If you are holding Ipad over your head for reading books or magazine then you should just get yourself an ebook reader or cheap kindle fire especially for that. Then keep the Ipad. You wont realize it now but once you change from Big screen retina to smaller 7 inch tablet then you will know how uncomfortable it would be.

Ummmm, I own a Nexus 7. I know what the difference in screen size is, so to check email, browse the web and run a few apps, 7" is fine. 7.85" will be even better.

So if I've got a ipad3 let and get the mini, can they use the same data plan?

Or do I have to get two 15 dollar plans?....I only need one.....I think...

nope, no need at all for a mini especially one with no retina display. Ok retina display really isn't a big deal (to me) but I seriously thought a nice 'wow' factor next to a new ipad 4 for it would be retina instead of being a mini ipad 2...whatever.

If i need any use for something smaller my iphone does the job.

Yep I'm all in for the mini iPad and am perfectly good to go with its spec. I'll get the retina display sometime later when they refresh it but I'm after that size of tablet. I'm staying awake for the pre-order on Friday! I wouldn't be sad if they moved the start time a little earlier, too, but I'm trying to tell myself once again it will be exciting  to be up at three a.m. for a pre-launch order fest. God I'm yawning just thinking about it. I will need to make some coffee for sure.

Nope, not a need for an iPad Mini. If I had sold my iPad, I wouldn't even buy the mini because it lacks Retina display. I would personally cross paths and purchase a Kindle Fire HD.

Why would I be? There is nothing that runs on retina that won't run on the mini. It wont look as sharp, but it doesn't look bad either.

Um, yes it does. Reading books on non retina sucks, especially once you get "spoiled" by a crisp text on retina iPad. Reading PDFs on non-retina - forget about it. I will never ever go back to a non retina tablet.

I am in an interesting situation where the iPad Mini sounds pretty fantastic. I just gave up my iphone to help pay my student loan debt and my iPad 1 is feeling heavier and more sluggish by the day. I also am using a 5 year old iPod video. So an iPad mini with 4G and at least 32 gb would basically replace 3 devices for me. Although the wiser by would likely be to hold off on the 4G since I would only use the data 2 months out of the year when I travel for work. So. Tempting.

I might buy the LTE one when it comes out, and drop the LTE on the iPad 3... we'll see. By that time, I'll have had a chance to check out the wifi version in stores.

i'm keeping my ipad 3rd gen (32gb wifi) for the time being but there's a good chance i'll be getting my wife the mini. i probably won't purchase another ipad for myself until 2014 :confused:

I'm on the fence. I have an iPad 2 (which I don't actually use that much unless I'm traveling lately) and a Kindle PaperWhite on which I now do all of my reading. The iPad 2 was fine for me (speed and performance-wise), and the iPad 3 seemed too incremental an upgrade back in March.

The iPad mini is really intriguing, but I'd like to hold one and 'experience it' before committing. But for just $170 more, I get the iPad 4, which is a vast spec upgrade over the iPad 2 (and, sadly for many iPad 3 owners, the iPad 3 as well).

If the entry level mini were $249 or so, this would be a no brainer -- I'd sell the 2, experiment with the mini, and then upgrade to a 4 if the mini didn't meet my needs. But at $329, with the iPad 4 at $499, it's a tougher choice.

Basically, I'm being asked if I want to trade in my iPad 2 for a smaller one. Still not sure. But either way, I will probably order 2-3 minis as gifts.

If only that 7.85 tablet wasn't a complete waste of money running 2 year old screen and processor tech.

Nope. Getting a 1st gen device from apple is the stupidest decision one can make.

I do like the smaller form factor, it is more convenient to use. Im really not sure, but I'll probably end up buying it after seeing it at the store.

Nope..

Nope I'm happy with my Ipad3 as long it's working, downloading, and going to the Internet it will be with me never will buy an Ipad again unless a bump in storage and a new color aside from the black or white will come out other than that Ipad 3 is for me:D

I have the same Ipad specs as OP. I really want to WANT the mini but the lack of retina display is really holding me back. and an apple geek told me they think the retina display will come out in 6 months so I'm def waiting.

Be sure to blame them in 6 months when they're wrong and a retina one doesn't come out.

I love my ipad 3 but it is too big to take wit me wherever I go. This is why I will get the mini. Going to get the 32gb Verizon version for myself and get my mom a white 16gb and my dad a black 16 gb for Xmas.

I'm going to wait a couple of months to see how many things are wrong with it first. I like the idea of the larger 7 inch screen!

Well I love my iPad 3 but this has me interested. The only downgrade is the screen and that might not even be that big of a deal. Yes the processor is the newer a5 that was put in the 2012 ipad 2 and it has 512mb of ram. The thing is it doesn't have to push a retina screen. In a lot of cases the iPad 2 is a little faster then the iPad 3. It's very light, more portable, faster, better camera, probably better wifi, what seems to look like stereo speakers and same 10 hours of battery time. All in all it actually seems better then the iPad 3.

Yes.

It's should have been 7"+ from the start, it's one of Jobs decision I disagreed with.

I love the iPad but it's a PITA to take with you. I only bought it for the Retina but I got over that pretty quickly so I will likely sell with the LTE Mini's come out. I'm hoping I can to a straight exchange for a 64GB. :D

Nope.

I would be reallllly tempted to ditch my ipad 3 and go for a ipad mini IF it had retina display, but I'm not a fan of the fact that its basically two generations behind :/

Oh so.... what, you think the mini spec can't handle fetching and sending mail, reading books, playing a movie, playing music, grabbing some news headlines and the weather? Taking some notes? A round of Sudoku? What do you think most people are going to do with an iPad mini, manage logistics for the Tenth Mountain Division on its next adventures?

Ordinary people buy computers for pretty ordinary purposes. I had an old Powerbook 170 that I used for text processing in bright sun in the backyard until a couple years ago. I think it went obsolete in 1991. I used it last around 2005 I believe. Nice active matrix screen worked great in the sunshine... Think the thing had a 2400bps modem, 8MB (yeah, meg) RAM and a 40MB hard drive or something like that. But it was fine for the tasks it was assigned. I think the text processor launched in 20k RAM. I loved that I could still use that in the 21st century. Now that thing went obsolete about six months after i bought it. Did not faze me in the least.

So get real. Let people decide what they want of their tablets and plan their purchases accordingly.

(So now go ahead and run the 10tn Mtn Div's logistics. For that I'd probably get the larger iPad as well ;) )
