I bought an ipod touch just after christmas, and I have firmware 1.1.2 jailbroken, with all the 5 iphone apps installed plus iPhysics (which is awesome) and gpSPhone (gameboy advance emulator). Now, I could just upgrade to 1.1.3 and give up jailbreak, BUT in my country... THERE IS NO ITUNES STORE !! so how the hell would I be able to get the 5 apps (of which i frequently use mail) ? So yes, apple HAS made a bad move. They SHOULD be free. It's jailbreak all the way for me.

It's the nature of technology. Prices drop, devices get faster and have more memory, features are added. Any tech you buy today will probably be either cheaper or obsolete within a month.

For those who got them for Christmas, you've had the iPod Touch for over 20 days, has it brought you more than $1 a day's worth of pleasure from using it? If you had had to wait until now to get it, would you have paid $20 more to get it at Christmas?

Effectively new buyers got a $20 price cut today. But they are forced to spend that $20 on the Application suite. If you wouldn't have been mad at a $20 price cut you shouldn't be outraged about being charged for added functionality.

Yes, I would have waited had I known about this. I bought two touches at christmas -- one for me and one as a gift. I wouldn't be upset with a $20 price cut. Yes. I am outraged that I have to pay $20 for the additional functionality.

So, I'l box them back up, return them and then buy new ones. I'll probably end up spending way more than $40 in gas and time. It is the principle of the thing.

Then how do you go about buying any technology? Tech advances, prices drop and features get added all the time. If you wanted features that are not present when you buy, you shouldn't buy. It's only a matter of time before the features are going to be added to the product you want or a competitors product.

You may want to be sure that, since they are open box, that you won't get hit with a restocking fee that could very easily negate/exceed the $20 you would pay for the apps.

I'm a big boy, I understand all that. I don't mind paying for software. I write software for a living and our company charges for updates and new features. I bought a mini (long ago) and guess what came out? The nano? I liked it. Guess what I bought? Guess what came out next and guess what I bought? I bought an iMac. I used it for a long time. Guess what came out? A new iMac. I knew Leopoard was coming out. I waited. I bought it. I liked it.

Had all of this happened in 3-4 months, I would have happily paid the $20 because the home screen cusomtization and web clips look good for me. I feel this is a crappy move just after the Christmas sales rush.

So they should have waited longer after Xmas? If they had done this on February 15th, what do you do about everyone who bought one in January?

There is no good time to update anything if you're trying not to piss people off because no matter what, when you update/price cut/add features someone bought it just outside of the return window and is now going to be pissed that they could have waited just a few days and gotten something better.

It could have just as easily been a hardware upgrade and price cut, now you'd have obsolete hardware with missing features for more money... at least this way for $20 you can have exactly the same thing as someone who buys today, and you got to play with it for nearly a month while they didn't have one.

Ok guy, thanks for defending Apple. You can be quiet now. Good job.

Nice, constructive...

It has nothing to do with defending Apple or any other corporate entity. The sense of entitlement that people seem to have these days tends to irk me. If you can't tell yourself, "I'll be happy with this purchase next week, even if they make a newer/faster/better version by then", you probably shouldn't be buying.

Just want to add something else.

The existing owners should NOT[/b[ be charged, because if we hadn't all bought it, and had waited until after Macworld to see, they probably wouldn't have updated it! They may have, but they would see that nobody is interested in it. Surely the people that bought one straight away are the true Apple supporters.

People are going to complain no matter what. No matter what.

The idiots in this scenario are the people that try to reason/wonder why they are complaining. They will be over it after a few hours of sleep. Let it go.

Exactly. There's no store in here either, not that I would pay for that kind of an update. What are we supposed to do?

Also, people were pissed about the iPhone's price drop. Apple finally settled with the $100 credit. Let's hope Apple understands what load of crap they have put together again.

Sometimes I just enjoy being an idiot and have fun in the debate... It's why probably more than half of my posts on this site are in the PRSI forum, and Console games...

I'd do it more at home but I'd rather sleep in the bed than on the couch, and my daughter who can talk usually ends all debates with "You're not my friend, dad!"

I don't believe I'm entitled to anything -- in an sense of the term. Apple is free to do what every they please. Just because Apple is allowed to do something doesn't mean consumers have to like it. You can have your opinion. Others can be dissatisfied with Apple's choice and have their opinion. I'm personally irked by people who simply defend Apple's every move.

I think my main issue is how I read these posts saying that Apple should be giving the apps away for free. I don't see any obligation moral or otherwise for Apple to have to give these apps away for free. Just like they had no obligation to give the $100 iPhone credit that they did.

I was shocked that they are not free, I do think that $20 is a bit steep, and I'd like to see them offered individually for $2-$5 apiece. It would have been better publicity to give them away for free, but it's up to Apple to decide when and how to sacrifice corporate image for profit and vice versa.

Apple is out to make money. I like their products but I'm not under any delusions that they won't take every opportunity they can to take my money.

Sure is sucks that the apps are not free, but I don't see any obligation on Apple's part for them to be free.

It's ONLY $20!!!!! What is wrong with you people. You'll spend that on a couple of mochafrappucinos at Starbucks. All that new software for less than 5% of the original purchase price. Whatta bunch of whiners. If you can afford $400 for an iPod, what's all the griping about $20 that extends its usefulness 10-fold? Geez! Or did your mommy and daddy buy you the iPod?

People like this make Apple think this is O.K. It's not that we can't afford it, we just shouldn't have to pay for it. Just like the $100.00 rebate for all the original iPhone purchasers. Apple heard about it enough and "fixed" the problem. Of course, they give you a Apple Store credit, so they get your money either way....

Very similar to what I think -- except I believe APPL should have just released these for free to existing customer or made the app pack/features available to new customers for the same fee. I'm glad APPL is developing new features for the Netwon, I'm mean iPod. I just believe they could have handled this better -- this should have never, ever been an issue. We should have all just been gushing over the next big/thin thing.

you know its funny when people say they would pay 2-5 bucks for these apps but if im not mistaken people were still whinning and crying about having to pay 2 bucks for the 8021n feature Get a life either dont buy it or buy it plain and simple

Customer service departments need more employees like you.

LOL

Not sure if you were sarcastic or serious... funny either way :D

I'll be here all week. Don't forget to tip your waiters and waitresses.

Regardless of where you stand on this specific instance ($20 for the apps, web clips and hsc) people should consider one thing. Have we hit the slippery slope where every new application, missing feature, bug fix or enhancement will require another payment? Is this a test trial to see how customers respond? Is $20, the new nickle and dime?

Everyone sit back and enjoy their Apple flavored juice ...

Bug fixes are, and should always be free.

When iLife came out and started getting bundled with new Macs, Apple didn't give it to people with old Macs regardless of whether or not their hardware was current. New apps, can be free, they can be charged for, who knows what the developers of the apps will decide to do?

Missing features should be free if they were promised when the device was launched, otherwise it's at the discretion of the company whether or not to charge existing users for the feature "upgrade."
