Funny how the anti Apple people get so up in arms about articles like this. They made a great display, just accept it and move on. We don’t need a million excuses.

The display looks great other than the uniformity on mine. I just want a good one for $1,800!

It’s 3rd best in my opinion there is nothing special about this display to call it the “best” don’t be a blind isheep the Xs Max is a great phone but calling it “the best” is just ignorant
Why is it ignorant? It’s their opinion.

Apple makes Samsung screens for iPhones better than Samsung makes for their own phones. Proven last year too.

Apple is too smart to get into producing capital intensive components for their phones. Using suppliers and forcing them to meet your specifications is a FAR better business model.

Pick and choose suppliers, drop suppliers, squeeze suppliers, etc.

(As seen in Apple's results).
Not really proven as Samsung have made their own displays in the S9 plus and note 9 both of which were better than the 2017 X according to DisplayMate.

I have the Max and it's a super good display, no doubt. But at this point as long as it's made by Samsung and is high end, it's hard find any real faults. They're all terrific displays.

So the XS Max shatters previous records....

iPhone XS Max has the best smartphone display ever, according to display testing and calibration firm DisplayMate Technologies.

iphonexsdesign-1.jpg

iPhone XS Max has a number of notable improvements over the original iPhone X, including higher peak brightness and better color accuracy, and matches or sets smartphone display records in a number of areas, according to Dr. Raymond M. Soneira, President of DisplayMate Technologies.

For example, DisplayMate says the iPhone XS Max has a peak full-screen brightness of up to 660 nits for the sRGB and DCI-P3 color gamuts, which improves screen visibility in high ambient lighting conditions. By comparison, the iPhone X achieved a peak full-screen brightness of 634 nits in its year-ago tests.

DisplayMate measured the iPhone XS Max's screen reflectance to be 4.7 percent, close to the lowest that it has ever measured for a smartphone. As a result of this high brightness and low reflectance, the iPhone XS Max has one of the best contrast ratings in high ambient light on any smartphone it has ever tested.

DisplayMate provides an extensive overview of the iPhone XS Max display, concluding that it is a "very impressive top tier smartphone display."Of note, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max use the same display technologies.

DisplayMate's iPhone XS Max OLED Display Technology Shoot-Out article is a worthwhile read for anyone looking for comprehensive analysis and testing of the iPhone XS Max display. DisplayMate has been a provider of display calibration software for consumers and technicians since 1991.

Correct, but the iPhones and Samsungs aren't ever released same day, so we have to consider Apple the best when they are the best available.

You must admit, that it is amazing the XS Max can have a better screen than the Note 9, released literally 1 months ago. Surely, Samsung could make a better screen if they either (or both):

1) Cared about tolerances
2) Could calibrate their displays better through software

I actually believe this is the performance of the average non-defect Xs/Max display. Initially I disliked the yellowish tint on my Xs with night shift disabled, but then I realized it was only at night that it bothered me, and remembered that true tone shifts the color temp based on ambient light. I just tested in my diffuse day-lit office on a pure white test page screen on my Xs, my 8 and my 2015 MBP, and at full brightness the Xs by FAR had the purest white display. 8 was slightly greenish-yellow and MBP (that was originally calibrated) was slightly pink. I also luckily have perfect uniformity from straight on and at shallow angles.

Tonight, when it bugs me again under warm LED lighting I will adjust the warm tint to be cooler as detailed in this MR page https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/tweak-iphone-ipad-true-tone-display/ I'll probably go almost neutral and then will manually activate night shift only when I'll be sleeping soon and want to reduce blue light effects.

I also have 7 Plus. Just got the Xs Max over the weekend. I don't want to tempt you, but it is one NICE smartphone. The display is also superior to 7 Plus.
You’re not making it easier. ;) Are noticing similar real world performance between the two? I’ve watched a few YouTube videos and the performance gains of the XS Max vs the 7 Plus seem very incremental. Camera and Display seem the obvious big jumps forward.

It’s not luck.

Samsung display actually stated that apples oled displays are more expensive and more difficult to manufacture compared to displays for Samsung mobile. In fact yield rate for apples displays used to be 60% while Samsung’s mobile was at 80%.

Looks like the "White Point Color Shift at a 30 degree Viewing Angle" hasn't changed much since the X. This is one thing that bugs me about OLED displays, and it looks like Samsung is ahead of Apple here.
JNCD (lower is better)
iPhone 7 - 0.8
Note 9 - 1.3
XS Max - 2.6
iPhone X - 2.7

Absolute Color accuracy is good enough on all the phones, and it doesn't matter as much if it's off by a bit.

Here you go, almost all Display Model in Apple store exhibit same issue.

Even after turning on night mode on X, the XS Max is still warmer than my old X....

The screen is just garbage with shift tint as well. Seeing the screen at different angle, the yellow piss is gone. It's very likely not the OLED color calibration issue, but the issue with polarization.
Could it be the ambient light sensor not working correctly? I don’t have any issue

Most people seem to not like True Tone and turn it off. I think everyone would rather have 120 Hz like on the iPad Pros.

How is that have anything to do with ambient light sensor?

I have true tone, night mode, everything off including auto brightness.

The color shift back to normal if I look at it from different angle. Demo unit in Apple store exhibit same issue.

I guess they are making them to their own preferences and maybe they feel that having the ability to change the screen mode in the settings is good enough.

It’s impressive that Apple can be one of the top players in the screen department when they haven’t had a class leading display since the days of the 4 and 4S. They’ve caught up in a big way.

I'm starting to think DispayMate is about as equally as Apple when they say "This display has the best display"

Exactly, because Samsung accepts crap and ships it.

The display is amazing indeed. But my 6S seems brighter at peak brightness compared to my Xs. I hope I don't have a defective display. Most likely not.

The 6S has 550 nits which is lower than Xs

Lol, no offense- but that comment is absolutely rooted in ignorance!

It’s as silly as claiming that any camera w/ a higher megapixel count MUST be better than one w/ a lower megapixel count... no matter what; or that any processor w/ a higher clock speed MUST be better than one w/ a lower clock speed... no matter what.

This antiquated way of thinking is like 20 years outdated by now & the fact that there are people that still think like this is astounding to me!

You are clearly basing your bold assumptive claim on a single spec (resolution).
I do not believe for a second that you’ve even seen this unreleased phone in person; much less performed a scientific side by side analysis vs an 8 Plus- thus you are definitively unqualified to purport your completely unfounded opinion as fact.

So Apple's new display is so amazing it makes 720p videos look better than 1080p videos did on a display that was best in class just 1 year ago?

If that's true they should have spent 20 minutes at the keynote explaining how this legitimately revolutionary technology works.
