The silicon Macs will change everything once they're shifted completely and ditched Intel.

And lost a lot of users. For me, I am not going to recommend that any family or friends buy into Apple silicon for Macs. The Apple hardware is just not that outstanding any more to lose the ability to run other X86 software.

Now for Apple I am sure they see the change as another step into the walled garden for laptops and desktops. For me, I see it as another reason to move away from Apple.

They are fighting for all developers. 30% of the take is egregious.
Apple is in an interesting situation.
They require onerous fees and prevent side loading of applications.
This is a case of monopolistic behavior.
Google on the other hand cannot be accused as such because you can elect to install apps outside the App Store.
Apple ultimately may not win. They may have to lower fees or allow side loading.

I don't care about the fees, but I do care about side loading apps.

It is my device, I bought it and I should be able to install any software I want without Apple's nanny political interference.

There is absolutely no reason why side loading cannot be done today!

Or, simply get rid of nanny political interference in the Apple App approval precess. There is no need for that either if Apple introduced an App category of unrestricted. Parents or device owners (for example, corporations) could choose not to allow access to unrestricted apps. But other owners could do what they wanted with the device they purchased. Problem solved.

Regardless of what you think of Epic or Apple, the reality is that this is another game developer giving up on the Mac as a platform.

Granted, the Mac was never exactly a good platform for gaming, but it's not exactly great to hear that it's getting worse.

that is not “giving up”.
it is completely intended by epic.
They are “giving up” on a market they barely have players in anyway, to send a message to Apple.

they also lie. They don’t need apple’s support to let you install and update the game. Same as android, where you just get asked if you are sure you want to install the file.

this was solely done to try to paint Apple as the bad guys, and the media is eating it up.

on the macos you can install whatever you want.

Apple do not and will not risk someone going back to them with broken software phone, claim Apple ruined their device, because they installed a malware from something “unrestricted “.

especially because people are stupid...

Sorry, but that's incorrect. A developer agreement permits the developer (Epic Games) to develop for certain platforms listed in that agreement. If they breach the contract, they may not develop for iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS or macOS. There are not separate agreements per OS.

while that is true, you don’t need developer account to develop to macOS.
The “issue” they will face is that a user will have to do extra steps (same as they did with android) to install and run the game. Even less to update it once it is installed.

on the macos you can install whatever you want. . . . . .

I don't believe that is what Apple wants and I do not believe it will continue after Apple moves to Apple Silicon.

Apple wants to control the Mac like they control the iPhone or they won't be in the game. That is why they have marketed so heavily that the iPad is the new Mac. With the iPad they have control. With the Mac they do not.

This is unrelated to what Epic Games is doing on the iOS App Store.

For Apple to extend its punishment to the Mac as well is quite simply an abuse of its power.
If a company has a contract and breaks it and the result is access to your developer account being taken, that is their own fault. It’s like having someone who does work for you and has a key to your house and access to tools to do that work. If you catch them stealing from you and fire them. Will you collect their keys or let them keep them. Would you allow them to keep the keys and let them clean you AirBNB up the street with the tools from your main house?

This is terrifying. I work in CAD / 3D design. Epic bought Unreal Engine. Before that, Unreal Engine bought Twinmotion, which is the only app of it's kind that supports Mac. I need clarification on what this means for UE and TM...

"Fortnite: Battle Royale remains playable for Mac users at this time on the v13.40 build, but is no longer receiving version updates due to Apple's actions."

Let me fix that for you:
Fortnite: Battle Royale remains playable for Mac users at this time on the v13.40 build, but is no longer receiving version updates due to Apple's their own actions.

Epic’s actions were premeditated. Their greed for more money will end up in failure. Fortnite has its time. Unfortunately, it, just like everyone else, must eventually come to an end.

Epic is not fighting for all developers. They are fighting for their own greed. The "for all developers" line from them is just for show and PR. They couldn't care less about anyone other than themselves and their own bottom line.

I'm glad Apple is finally standing up to Epic's bullying and refuses their childish demands. Maybe if they had done this sooner things wouldn't have escalated this far.

Its exactly like enabling a spoiled five year old. Every time you give in they feel more and more entitled to break every rule and get away with it.

They really are throwing themselves at a wall, over and over, about this. Sacrificing hoards of money to squeeze more profit out of certain enclave platforms, but not others. It seems personal in some way.

You don't change things by acting like an infant. You open a dialogue first. If that fails, you escalate. Epic went straight to nuclear without any discussion.

If I want a better mortgage rate, I phone up and say "I'm not happy with the current rate."; I don't just stop paying my mortgage.
How do you know that they didn't try to negotiate in good faith before?

They aren't changing anything on the Mac with the switch to Apple Silicon... They have already stated such.

They aren't marketing the iPad as the new Mac. They are committed to both the Mac and the iPad/iPhone as separate platforms for different uses.
