That's all free, its just the new apps which aren't.

Incorrect. I had 1.1.3 (free) and while I had it, I couldn't customize my homescreen, or add bookmarks to the homescreen. Buying the upgrade, of which I have, allows for these features.

'1.1.3 FREE VERSION' contains one update. Having the iPhone dock. The end.

Pay the $20, and be done with it. It's $20 everyone. ¬_¬

It's ONLY $20!!!!! What is wrong with you people. You'll spend that on a couple of mochafrappucinos at Starbucks. All that new software for less than 5% of the original purchase price. Whatta bunch of whiners. If you can afford $400 for an iPod, what's all the griping about $20 that extends its usefulness 10-fold? Geez! Or did your mommy and daddy buy you the iPod?
<retarded emoticon removed>

If I had such generous parents I'd probably be a lot more OK with the charge for. a. software. update.

All I know is I'm sticking to my jailbreaked 1.1.1 :D . I aint payin $20 for something I can get for free, hell I might just donate to the jailbreak team instead -- they could use the money more than Apple.

Customer service departments need more employees like you.

Great joke did you stay up all night thinkin of that but still im saying people say that people say make them 2 bucks or 5 but this just the exact same scenario with the 8021n people still stop whining and get a life

No, it came to me in an instance. I wish people like you would wear a badge that says "charge me extra, I don't mind".

You are the coolest person ever.

The Apple TV and iPhone are sold using a different accounting scheme than the iPod Touch. This was public knowledge at the time the iPod Touch was released - it never applied to the iPod Touch.

This means you got exactly what you paid for. You should have only expected bug and some minor enhancements for free on the Touch. Using some of the logic seen here, all the iPod games should have been free, too.

Buyers of the iPhone and Apple TV will most likely receive new features and applications for up to 24 months, according to the "subscription based accounting" used. Again, this does not apply to the iPod Touch or other iPods.

Meaning exactly what i've been thinking. Apple see iPhone & iPod touch as one platform, for arguements sake, 'Mobile OSX'. Leopard cost you £79 to upgrade and experience it. Welcome to the first of hopefully many mobile OSX charged updates!

At least what they are charging is for is good, solidly written software. I wouldn't be surprised if, from now on, where possible, everything iPhone gets, which iPod touch could use, we will get it, in one of these charged 'packages'.

I just hope by the time the next one comes around, they have revised the system of downloading and syncing the applications to your device (i.e. creating an 'applications' section within your iTunes library (like Games).

Apple - keep em comin' I say.

Indeed. This is very true. People seem to think that because they bought something similar to the iPhone, they deserve everything that the iPhone has for free. I don't see the iPod nano getting free apps? I don't even see it getting signifiant software updates.

Over the past 24 hours, my fire has been watered down about the whole $20 for apps thing. Apple obviously had to do it (because of law) and they wanted people who told them back in August, "I'll pay money for the Mail App!" to be happy. What ever Apple announces, people always complain. Hell, they'll come out with a new iPhone, but everyone who had an iPhone would complain. Apple will come out with a new addition for a car, and people would scream because its not compatible for their car. Just deal with it people, and if you hate Apple so much, go here and shut up already.

Haha, one of the best quotes I've seen since MacWorld.:)
Thank you.

This website works, too.

It seems that they left some stuff out. With the flash animation near the top, they left out a few words:

Since the launch of Windows Vista, people are

Waiting Less for BSODs
More Confident in Crashes
Safer Online (not really) from the world of malware that runs on Windows.

So, why did the have to charge $20?

Why not $2?

People, just get over the $20 thing. All right, you would complain if you didn't have the option of putting them on there without Jailbreaking.
Get in (complain), get out (pay the $20), and get on with your life (eventually "upgrade" back to 1.1.1).:apple:

Gee, I don't know. Maybe because they want money? I have no idea. Maybe they just know that you'll eventually just suck it up and give them $20.

And that's what it boils down to. Apple is taking advantage of early adopters for money.

Or... they're having a nominal cost for a very good upgrade. If you can't live with the fact that hardware and software get updated and you can't always have the best product without having to upgrade, you should stay away from the technology market.

I seem to remember a recent firmware upgrade that cost $2 - people STILL complained.
Haha. Nice point.

No matter what, MFers are gonna complain. I mean seriously I am flabergasted at the sense of entitlement that some people feel. Like has been said*before- you don't have to buy the update. Thanks for the effort, but I don't need some 15 year old kid who just read about Che Gevara in History class to go on some hot-aired anti-capitalist rant on me behalf on*the evils of corporate America (granted they are mainly on a different forum). I paid the 20 bucks, I got more stable firmware and apps. And now I can get (most likely buy) 3rd party apps when they are released. ANd guess what, you don't have to! I'm seriously, are we really shocked that Apple is, gasp, out to make money? That's how they R & D the best computer products that are on the market, and have gained a whopping 10% of the market share. Do I wish it was free? Sure. I wish my iPod was free. IF you don't want to pay, jailbreak it.

Please don't turn into Micro$oft. :(

you should want that... Microsoft never charges for software updates...:p

apple is the only major hardware company in the world that charges their consumers for this kind of stuff. they just make cool enough stuff to blind consumers in their nickle and diming.
