Here's a per capita ranking of states with the most current cases:

California didn't make that list, but that's not reason for me to celebrate. It's a big state with lots of population centers. Things could be close to getting out of hand for us up here in Silicon Valley and the numbers are just being diluted by all the people in Southern California who aren't as far along.

Do you think compulsory testing for all citizens is likely?

There no way we're going to have enough testing capacity to do that anytime soon. Any kind of supplies we need is also going to be needed by the rest of the world.

Not at all. It's non compulsory for many other - and even worse - stuff.
I think most of the testing is to try and help track down/ isolate anyone who's been in contact. At this point tracing everyone's not happening, it'll be far more widespread than the 'official' tally shows, and spreading unseen through the population. If you want to 'stop it', now's the time for blunt instrument quarantining of everyone, not targeted or selective screening and isolation.

Yeah, but that's just reflecting that we're finally getting more than a light trickle of testing done. I guess we're now up to a strong trickle. Anyway, I know you know that... just commenting for people reading.

I do get the feeling that public health officials here in Silicon Valley have reached the point of just waiting for the other shoe to drop. The City of San Jose already had to take 10% of its fire department offline for a while due to positive infections and quarantine.

Ah gotcha. My apologies for the overreaction.
Yea at CVS last night for the first time there was a sign they didn't have testing yet. So a good sign it is being rolled out more.

Reports from the hospital indicate Quest Diagnostics (a large, private laboratory) has a COVID19 test available. As of right now, the limiting factor for many facilities is the lack of swabs.

A email from REI stores...closing until the the 27th of march.

REI co-op

To our Co-op Community:

As the coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak continues to spread throughout the communities where we all live and work, we have consistently looked for ways to help protect the health and safety of our employees and customers. Since our founding, REI has been about doing the right thing for our community.

After a great deal of careful consideration, we are temporarily closing our 162 retail stores nationwide starting tomorrow, March 16, until March 27. I believe that is the right thing for our community. In fact, I believe it is our duty—to do all we can to help keep one another safe in this unprecedented moment.

That also means all employees from these stores will be paid during this temporary closure. And, even with our stores closed, we will be working hard to do everything we can to continue to serve our customers. All orders through REI.com will get free shipping while our stores are closed. Customers who have questions about gear and local outdoor activities that they’d normally ask in our stores can get answers through our digital community, REI Conversations. Co-op Journal will feature articles that help people find ways to get outside even during these challenging times.

We’ve always been deliberate and transparent when making significant decisions about our business. This is a difficult decision for any business, and I do not make it lightly. Our decisions are grounded in the belief that there are more important things than business right now—we owe that to one another.

Know that we will continue to work closely with our teams and public health officials throughout the country to understand how to best serve your needs, and serve our customers as soon as local conditions allow. We’ll continue to share information with our members and employees as we move forward together into a future that’s hard to predict.

In the meantime, thank you for your understanding, your patience and, most of all, for being a part of this incredible community. The outdoors remains a vital part of all our lives, especially in moments like this.

Be well and take care of one another.

My best,

Eric Artz

With all the state-level bans and stores closing voluntarily I wonder if/when the US gets a nationwide lockdown.

Also don’t see this ending magically April 1.

That is a ton of negative cases. This is a big reason why a number of medical firms are recommending people stay home instead of going to the emergency room.

Ideally we should be able to test anyone and everyone and I believe within 2 months we should be able to. At some point, it will become SOP at the Hospital to put ill patients through a COVID19 screen

I started wearing disposable plastic gloves when using ATM & fuel pumps. Also avoiding fast food and restaurants . Not sure if i am overreacting.

the idea is to flatten the curve as much as possible. we can't really afford to stay home and we can't afford to let the virus spread . it's getting crazy with people getting stabbed over cases of water.

My god, if this was a virus as lethal as in the film "Contagion" (not downplaying Covid-19) or we had an alien invasion we would be ****ed.

the current level of panic is worse thing.

I don't really see any "panic" and I don't see any reporting that's "hyping" things - the news seems to be repeating and/or actually having subject matter experts on to address the situation, there's some outliers, and certainly some silly things like the run on TP, but I've been watching various communication channels, and people seemed to be spreading [what we know as] factual information, staying isolated, being cautious, aware, concerned and pretty reasonable.

Heck, there's more chaos during a hurricane in this neck of the woods :)

I see people buying excessive goods which might be appropriate for something like a hurricane or a natural disaster, but I’ve seen no panic either while acknowledging there have been fights over consumer goods without witnessing any in person.

Honestly, if it were as deadly it would probably be easier to isolate. The problem is healthy people are walking around shedding this thing.
Yea problem is they could just be "healthy" and still be carrying.

I've yet to actually see any fights or even these huge lines people post, but I sure as heck see how bare shelves are.

But even when "blizzards" are coming here, it's just the French toast items that are hoarded, not the entire store.
