A significantly lighter unit with a much shorter battery life would be fine with me. 5 hours is more than enough for what I need.

I wonder what proportion of ipad owners really need 8/9 hours battery life?

Honestly reading this you would think that the new iPad is about 5kg heavier than the iPad 2

If 50g makes that much difference I'd say that you should be staying away from King Sized chocolate bars :D

I for one am very glad I work out regularly because by the sounds of it I need to work on my wrist strength and forearm power before even attempting to power on my new iPad.

Heaven help you complainers if you ever get hold of that lead brick called a MacBook Pro.

As we say in the cycling world..........

Needs are very different than wants. I would take battery life over tiny size decrease any day.

It stands out to me. I don't like it, but it is worth it if necessary for the new display.

Some people act as if noticing the weight is somehow attacking the iPad. But when you consider that many of us have been using the iPad regularly for over a year then it would be even more odd NOT to nice the weight. Its slightly different but you get used to it. Its not a big thing to admit.

Not wishing to be picky, but my new 32gb Wi-Fi + 4G is 62 grams heavier than the equivalent ipad 2. Those extra 12 grams can make all the difference!!

No as I'm coming from the iPad 1 but the shape vs the first gen. is quite different and I do miss the feel and shape of the 1st gen. iPad to be honest.
I do love everything else about this iPad though.

I consider all versions of the iPad to be too heavy and too thick. I would prefer the option to have a smaller battery and lighter unit.

thank god you're not on the design team at apple.

until apple decides to make the ipad in various form factors, you have to remember that they need to design a product that will perform well in a variety of usage cases.

a lot of people were clamoring for a retina display. well they got it. but until they can make the accompanying electronics more power efficient and improve battery capacity:size ratios, it is what it is.

Only when I compare it to my mother's 2. But even then, the 3 just feels more solid, and I like that.

I did notice it the first time I picked mine up. Now it's normal. I prefer the slight increase in thickness and extra weight. Makes it feel really good.

I agree, the tapering on the new iPad makes it easier to hold than iPad 2 despite added weight IMO.

I just weighed both 2 & 3 and there is a 2 ounce difference between them both, I thought I would just return the 3 and keep the 2 cause you can definitly feel the difference and the New Retina screen doesnt JUMP out.. compared to the 2.. but after using the 3 for a while and boxing the 2 up cant tell the difference too much now, got used to it.. but when you add the smart over to the 3 that adds another 5 ounces to the total weight if you leave it on.. so I would say the 3 wins.. but I suggest using it alone and getting a sleeve! When I used it with the smart cover, there was a big difference from the 2 to the 3 when using the smart cover and leaving it on when using it. So off to the mall I am to get the Armor for the back and a sleeve..

It isn't that it is too heavy now, but I notice it when going back and forth and it bothers me more than I thought it would.

It is somewhat bothersome but other than that love everything about it. It's probably my only complaint can definitely feel it heavier over iPad 2.

The The New iPad is not intended for iPad 2 owners. It's intended for iPad 1 owners.

Compared to the iPad 1, the The New iPad is a dream. It's lighter, thinner, brighter, sharper, and faster.

You shouldn't own the The New iPad because it wasn't designed for you, so your disappointment is via the decision you made to buy a new one prematurely, not anything Apple has done.

I prefer the thicker iPad, but I'd like it to be lighter and have the same battery life! :D
A carbon fibre back would probably halve the new iPad's weight, whilst doubling it's strength.*

*Assumptions, plucked from thin air.

Sure if you have iPad 2 in one hand and the new iPad in the other, yes you can notice it. But big deal! Once you put a case or cover on it, the difference is less noticeable anyway. It's not like they bumped it up by a pound or two or even added a 1/4 inch to it or something. Sure are some whimps in here! :)

I notice the extra weight but actually kind of appreciate it, it makes the iPad feel very solid and of good quality.

Me~

I spend most of my day running around campus and am really terrible at finding outlets. The longer the battery life the less I have to worry about getting work done.

Going from iPad 1 to iPad 3, I'm enjoying the slimme design. My daughter has the ip2 and the extra added weigh isn't even noticeable to me. They way these people are whining, I imagine they want the 4th edition it float right in front of them.
