It seems each new flagship becomes the best when it becomes to display mate...don't think people will take it seriously considering this is how they view these displays now.

Here you go, almost all Display Model in Apple store exhibit same issue.

Even after turning on night mode on X, the XS Max is still warmer than my old X....

The screen is just garbage with shift tint as well. Seeing the screen at different angle, the yellow piss is gone. It's very likely not the OLED color calibration issue, but the issue with polarization.
Im willing to bet DisplayMate got a special XS Max phone for testing..........

Another worthless display review. Just look at the dang screen and make up your own mind. Some people have already returned their XS phones due to yellow tint and inherent PMW screen flicker. For those people, the screen scores a F-. For others, the screen looks great and they're fortunate enough not to get eyestrain & headaches from the strobing screen. For those people, the screen scores an A.

My advice: Don't pay any attention to any of these "reviews". Go to a store & play with the thing yourself & make up your own mind. (and don't pre order next time around).
Like with any new releases there will faulty units...happens with every phone.

The “best” display ever says who? Personally it’s nice but it’s duller than an AMOLED and has poor viewing angles before the screen turns blue. It’s not as sharp as Samsung’s Super AMOLED either and the razer phones 1440p 120hz panel is smoother also has better colors better viewing angles and is sharper. There are much better panels on the market the IPhone Xs Max is maybe the 3rd beat panel on a phone . I would have preferred the iPad pros retina motion plus screen instead TBH.

Not surprised, perfect screen as always from Apple.
Well, since the new displays are rated better than last year’s, doesn’t that mean that those weren’t perfect? :p

Fun fact: The smartphone display that DisplayMate mentiones to have had better reflectance was the iPhone 7’s. It also had higher peak brightness. Unfortunately they didn’t test the iPhone 8 but I hope they’ll do so when testing the XR.

Not exactly. They were the best at the time. Technology progresses.

To be fair I think they only give the score to Samsung and Apple.

I’m interested to see where the XS places on Dxo marks ranking list.

This long time Apple user thinks the iPhone Xs Max's screen is dull. Maybe he got the LG screen.

Well he’s been using a note 9 so any non Samsung display will seem dull.

Funny how the anti Apple people get so up in arms about articles like this. They made a great display, just accept it and move on. We don’t need a million excuses.

He's also referring to his iPhone X. The difference is Samsung panels on iPhone X and Note 9 vs LG panel on iPhone Xs Max.

I'd bet Apple sent Displaymate an iPhone Xs Max with the better Samsung panel.

Where is your data to prove your "3rd best" assessment?

"Better colors" and "better viewing" angles is based on your personal experience or data? DisplayMate uses data that is measurable.
It’s 3rd best in my opinion there is nothing special about this display to call it the “best” don’t be a blind isheep the Xs Max is a great phone but calling it “the best” is just ignorant

Here is a quick test for determining if PWM Flicker is present on a display:
https://iristech.co/how-to-test-my-monitor-for-pwm-flicker/
And here is a link to an article explaining why (almost) all OLED phones use some degree of Pulse Wave Modulation (they mention a SINGLE exception and why it doesn't work); how Apple iPhones actually choose a methodology to lessen PWM except in low light situations; how, if you are experiencing the issue, you can set your iPhone to minimize, possibly eliminate, PWM.

There is also a much simpler test offered on this page to view PWM which is a regrettable "feature" of OLEDs (and most screen technology, actually).

Not to trivialize the issue but it seems most people commenting on the subject don't actually understand what is happening here and why. Bring on the MicroLED and let's hope it is not as flaky as OLEDs are proving to be.

Just because someone is critical on a component or decision, doesn’t meant they are anti-Apple

Considering I'm an engineer, I probably do and you don't need to be so smug.

You can say there are millions and millions of good units, but there are also millions and millions of bad units. Probability be damned, reviewers never, and I mean never, not once, in ten years of watching reviews have complained about a single screen. The screens are either hand-picked, or the reviewers are paid off to not say anything negative. Walk into any store and you can find junk display units, so there are probably a lot more bad ones out there than people realize, because the average consumer buying a phone doesn't even think about it or notice it or look for it - doesn't mean it's not there. It's likely just underreported.
According to your source, are these millions of bad displays within tolerance?

That is if you win the display lottery. In night shift, mine is yellow on top (like it should be in night shift) and pink on the bottom. Significant uniformity issue.

I would pay extra if they gave me a display similar to the one they sent to Display Mate to test out!
What have Applecare said about it?

Oh okay, DisplayMate, MacRumors, stop everything. This guy is having an issue so that means everyone must be having that issue and it means DisplayMate lied!

Plus 1 on that. My XS Max has an impeccable display that’s so bright and evenly white it’s actually blinding. Dude has a bad screen and the world must be conspiring against him. Instead of meaning, people need to bring their phones in and have them swapped. All the XS Max I’ve seen or used had the best display ever. Period.

What? So your rebuttal was it's the 3rd best in your opinion and it's "nothing" special" (again with no facts?

Sounds like I'm using facts and you're unable to accept Apple has the best display so you just repeat your opinion and call us iSheep.

There are only Samsung panels for the Xs.

You mean from Samsung, right?
Apple makes Samsung screens for iPhones better than Samsung makes for their own phones. Proven last year too.

Apple is too smart to get into producing capital intensive components for their phones. Using suppliers and forcing them to meet your specifications is a FAR better business model.

Pick and choose suppliers, drop suppliers, squeeze suppliers, etc.

(As seen in Apple's results).

And just when I'm content keeping my 7 Plus, more good news on the XS Max comes out :D I keep telling myself I'll wait until next year... let's hope the temptation doesn't win out. Actually, other than deeper blacks and slightly sharper ppi, is the XS Max display remarkably better than the LCD inside the 7 Plus?

I also have 7 Plus. Just got the Xs Max over the weekend. I don't want to tempt you, but it is one NICE smartphone. The display is also superior to 7 Plus.
