Ironic Apple come out of markets that they cannot make enough money in. This rate the Mac will be just that a very niche market because the average consumer won't be able to afford a Mac and others will just refuse because of stupid design decisions. Maybe they truly see the future as iOS. Apple under Tim seem out of touch.

Seen a lot of your posts belittling the "whiners". Could you explain one thing to me. iPhone 7 was released a month ago and it cannot be connected to the MacBook Pro without a dongle. How is that good design that your two latest products don't play with each other? And please don't say wifi because you cannot charge it via wifi.

You can use a USB-C to lightning cable if you don't want to use an adapter

No more glowing logo. No more extension cord with a multi-thousand dollar laptop. No more control over when my computer boots up.

And now, no more startup chime.

It's official. Apple is dead to me.

Tim Cook, please resign. If you really care about the survival of the magic and heart and soul of the Apple that Steve Jobs created, you need to resign. You are killing everything that ever made Apple special.

I disagree. The 2016 Pro that I purchased this week (non touch bar) is without question the best computer I have ever owned. By such a longshot it amazes me. Hardware and software. And I have had many, many, many, macs over the years. It's just brilliant. They probably got rid of the glowing logo because of thinness or just for aesthetics, I really don't mind the chrome version. As for the extension cable, it is what it is, I have so many of those lying around that are brand new that I haven't used.

Think about what the MacBook Pro is trying to compete against: the SurfaceBook or XPS 13/15. If you look at the configurations, even for the XPS 13/15, they're in the same price range for comparable features.

Let's start with the SurfaceBook

SurfaceBook (128GB SSD i5) $1499 vs. $1299 2015 Old MacBook Pro (Haswell CPU 128GB SSD i5)
SurfaceBook (128GB SSD i5) $1499 vs. $1499 New MacBook Pro (No Touch Bar w/ 256GB SSD i5)
SurfaceBook (256GB SSD i5) $1699 vs $1799 New MacBook Pro ( Touch Bar w/ 256GB SDD i5)
SurfaceBook (512GB SSD i5) $1999 vs. $1999 New MacBook Pro(Touch Bar w/ 512GB SSD i5)

So, unless you absolutely need pen input, the two are very comparable in terms of price and specs. For the 13" it basically comes down to: do you need/want a detachable screen with pen input? If the answer is 'yes' then you either need to get an iPad Pro or save the money and get a SurfaceBook. But honestly, what 'killer app' uses pen input on Windows 10? All of the best pen input apps are on iOS. But, let's keep going...

SurfaceBook (256GB SSD i7 nVidia dGPU) $2099 vs. $2099 New MackBook Pro (Touch Bar w/ 2516GB SSD i7)

So now, it becomes a little more interesting. For the same price you get a dGPU and pen input. I could see why people might want the dGPU. So now, if you want a dGPU we gotta compare the 15" new MacBook Pro.

I could keep going, but my point being: If you actually compare the computers spec for spec and price for price they're actually very comparable, especially for price. The MacBook Pro is NOT for your 'average' consumer. Just as the SurfaceBook is not priced for your average consumer. Sure, people might still buy it, but chances are the average consumer is going to spend $500 on an Asus/Acer/HP/Dell.

It's like saying the SurfaceBook is a 'niche product' which it currently is. Sure, Microsoft is selling a bunch of SurfaceBooks and its a successful product, just as successful as the MacBook Pro is.

Edit: Ironically, this is where the iPhone and iPad come into play. For that kind of money, someone could buy an iPad. The iPad is the 'cheap' or 'inexpensive' Mac experience. Why get a computer when you can just get a Mac instead? For the average person, that's enough. Apple's answer for the 'average person' is the iPad & iPhone!

So much resistance to change in this thread... especially for something and minuscule as the chime.

So, this is the first Mac without the "charm", eh "chime".

IF Apple will make a new iMac / Mac mini / Mac Pro the charm, sorry.... chime will be gone there too.

It's like Apple saying good bye to us a little bit every time you read one of these stories. :(

Oh well... but a non-Apple desktop is still too far away for me. I am waiting (ever so patiently) for a new iMac.

It's mainly because of the extra-loud chime after a PRAM reset that I'm glad the chime is gone. It always wakes up my girlfriend when I do it late at night. Though I do hope they added some sort of visual cue for the timing on an PRAM reset.

Lol, how often do you have to reset the PRAM?

Apparently they had to remove it because of the immense drain on the battery it caused.

Or perhaps there wasn't enough space for it.

Wish they'd remove the caps lock key. That thing is ridiculously useless.

Actually, I hope they don't. It's how I capitalize all my letters. When learning to type, I was always taught to use the shift + letter but absolutely hated it. Could never get it. Finally figured out that caps lock worked so much better. Not being sarcastic either. It would be absolutely devastating to how I type.

It's not "resistance to change" but rather the whole gamut of changes Apple has been doing as of late with no obvious good reasons...for consumers at least.

I USE IT ALL THE TIME...they should remove the Shift button too. We can just long press or use Force Touch to get capital letters and other characters...;)

Can't blame Apple users after they've been given the shaft by having removable RAM, removable batteries, SD card slots, USB ports, ethernet ports, thunderbolt ports, headphone jacks, matte screens, etc. all taken away from them.

No, the chime isn't a big deal... but it's just more evidence that Apple isn't doing sh*t for innovation but instead neutering their computers and calling it 'innovation' then jacking up the price to extortionate rates.

Maybe they removed the sound so it could save battery life.
After all, the iPhones don't have a chime boot up sound, and aren't those devices great on the battery?!

No, what's dead is this forum. For years people have complained about that useless and annoying chime. Now Apple removes it, and everyone complains.

The more that people winge on this forum, the more confident I am that Apple is doing the right thing.

Please outline exactly how the chime was good for consumers, and how the consumer is going to be negatively affected without it.

As much as these things were great, all good things come to an end. Did you really expect the glowing Apple logo and a chime to be present in every macbook forever? They were cool things, but really guys, it's not the end of the world.

They were iconic, like the Disney castle intro or 20th Century fox jingle.
Being able to widely recognise a brand and quality from short sounds or images is a powerful marketing tool.

As the no bell prize winner said...

"The chimes they are a-changin'", "Chimes of freedom"

This should have got more likes. :p

So you often need to open your laptop but leave it powered off? Is there ever a good reason for that?

Other than cleaning it?

Of course you could always just go the reverse route and power it off then clean it before you shut the lid, so not the end of the world.

As for the chime, good, about bloody time. I hated that bugger blasting out when I rebooted and forgot I had the volume up full blast. Need never worry about that again, wish they'd done it years ago so I could not think about one more thing ;)

It may well have been a part of the Macs character to some but really, with the speed of boot up times these days all it's doing is delaying the process for an extra 2 seconds. Save up all those extra 2 seconds for a few years and take a day off :D

Oh sure. Most definitely you'll abandon the Mac for a windows machine. I can only imagine the moaning and groaning that move will produce. If anyone here who threatens to abandon the mac because the apple logo no longer shines into the night, etc, I'll eat my hat and post a youtube video of it.

Really? Well I didn't really care much, but that's worth seeing, so. I'm sick of Apple taking away my little nightlight, now I'll stub my toe when I get up in the middle of the night. Totally unacceptable, I'm abandoning my Mac and switching to a surface book, a move that's long overdue!

Don't forget to post the link, I look forward to seeing your new high fibre diet :D
