Depends on the person. I sold my ipad 2 months ago, using my macbook air m1 alot now. Still miss the ipad.
I'm spending more than 1000 dollars because I want a bigger ipad and a good screen.
I dont use pro apps.

Some people pay 500 dollars for a ps5 or gaming pc. I'm a mobile gamer...... cod mobile, mobile legends etc. So yeah I like to have good hardware also for the future. (also gonna use it for xbox game pass ultimate)
Some people buy a second screen or monitor for their laptop. I use my ipad pro as a second screen.
Some people buy expensive tvs so they can watch movies in good quality. I'm gonna use that miniled screen. (I rarely use a tv) Also the ipad means I dont need a tv in the bedroom (yes I read books also but watching a movie in bed is also nice)
Yes I can buy the ipad air for half the price of the 12.9 ipad pro but I'm paying for the better hardware and usage. And the bigger screen.
Also the performance leap of the m1 means I can use my ipad pro for many more years than I would normally.

Yeah, the 2020 is still a monster of a machine. It was ahead of it’s time when it was released and still beats a huge section of Intel’s “now shipping” solutions.

My 12.9" has a May 21-28 estimate and is still on "Processing". It'll be interesting to see when it changes.
 
This morning i order one for the kitchen somehow thinking it was the new one. Glad i havent open it yet will take this one back and order the new one from apple.

And answering snarky questions online...

FWIW, I’m in the same spot. Mine still says processing for 5/21 - 5/27 and I got my order confirmation 5 minutes after 5am here in the Pacific Time Zone. (I purchased the 256GB 11” version)

The last iPad I bought was the 9.7” iPad Pro in early 2016. I’m looking forward to all the updated features, but I’m most excited for a battery that doesn’t die within 2 hours.

all morning I wasn’t able to check my order status, seemed like the apple store app had crashed. Tried to message support and couldn’t. I grabbed my 12 por max and tried, nothing! Just as I was about to loose my shizzz I picked up my iPad and BAM!!! apple store pops up and I see PREPARING TO SHIP!!! I’m am also waiting for DBrand to ship my skins out. Cant wait to check this thing out.. I need some advice tho, Which case should I order? I need a rugged case! not a huge fan of the unicorn beetle pro. I have one on my iPad rn and it’s so hard to get it out of the case. I game almost every night and can’t stand gaming with the case on. Any suggestion? I need something that will withstand some abuse and keep her safe but at the same time easy to remove. Please and Thank you.
 
I ordered my 12,9“ 512 GB 5G IPad at 14:06 CET and my order is still preparing…
Although in the email the delivery was estimated for 25. - 31. the Order Status switched after a few days to 31.
Is seems like Europeans have to wait…
 
I’m curious what this will be like compared to my 2018 12.9. That was 1TB and very powerful. I ordered the same size so spent about $1600 on Verizon 5G. I don’t use it for anything more than gaming, reading, Roon, and web browsing. That doesn’t mean I don’t want an amazing tablet. The same could be said about my 12 Pro Max.

This is what I do on my current iPad daily. I'll enjoy doing the same much more on my new 12.9 that just moved into prepared for shipping!
  1. Take handwritten meeting notes while recording the meeting audio with Notability.
  2. Play games.
  3. Write papers for school and work.
  4. Email for work/personal.
  5. Use all my web-based tools (Jira, Miro, etc.)
  6. Use all the apps I've purchased.
  7. Zoom.
  8. Manage investments.
  9. and and and
My laptop sits unused the majority of the time, except for software development.
