go price a fully tricked out Dell or HP with a 3 year warranty and then compare it to the price of a 15" MBP with the good graphics option.

Dell/HP is around $1200 and MBP is $2400 with tax and Applecare included. with Dell/HP you will get a modern i5 or i7 CPU and a much better discrete graphics card. with HP it's a card with 1GB graphics RAM. and you get an HDMI port with no special adapaters required to watch HULU or blu-ray on your TV

i don't mind paying $200 in premium for a MBP, but at current prices it's just ridiculous

For the record I bought an HP with 4 gig of RAM, 17.3" screen, NVIDIA graphics card, half gig HD (7200 RPM) and an i5 processor for $899 last weekend. All the ports are cool, particularly the HDMI. The fit and finish of the hardware, particularly the feel of the keyboard is certainly a few notches below Apple. I got slightly irritated a couple days ago when using this thing in bed because the keyboard doesn't light up and I wasn't used to wear some of the keys were (such as pg up/pg dn).

Why is apple doing this to us? I'm serious, why do they play with us this like this?

Is there still a chance they will update them at 10 o clock PST?:(

Lesq, rockaz and alent:

thanks for the info. I guess I'm gonna wait and see what happens with the MBP. I appreciate all your input.

i'm typing this on a HP Compaq 8510p laptop. the LCD had to be replaced once. HP said it was my fault and my employer agreed to pay the $500 even though there was a 3 year warranty included with the laptop. it cost $1500 almost 3 years ago. now the replaced LCD is acting up again. took almost a month to get the LCD replaced last time because it had to be sent to the depot and there was a hurricane, etc.

reading the forums here it sounds like a MBP will be less of a headache, but i wouldn't pay the current premium for one.

alent1234: thanks for your input. I'll take it all into consideration. Only thing is.. I know I'm gonna pay more for a MBP but I'm willing to pay more for less headaches. I've had too many problems with my dell and hp.

I am pretty set on the MBP. Should I wait it out? would price jump with new processor? Thanks again

i've been using computers since the 1990's. price never goes up with new models, always down.

i've used Dell, HP and other brands along the way as well as built my own. biggest advantage of Apple is no crapware. i have an old Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop that i gave my inlaws and my mom has one as well. both are going strong, but it was insane out of the box. 20 different programs starting up on boot up flashing buy me. in both cases i had to blow away everything on the system and install the OS and everything from scratch.

alent1234: that's exactly the type of BS I've been putting up with for years with my PC laptops. I've had enough! It's time for a Mac. So, is this new processor release imminent?

Anyone ideas how long I should wait? or does it not matter = just wait it out 'til they put the new processor in there? (it's just too costly right now for the current processor)?

Glad I found this thread!

Too bad you didn't get the sweet pop-up light like my HP laptop has.

Yes, absolutely you should wait until Apple announces updates to the MacBook Pro line before buying (hopefully soon).

Sorry if someone already mentioned this... LOL to not blurring out the store info you are from.

Just wait. I think there should be updates the latest in June, maybe late May.
I am using a Sony Vaio laptop, which is now around 2 years old and I hate it:
Display not working in some positions, battery down in 15min. I am more than ready for a MBP.

JUNE OR MAY!?

Alright,

looks like I'm gonna try wait it out.. hopefully not 'til June! (need new laptop badly)

Thanks for all your input and help... you just saved me from making a costly mistake.

Thanks to alent1234, LesQ and rockaz!!! Much appreciated

I am about to replace my MBP which is over 3 years old and...never had an issue with it. But I need processing power so this one will be up for sell as soon as new one will come out.
Regarding to buy now or wait...of course WAIT. It will be very soon and current MBP which is on sale now will drop 20% in price. I remember when I have started with Macs and bought PowerBook and then seen it upgraded 2 weeks after that. The I have realized how stupid I was.
Don't repeat someone else mistakes.

ipoppy: I will not repeat those mistakes. I am now intent on waiting for new MBP's thanks to all the good advice I've received here.

Thank God for this thread. I literally stumbled upon it this morning!!!

Intel has been producing the i5 and i7 CPU's for months now. the way it works is they start producing them in Oregon and once they work out the kinks in the process they replicate it in their other fabs around the world. as they replicate the process, the fabs around the world will stop producing c2d and will switch to the core i5 and i7.

difference is that c2d CPU's have 45 nanometer circuitry and i core CPU's are intel's new 32nm circuits. i remember the days when tech rags would run stories about how it was impossible to make CPU's with circuits smaller than 90 nanometers.

HP, Dell, Acer, Toshiba and other PC makers are already shipping systems based on these new CPU's and new graphics chips at lower prices than Apple is selling MBP's for.

can't tell you when new MBP's come out, but at current prices you are paying a huge premium for what is essentially wal mart clearance hardware. at least for the CPU and graphics.

Do not buy now. Major updates are on the way. My guess is by the end of the month - at the latest. Good things come to those that wait...

Check out the Buyer's Guide...

stoneman and alent: Thanks for all your help.

That buyersguide makes it clear. I will wait it out. And to think, I almost purchased one last night! I feel very lucky to have found this thread!

aperture 3? really?! that's the rumored MBP update?

anyway, what a tease! like many others here, i really need to upgrade my aging, 2-year old MBP.

may/june is highly unlikely - way off their typical update schedule.

More time to dream

I was recently allowing myself to consider moving back to windows 7 based on descent user reports and the cheaper priced windows offerings. But you know what? "Cheaper" is the word which applies. Not in price as we all know, but everything else. I'm writing this on a 2006 17" Macbook pro which I dropped-checked hard last month due to external keyboard cord wrapped around my stupid leg. The screen framing is all bent to heck and now it won't close all the way, but guess what? It works as well as the day I bought it. Most importantly, I LOVE this operating system!! I can't leave it! I'll wait and use the time to dream a little more. Here's what I see at night after the sheep:

17-19 inch Macbook Pro
Anti-glare screen
Intel Core i7 620 2.26
8 GB DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce® GTS 360M discrete graphics (1GB DDR5)
1TB HDD at 7200 RPM
HDMI
USB 3
Blu-ray
$2400.00

Remember, it's just a dream.........zzzzzzz
