I'm not particularly bothered how much Apple make in regards to profit and don't use that as the benchmark for how happy I am with their products. It's irrelevant. Apple produce very nice products but they are very complacent too and when people do flock to stores to buy iPhones that don't really push the boundaries of innovation, they don't need to really try that hard. I'm very happy with my iPhone, I just wish Apple hadn't started ripping us off at the retailer. The prices have shot up and it's becoming unaffordable to upgrade and this wasn't the case just 2 years ago. This is where most of the criticism has come from from those of us who enjoy their products.
I think Apple will lose the UK market over the next few years if they carry on as they are. I'll be the first to blame brexit and our current government for this (I voted for neither) but aside from the fact that US goods are getting more expensive thanks to the currency tanking, we also have falling wages that are starting to lag behind inflation - it's really not the right time (for us) for Apple to decide they're the new Vertu.

It actually doesn't look too bad in SlashGear's hands on video. Also shout out to them for being the only tech site to record it in 60fps:

This is why I'm reserving my final judgement (even though my initial impressions are that it looks pretty stupid) until I get it in my own hands. I can easily return it if my initial impressions and everyone else's here turn out to be right and I don't end up liking it. I have 14 days to decide whether it's that much of a distraction or if it's not that big of a deal everyone's making it out to be. I will read the reviews but I trust my own experience rather than any tech review these days.

Nice rant if it true...

What's not true? Apple's prices are rising, that's being compounded by currency changes, and wages are falling at the same time. Doesn't seem like a recipe for increasing sales, put it that way.
You blaming Brexit for it....The UK is one of the cheapest places to buy Apple products, heck some of the MBP were even less money here than in the USA.

Either way, a rant like that belongs in the politics session...

Oh give over. It's not political to say Uk wages are falling, it's also not political to say that sterling tanked the moment the brexit result was announced and has yet to recover, that's cold hard fact whatever spin you put on it. Go back to reading comforting things in the Telegraph if you don't like it.

Well there you go, another remoaner....Shame the facts don't back up what you are saying about buying apple products in comparison to other countries...Just do yourself a favour and think about that part as a reality check...

LMAO. These really do exist. Or it's a troll... It has to be.

My title says it all. I am literally dumbfounded by all the hatred for Apple I see on here. What’s most mind numbing to me is where the hate is being posted. I would understand if I were on a Android forum or something, but of all the places I’m on macrumors. It’s truly saddening to me, and I’m not a fanboy, but rather just a fan and longtime user of Apple products. With all the visceral energy here spewing of hatred you would think that Apple had kidnapped your first born. I just don’t get it. We all pretty much know what’s coming now days with most every new product release since the rumors are more or less spot on. As far as the iPhone X goes, did any of us really expect Apple not to continue down the path they have always taken? Their path as I see it has always been one of doing things in such a way that their users adapt and end up loving their products. I could be off on this, but I suspect many will fall in love with the iPhone X. I will admit that the two things I’m scratching my head over are the asymmetrical screen with the notch at the top and of course the reliability of Face ID. But I suspect in time just as with all Apple products that they will nail it and all the apprehension will fade into the background. Thoughts?

What this Apple management is doing is totally different from Jobs, don't even compare.

I think it's more scary seeing people spend half their life trashing Apple on an Apple enthusiast site. If you don't like Apple, there are plenty of alternative options. Move on with your life.

How is it trolling posting positive things about Apple on an Apple enthusiast site?

There are definitely trolls on MR, but they are not the contributors who like Apple, buy the products, and are broadly positive in their outlook.

Then protest with your wallet. Apple does not care what you or I think otherwise. And expecting them to “relate to the people” is never going to happen. They are a for profit company. Hit their bottom line and then maybe you’ll get their attention. What I know to be true from the past that’s the most pathetic, is that a large percentage of the people complaining in here will be the first in line with their credit cards in hand. Don’t expect to see the change that everyone’s clamoring about while this is still taking place.
This is so very true. Until people stop buying the overpriced and flawed products nothing will change. You could hate Apple for being greedy but in reality Apples extremely loyal user base has brought this on themselves. The biggest issue is iOS only runs on Apple phones, there is no competition for people that only want to use iOS so Apple have free reign to charge whatever they please and release new features at a slower rate.

Samsung and other Android phone makers can't just release anything they like, they have to make great products at a competitive price or people will shop elsewhere, there is plenty of competition within the Android ecosystem. It is why you see such great improvements year after year from Samsung in particular.

Don't worry, you've come across with a more intelligent knowledge of the current state of affairs. People like that are just so loyal to Apple they will defend any cock up the company make.

The current price squeezing we are witnessing is a joke. All the thick idiots in this country that voted for Brexit have given companies like Apple the perfect excuse to rip us off.

I think most people are upset that Apple has celebrated its anniversary by excluding loyal customers.

Means, most Apple users stay with the brand and paid thousands of dollars over the decade.

And what is Apple giving them back in form of the X? An highly overpriced phone that excludes nearly 80% of their customers, because it is twice as expensive as the most sold models.

Apple looks like it has lost contact to the financial reality of the world. It's ok to have higher prices. But it's a huge mistake to have obscene high prices, when your product has become average.

Mobile phones ain't what they used to be 10-15 years ago. They are like microwaves, everyone has one and they are used for what they are ment for.

Nobody needs an augmented burger circulating in the oven, 99% of people will use it one time and never again. Like fancy 3d tv.

People who predict a bright future for augmented reality should look closely at Nintendo. Their pokemongo is similar to what Apple had shown with the X and after a short hype it dropped heavily in user numbers and stays unnoticed in the app stores.

Yes, you can place furniture in your room and see how it looks and other stuff like putting a virtual Porsche in your garage-but it will just sadden you, because it shows you a life that you could have lived but might stay a dream forever.

Apple should have given something back to their customers. Like an anniversary edition of the 7/plus with maximum storage for the price of the smallest storage variant , available for 10 weeks and who does not order within this time has to pay normal prices again.

But Apple did not give anything to their customers. The richest company celebrates itself by getting unaffordable for most people. That is poor!

Lol so despite that our prices are one of the cheapest in the world and I’ve provided a link to an illustration to demonstrate that; you call those who present the facts loyal and thick idiots giving people the perfect excuse to rip us off.

Very interesting. I would love to know what you think of most other countries where the prices are higher?

I believe in a free and open market. It will balance itself. So far the competition hasn’t done its job much as instead of putting pressure on the prices they’ve been joining in to drive them up. Given enough time it will then be the consumers who will have to drive the price point down by not buying those products. That does depend on value and not on a political viewpoint whether to be part of one union or another as @Dented brought into the conversation.

It’s one way of looking at it, another would be that exactly the same conversations were had in 2007. People said all sorts during the introduction of the iPhone. So much so that I recall being able to walk into a shop on launch day and pick one up just like that.

I think the problems has arrived with it becoming so popular that there are nowadays many more owners who realistically never had a true justifiable needs for such a device. Or monthly expenditure.

Very few people have an actual need for this, many more have a desire.

I’m a firm believer in the right tool for the job. Only yesterday got a lovely SE for my youngest who started secondary school and has small hands. A wonderful phone, great speed and features in a small and manageable package for her.

I've never said Apple are not ripping people off in other countries either. I've seen the price rise where I live and can comment with experience of this. The iPhone 7 sold below expectation here so perhaps we'll see that happen again this year. I certainly hope so.

This is all a strawman, I never suggested the UK was the most expensive to buy an iPhone, I simply alluded to the fact that when you take the devaluing of the pound AND falling wages into account, the price hikes Apple are making across the board are probably having a particularly negative effect on their UK market. And the UK is a significant market for the iPhone BTW; there's a reason that we've always been included in the first wave of product launches. Apple traditionally sell a lot of phones here - I dare say quite a few more than they do in Hungary, which you seem very keen to draw a comparison to. Perhaps in time that will no longer be the case.

Anyway, you're obviously feeling triggered by my associating brexit with the fall in sterling's value (you know, the one which happened in immediate response to brexit). I can understand you don't like the negative connotation. I'm sure that once there's anything remotely positive happening as a result of brexit, you'll be the first to let us know; pardon me if I don't hold my breath.

Here's how I see this:

Apple is a publicly-traded business. The pricing of the X is consistent with what any successful tech company would do, given these circumstances:
  • They also offer an iPhone 8/8 Plus which is a great upgrade over the 7, is highly competitive with the Samsung line in every respect except the edge-to-edge screen (though it does have HDR and True Tone), and is priced similarly.
  • They had to price the X higher, because the X simply cannot be manufactured in the massive volumes that iPhones typically sell at. Not until OLED production ramps up over the next few years. Even at $999/$1149, there will be way more people lining up to buy this phone than they can produce until 1Q 2018. Therefore there will be equal amounts of bitching on Macrumors about it being too expensive and at the same time not being able to get one. Go figure. Imagine the shortages and the whining about shipping times if they priced it at $799 (and if they priced it there, then they wouldn't bother releasing an 8, so ALL those customers would be trying to buy the X!)
  • Both the 8 and the X are filled to the brim with innovation, contrary to all the complaining I keep hearing about. People either aren't paying attention or they are expecting rainbows and unicorns. Each year the CPU advances leaps and bounds and widens the gap with Qualcom. If you know anything about CPUs, the advancements this year are simply stunning. It benchmarks better than an I5 MacBook Pro!! Even the 8 has this CPU. While I would agree the iPhone 7 was "fast enough", think about FaceID, ARKit, and other on-board AI functions like Siri, facial recognition in Photos, etc. that this kind of power will enable. Android manufacturers are stuck with Qualcom and Apple users are going to see the advantages grow with each generation. Then look at the cameras and the on-board processing Apple improves each year. The haptics are also class-leading. What about TrueTone? I can tell you that, on my iPad Pro, it's a game-changer when it comes to readability of the screen. I never pull out my Kindle to read a book anymore. Finally, we have FaceID, and the 3D sensors that come with it and enable all kinds of cool functionality. "Apple doesn't innovate" my ass.
  • People keep saying Apple is going to price themselves out of the market. No, they won't. People keep saying that each year about the "regular" iPhone line. Yet they sell absolutely massive volumes of them. Entire cities in China are dedicated to making iPhones. 747s packed with them are flying one behind the other to cities around the world on launch day. Certainly some people won't or can't afford the top-end models. Some will go to Android for that reason. But Apple will not be phased. They have plenty of customers. And, they sell a broad line of phones at a wide range of price points. No one can complain that they can't get an iPhone at a good price. Some of us need to buy a Toyota instead of a Ferrari, and Apple offers both.

I didn't post this to defend Apple. I posted this to inject some reality into the discussion. I wish the X were cheaper too. But I also run a business and I see the facts quite clearly and I think people are completely wrong about how this is all going to go for Apple. They will be just fine.

iPhone user here. I've been on iPhones since the first one (and will be going with the iPhone X) so my investment in iOS apps. is just too large to let go of. Not disagreeing with this though...

I don't know if I would call it hate vs calling it frustration that people feel on Apple's efforts. I think people can have valid criticisms at the direction Apple moves at. There is nothing wrong with wanting a company to serve their customers better. Some of it is a little goofy but some of it is valid and that is what causes companies to (usually) address problems and improve.

I like the X series of space sim games. When Rebirth came out it got a lot of hate (And it was deserved) the company addressed the issues as best as they could I think and recently announced X4 and spoke to the issues people had with Rebirth. So frustration can be harnessed in a positive manner to improve the next product and make the company and customers happy.

Apple's problem is the company is so large and so big and so successful that I think there is a percieved (valid or not) air of hubris around them that makes them feel disconnected from their fans who have driven to this success. People don't want them to fail but they want them to do better and improve in a meaningful way which is how we ended up with an iPhone to begin with.
