I loved that sound on my Performa. Granted it sounded as if you were ascending mythical heaven, but it was pleasant and relaxing.

I didn't see any comment about this yet ... but the startup chime is, IMO, rather useful as part of the PRAM reset process. You're told to hold down the key sequence at power-up until you hear the chime sound twice, to confirm it completed.

With no chime, how is this going to work? Do we at least get a green power LED blinking twice to look for or anything?

Mind = blown

That's a valid argument! Did not think aboot that.

I'm a very new Mac customer, as I bought my first Apple computer last February (13-inch rMBP). And I absolutely love this thing. Glad I switched from Windows (which I unfortunately still have to use as I'm a Network Engineering student).

Honestly I can totally understand the 'whining' from many people here. I mean, I turned that chiming sound of the moment I set my Mac up. But that's not the point: like some were mentioning, Apple has now removed things that were introduced under Steve Jobs' leadership. It's sad to see it all go. Whether we need it or not, it's just sad.

I'm particularly disappointed that they removed the MagSafe connector, which was very handy and really considered an Apple invention. And the loss of the glowing Apple logo is also a sad thing. I do realise that some changes are for the sake of progress, but I just don't like the new direction Apple is going in.

For the past years I've defended Tim's decisions, but I think it's time to accept that the Apple of Steve Jobs is now completely gone. And I can't defend that, sorry.

To those complaining that the chime was "insipid", "annoying" or any of the other bizarre adjectives; there are several ways of disabling it if you don't like it.

People have a right to be genuinely upset - the chime is a part of the Macintosh identity and it adds an extra dimension to the user experience. In effect, it gives the device a personality.

A part of me hopes that its removal is to make way for a new chime in the future, but this seems unlikely given Apple wasted several opportunities at their 'hello again' event. I'm very sad.

ascending mythical heavens was windows' theme imo
Really? I never saw it like that. I always saw or rather heard Apple's startup sound as a breath of relief and feel like you've ascended into the clouds. Though, to be fair, the Windows sound has changed numerous times. The Windows 10 one is the cleanest one of them all and not cheesy. Apple's was iconic.

No more glowing logo. No more extension cord with a multi-thousand dollar laptop. No more control over when my computer boots up.

And now, no more startup chime.

It's official. Apple is dead to me.

Tim Cook, please resign. If you really care about the survival of the magic and heart and soul of the Apple that Steve Jobs created, you need to resign. You are killing everything that ever made Apple special.

Spot on. However it's too late. The new MBP's. It's not about a lack of a chime, or a cable, or the design. It's the $500 price increase. Tim is playing with fire in the Enterprise. Deep Enterprise price cuts will required to keep the adoption rate on a positive growth rate. If companies move more toward the new Redmond offerings it will disrupt Apple's Budding Services Sector. That could a much larger concern than iPhone sales.

You'll notice the MBP without the Bar has MUCH slower Memory. A feature shared with the 32g iPhone 7 versus the 128g, and 256g. This is the new trend to steer customers into hardware with higher margins. So Tim can continue to serve his shareholders, not the customers. I have a Rob Zombie quote for Tim. "Bow down before the one you serve. Your going to get what you deserve." :apple:

Actually the first positive thing I read about this laptop. I always wanted to get rid of that sound on my iMac. If you had the volume too high when you turned it off, it would chime the pants off you.

Apple has no soul now..... rolls royce will never remove the flying spur or nike its wave or cocacola change its color. There are some things that should never change

Reminds me of Pepsi changing logos and colours. Didnt Sculley work for Pepsi before he almost ruined Apple? Speaking of Skulley he reminds me of Tim somehow...

For crying out loud, what a lot of whinging over a few small changes?

The modern world is full of, and driven by change - my company frequently states that 'no change is not an option'.

My punt is that 99% of negative comments are from folks who've not even seen a new MBP.

I've not seen one yet I've ordered one, an upgrade to my mid-2012 MPB, confident it will do the job. All this moaning is a flash in the pan and in weeks to come, people will be singing the praises of the latest iteration of a wonderful machine!

There are bigger things in the world than a chime ....

When Coca Cola changed its taste millions of people protested. Almost all things in live change. Some do not.

I'm sick of people saying Tim is all about shareholders, how many of you watched his all things d interview about Steve recruiting him to Apple???

Tim has done a fantastic job at Apple since Steves passing.

He had made the iPhone way better, the iPad and the mac seamlessly integrating with iOS and the cloud, the new MBP's are gorgeous but a lot of users here seem to wear rose tinted glasses and bitch about everything, do like I have done and try products from the other side Microsoft, Dell, Samsung, Google and maybe you will realise what great products they still are, and by the way the fact you can now charge your laptop from either side and use just one cable to extend / charge from external monitor in my opinion makes removing MagSafe make sense.

Be careful what you wish for, Tim is doing a great job at Apple, but you just want to compare him to Steve, which is like comparing Apples and Oranges.

Love your sarcasm.

I loved the little breathing sleep light :)
With the 20% Brexit price increase, this weekend I've decided to keep my old MacBook and buy a Pinarello mountain bike instead. I will not pay a @0% increase - that's corporate greed. So ALL Apple purchases are off the card for me.
Still love my old MacBook and it's got a glowing light and lil breathing light too :) :) :) and MagSafe :)
You are doing something exactly the same as I do. I also have no plan to buy new MacBook, even though AU price is not too significant between before and after.

MagSafe is a huge shame indeed. So many times I kick off the power cord by accident. Without MagSafe, I may have already used a dead computer right now.
