Ironic Apple come out of markets that they cannot make enough money in. This rate the Mac will be just that a very niche market because the average consumer won't be able to afford a Mac and others will just refuse because of stupid design decisions. Maybe they truly see the future as iOS. Apple under Tim seem out of touch.
Think about what the MacBook Pro is trying to compete against: the SurfaceBook or XPS 13/15. If you look at the configurations, even for the XPS 13/15, they're in the same price range for comparable features.
Let's start with the SurfaceBook
SurfaceBook (128GB SSD i5) $1499 vs. $1299 2015 Old MacBook Pro (Haswell CPU 128GB SSD i5)
SurfaceBook (128GB SSD i5) $1499 vs. $1499 New MacBook Pro (No Touch Bar w/ 256GB SSD i5)
SurfaceBook (256GB SSD i5) $1699 vs $1799 New MacBook Pro ( Touch Bar w/ 256GB SDD i5)
SurfaceBook (512GB SSD i5) $1999 vs. $1999 New MacBook Pro(Touch Bar w/ 512GB SSD i5)
So, unless you absolutely need pen input, the two are very comparable in terms of price and specs. For the 13" it basically comes down to: do you need/want a detachable screen with pen input? If the answer is 'yes' then you either need to get an iPad Pro or save the money and get a SurfaceBook. But honestly, what 'killer app' uses pen input on Windows 10? All of the best pen input apps are on iOS. But, let's keep going...
SurfaceBook (256GB SSD i7 nVidia dGPU) $2099 vs. $2099 New MackBook Pro (Touch Bar w/ 2516GB SSD i7)
So now, it becomes a little more interesting. For the same price you get a dGPU and pen input. I could see why people might want the dGPU. So now, if you want a dGPU we gotta compare the 15" new MacBook Pro.
I could keep going, but my point being: If you actually compare the computers spec for spec and price for price they're actually very comparable, especially for price. The MacBook Pro is NOT for your 'average' consumer. Just as the SurfaceBook is not priced for your average consumer. Sure, people might still buy it, but chances are the average consumer is going to spend $500 on an Asus/Acer/HP/Dell.
It's like saying the SurfaceBook is a 'niche product' which it currently is. Sure, Microsoft is selling a bunch of SurfaceBooks and its a successful product, just as successful as the MacBook Pro is.
Edit: Ironically, this is where the iPhone and iPad come into play. For that kind of money, someone could buy an iPad. The iPad is the 'cheap' or 'inexpensive' Mac experience. Why get a computer when you can just get a Mac instead? For the average person, that's enough. Apple's answer for the 'average person' is the iPad & iPhone!
