boots to get into special states?

I didn't see any comment about this yet ... but the startup chime is, IMO, rather useful as part of the PRAM reset process. You're told to hold down the key sequence at power-up until you hear the chime sound twice, to confirm it completed.

With no chime, how is this going to work? Do we at least get a green power LED blinking twice to look for or anything?

It's mainly because of the extra-loud chime after a PRAM reset that I'm glad the chime is gone. It always wakes up my girlfriend when I do it late at night. Though I do hope they added some sort of visual cue for the timing on a PRAM reset.

It's slight hyberbole to declare a glowing logo, an extension cable and a startup chime is everything that made Apple special.

The magsafe connector is more important and useful than any of those things.

I think the extension cord is BS. The regular cord is so short it's useless and we pay how much for these machines? We can have the cord included.

As much as these things were great, all good things come to an end. Did you really expect the glowing Apple logo and a chime to be present in every macbook forever? They were cool things, but really guys, it's not the end of the world.
No, it's not the end of the world. But it's the end of whimsy. That was one thing Apple used to do well -- make technology accessible and delightful. I've heard that the startup sound was Jobs' homage to The Beatles; it's supposed to imitate the opening chord of Hard Day's Night. Little touches like that didn't make your computer function any better, but they made it friendlier. That's what I'm starting to miss from Apple.

Oh sure. Most definitely you'll abandon the Mac for a windows machine. I can only imagine the moaning and groaning that move will produce. If anyone here who threatens to abandon the mac because the apple logo no longer shines into the night, etc, I'll eat my hat and post a youtube video of it.
That's quite a bizarre post to make - strange that you'd simplify without asking more about the situation. Let me explain; I run a little game studio and my tools are Windows-only but I spend my down time on Mac because I like Photos, email, Garageband, Pages, organising music in iTunes is much nicer on OSX too, plus Time Machine is an incredible tool! But I can migrate as all my Apple computers dual boot into Windows (one 7, and three 10 machines), all my drives are partitioned 50-50 between the two OS'.

But it's numbers too. I spend around £4,000 in the Apple Store each year for either myself, my partner, or our studio. After 3 years they might as well sack someone because that's their wages.

Buuuut who knows! Maybe they'll see the 'pro' backlash and do right by the iMac line. I'd really rather not lose OSX but the MBP is no longer a system I want - especially with Microsoft really stepping up. My next big purchase will either be an iMac or a MS Surface Studio.

While certainly no showstopper - it will be missed!

P.s if you don't like the chime in the existing Mbp - it can be disabled!

Apple is a new machine now, my kids use iPads all the time, my wife uses her iPhone all the time, I am a software engineer and use macs and pc's for work, but the truth is the only reason the pc was ever a consumer product was because Apple hadn't invented the iPhone or iPad, and thank god they did, cos I love how my kids interact with them.

As successful as Apple have been with its iPhone it's great to see them still innovating with the mac and Tim say this week how much the Mac means to Apple.

I'm not really bothered because I've got about 20 of those extension cables laying around, but more importantly it comes with a 2 meter USB-C which is longer than the magsafe cable was.

A little sad that this is gone, but who actually shuts down their Macs these days anyway?

Aside from (very rare) system crashes, I'll only ever reboot to apply system updates. Other than that, it's just sleep mode or log out.

The introduction of auto boot just suggests to me that there were too many dummies out there not using sleep properly.

They truly want the younger generation though. Though in college and slightly older.
Then lower the price. Forcing a customer to swallow $3600 in base model is plainly insane. Young and college students can hardly buy MacBook in this price, with or without education discount.

Are you F******* kidding me... Now you can't even choose when to start your MBP anymore... What are you doing Apple. Stupidity has officially come to a whole new level... RIP Apple

I am glad couple of people here realized the real story is the auto power up hidden under the sound story. Waiting for trolls(apple apologists).

I do. If my laptop sleeps for awhile and then I open it and want to watch a video with headphones, it only plays through the speakers. I've filed several big reports on this and Apple doesn't seem to care. It started with later versions of El Capitan through sierra 10.12.1.

Funny thing is I actually know a few people in college who only bought a Mac for the status and having that glowing logo. It's gone now along with the chime now but I'll not move back to windows because of a glowing logo being surplus to requirements

Oh I’m not done yet.

sudo nvram BootAudio=%00
sudo nvram BootAudio=%01
So we resisters now need to start digging into Mac OS X in real.
Yes, I still use Mac OS X , not macOS. ;)

I'm always amazed when young people are so resistant to change.
There are just so many examples changes are not leading to a good result. Learning how to preserve is equally important as embracing innovation.
This is young should also learn.
