It‘s not theirs...it’s yours! You own the NFC device in your phone.
Actually you don't. Your phone is "owned" by Apple. You purchased a device that uses Apple propriatary software/hardware and you agreed to using such when you "signed" the agreement prior to activating "your" device. Same for Sammy, Google, ect...

And if everything that everyone on here is saying is true and Apple Pay is so cool and sexy that no other company could ever even hope to develop an app to compete with it then what is Apple so afraid of? Why are they so insistent on not opening up API access to the NFC chip if they have the absolute best and sexiest app that could ever be developed?

So on the other side of that coin: If I am a big bank why should I open up my infrastructure to allow Apple to access it and have all my customers use their app so I lose money? Do you think Apple would ever open up its infrastructure or systems if it would lose them even one penny? Never!!!! Apple Pay/Apple wallet only works because they are allowed to access banking institutions infrastructure. This is just another example of Apple being allowed access to other companies technologies but refusing any access to their own. Apple didn't invent the NFC chip but they lock it down like they did. They are using another companies invention the NFC chip to access another companies banking system and making money off of it.
You are not answering the question. WHY are the banks do it? Apple has NOTHING (according to you) for the banks, while the banks PAY Apple to use there infrastructure?
NOBODY cares who invented nfc, or anything else for that matter. Apple has no market controlling position anywhere. And still, with there limited reach they process more payments then Google Pay, Samsung Pay or all the others together. If it is so important to confuse customers or just to get rid of clients, why not say no to Apple? Say to Apple use our app or forget it. What could Apple do?
I know what I would do if my bank would NOT support Apple pay. I go to the bank next door that does. Not because I love Apple (I use what I like and what works for me) but I like a system that works.

Nobody cares who invented it? That is literally the argument for why Apple does everything it does. Look through all the posts on here supporting Apple. Probably in the ballpark of 95% of them say Apple developed their ecosystem they make the rules. The fact that apple developed the App Store is everyone's excuse for all the decisions apple makes. But when you point out the opposite that other than the App Store Apple didn't invent a single technology the iPhone uses then suddenly that argument has no merit?

Fees are paid by the bank and in turn they will charge you more for their services. One may prefer to use PayPal. PayPal now let you buy bitcoins. Does Apple Pay?
Hm. My bank is not charging me anything. For what? They already make money with my money on there accounts or if I go below zero I have to pay interest. But besides that, why would they charge me?

Well, you answered your own question. If one bank offers Apple Pay and another does not the latter may lose the customers. That's why the banks do it not because they like Apple.

And as I pointed out in an earlier reply, the reason why banks acquiesce to Apple and allow them to access their infrastructure is for the very reason you specified above. People would leave and go somewhere else. Apple is in a position to throw their weight around meaning their consumer base that other companies make business decisions based on that. Apple is so big they can say fine you don't want us to access your bank for Apple Pay our customers will go somewhere else. That doesn't make it right. That's why governments start knocking down companies that get too big.

You should be smarter than that. If the banks paid less to Apple, they could offer you higher rates on savings or lower interest rates on the loans. Apple profits should come from somewhere and they are coming from you.

Why does Apple not want to pay Qualcomm what they are asking for their chips. "Qualcomm invented it" so Apple should pay whatever they are asking. Just like everyone says Apple invented the App Store so everyone should follow by their rules. Apple likes everyone to follow by rules they set but has a hard time following other's rules and would rather litigate.

For those people arguing on Apple’s side, the ACM announcement does not mention Apple at all, nor does it mention any banks. Their focus is on creating market conditions that spur innovation and benefit customers.

For those arguing that limiting access to the NFC chip does limit innovation and consumer choice, ACM has not said that it does. They are investigating whether this is reducing innovation and they clearly state that they may conclude that it does not limit innovation.

For those arguing that people should just add their credit card to Apple Pay, credit cards are not widely used in the Netherlands and margins on payments are much lower. Credit card transactions typically incur about a 3% fee while debit card fees are closer to 0.25%. If Apple does charge a 0.15% fee as some people mentioned here, that would be 60% of the total transaction fee. That is why online retailers prefer to use Ideal payments, which is a much better system then credit card payments.

Its like talking to a wall. Evidence? Who needs evidence? WHY DO THE BANKS DO IT? After all, nobody complained, everyone seems quite happy. Then politics comes in because they think they can get money somewhere.
yes, Apple DID develop there OS, they DID create there eco system and they can as a non dominant player do what they want. Not like IE as Microsoft had a market controlling share. Completely different area. And no, it is irrelevant who invented nfc, that is of no interest to the licensed user. If I invent something and someone else builds on that and someone else builds on that I can not come 20 years later (after I got payed) to tell a company that uses part of my invention how to use it. Apple decides how to use it. No one else. If you do not like it, simply do NOT buy there phones. It is that simple. Get any Android phone. That gibes you TONS of choice. Nothing as good but at least the banks can profit.
The companies that sell there goods to Apple so they can make there products profit very well of that, after all, thats why they make the chips, to SELL them. My screen on my iPhone comes from Samsung. So? Who cares?

But I was told that Apple does NOT bring customers? What now? And who cares about the 15% Apple user when there are Billions of Android users?

I know a few patent trolls and liberal judges who would disagree with you. Plenty of shell companies who pop up years even a decade later and sue for some obscure technology Apple is using and they get paid. Big money.

And NO Apple did not "bring" any customers to those banks. I don't have a Capital One credit card because it's in Apple Pay. I was already a customer when Apple "invented" Apple Pay. Banks existed and their customers existed decades and decades before Apple Pay was invented.

You are repeating the talking points from the wrong topic. Apple "delivers" customers to app developers, that's why they have to pay exorbitant fees for App Store. To use Apple Pay you have to be the bank customer first. Banks can't use the App Store or Apple ecosystem to sign you up.

Then why did your bank open to Apple pay? There was obviously no need? After all, they had all the customers they needed. On the contrary, you should get away from that bank if you do NOT use Apple pay. Because as it was said here, banking gets more expensive for everyone. So better stay with a bank that is not supporting Apple pay, they must be cheaper, looking out for there clients.

There's nothing wrong with banks using Apple Pay. But on the same token, if they are opening up their infrastructure to Apple why should Apple not open up and allow banks to develop competing NFC apps on the iPhone? What makes Apple so high and mighty and special that banks and everyone else has to open up to them, but they get to remain closed off to everyone else?

Nothing. Apple is under no obligation to open up their infrastructure. Customers don't have to buy Apple. Banks don't have to register their cards with Apple Pay, etc. It's called voting with their dollars. But it is Apples' infrastructure and they make no pretense it's open to the world.

If Apple made a deal with the banks that if they want the business then Apple will give them access to there system, fine. I doubt that Apple would do that. Why? Nobody told the banks to go with Apple. If they wanted access, they would have asked for it. They did not. That still leaves the question, why they opened up anyway? They do not gain clients (according to you) they have to pay (although nobody knows anything) the customer base is tiny (against android) and you do not even need a phone for contactless payments (the card alone is enough)
Still, everyone jumped on board. And we talking about bankers here, not known to be on the social side or acting in there clients interests. But here we are.

Their "infrastructure"? You mean the NFC chip they didn't invent. The bank's infrastructure is much more valuable than a NFC chip that probably cost Apple a dime. The only advantage Apple has is their customer base. Apple has no magical infrastructure or technology to rest their laurels on. They happen to have a huge user base so they can get companies to bend the knee to them.

You don't think banks asked and would love access to Apple's ecosystem. OF COURSE they asked and of course Apple told them to go kick rocks. Just like some banks are asking for access now and there is suddenly heat on Apple. And no one has ever said bankers are on our side. The crazy thing nowadays is fanboys thinking Apple is on their side or on the consumer's side and have their interests at heart. Apple is on Apple's side. If Apple has the customer's interests at heart then answer this: What reason does Apple have for rejecting xbox cloud or Stadia from the App Store? How is that protecting users? Is big bad Microsoft gonna do something nefarious with xbox games in the cloud that Apple needs to protect us from? No of course not. Apple doesn't want any competition for the little kiddie games that are currently in the Arcade Store.

There are other wallets allowed at stores. I have never seen one store ever that only allows Apple Pay. Every store I have seen allows Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Target etc. I fail to see how any store would say since NFC is opened up we won't allow the other wallets.
There are oodles of retail outlets that accept Samsung pay or Google pay but will not accept Apple Pay, which is extremely consumer unfriendly.
