I agree that Apple should not be allowed to be the only app store on iOS, thus allowing them to collect 30% fees.

And to those who are saying Epic only wants more money, they are passing the 2/3 of the 30% savings onto customers.

Apple has become anti-competitive and it sounds like the US Government is about to agree. Other world governments have also begun to launch investigations into the anti competitive behavior.
You surely also think that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo must allow other stores, right?

The fact that console hardware is sold at poor margins has got nothing to do with this - it’s a just how console makers have chosen to operate and they just need to adapt when Epic opens their own stores for consoles.

But Epic is strangely quiet when it comes to consoles, even though console business is much more lucrative for Epic...

Good luck with the investigations considering iPhone’s market share. If it goes through then basically nobody will be allowed to control software distribution on their own platforms.

YES! Exactly.

I like Burger King. We don't have a Burger King in my hometown, but we do have a McDonald's. I think Burger King should sue McDonald's and force them to sell Burger King food there. I think it's bad that McDonald's has such a monopoly on what can be sold in their store. Sure, I could just drive down to the next town over to their Burger King and not use McDonald's at all, but I have the McDonald's here.

If the only way to get food in your town was at McDonalds....that wouldn't be the best situation...I think.
But hey, if you don't like it, just change town. ;-)

Ps: in this particular case, there only 2 towns, so hopefully the other one is decent enough!

I know you tried to be funny, but this is a completely wrong analogy. The platform is not McDonald's or Burger King but the world you live in. So you could go "buy food" (app) at McDonald's in your hometown (App Store), or you go to Burger King in the next town (sideload without using the AppStore) with a slight inconvenience. Like it works on the Mac.

I'm not interested in EPIC or Fortnite, but since there is no choice on iOS I get what they are aiming for. And NO, Apple can't do what they want, since their userbase has broken a critical number long ago..

I honestly don’t know how this news is blowing up like this.

If I use someone’s platform that comes with a well defined set of rules, it’s on me to follow them. If I don’t like the rules, I shouldn’t use the platform.

Is it not as simple as that?

It's amusing that they're trying to get all of the Fortnite players to pressure Apple into changing by bending the truth.

I sent a tweet to Epic Games today mentioning the deeper hole that they continue to dig, and how they need to find a good strategy. I'm already upset at them for canceling the development for the newer Unreal Tournament. I would have paid good money for that.

I actually think it is hilarious what Epic is doing and I finally registered here just to say so. Epic does not need Apple and knows Apple won’t reduce the 30% cut without winning a legal battle. I respect the guts they have to step up and AS A CONSUMER: good for Epic..and good for ME too. If I could side load LumaFusion, Cubasis 3, or any games of my choosing (including Fortnight) without paying the Apple Tax, I most certainly would. There is no way that I would give Apple the money if they didn’t force me to by limiting my payment options. I’ve already purchased an iPad, an iPad Pro, a Macbook Pro and 3 iPhones - Ive given Apple enough of my money and if I (the consumer) want to purchase apps directly then perhaps Apple should get out of my and the app developers way as we wish to do business with each other and it has actually nothing to do with Apple.

Well why does Epic games keep forgetting that they charge a high part of the revenue from every game built on the Unreal engine. Their prices are not good either. Would they stop charging the game developers a cut from every game they make? Well why not give a sweet deal to all game developers using Unreal engine?

I agree that Apple Policy and commission it’s abusive still

Epic, don’t see how fighting an illusion with another make things better. A lie with a lie :(

So was their non-appstore "lower" price 30% lower? Or did they try to grab some more of that consumer money for themselves?

Havent they been on the App Store more than a year? SHouldnt their fee be 15% now? Just curious
There's 15% for subscriptions after a year. If they charged $20 for the app, and $10 a year for a subscription to the next season. That's not they do. They decided they can make a lot more money by giving the app away for free and charging ridiculous money for digital tat.

Here's their problem: Nobody can force Apple to enter a contract with Epic. And that kind of childish behaviour is an excellent excuse for Apple. There are two companies. If one company talks smack about the other, the other company obviously will not want anything to do with the first one.

-- "Epic Games blames Apple's App Store fees for the unavailability of new content"

I know Epic is unhappy with the 30% Apple takes...

But gosh... people are taking REAL money and turning it into FAKE money... and buying animated dance moves, and various other virtual products.

Do you want to buy a costume? How about a picture of a costume? With your REAL money! o_O

Sweeney and Co. built a goldmine... somehow convincing people to spend actual money on digital goods. And they make billions of dollars from it.

Who cares how much money they have to give to Apple...

70% of billions is still billions!

I wonder how much money Epic was making on Apple's platforms... and how much they aren't making now by being absent from those platforms.

Who will blink first?

Are they so bad?
From Epic's website:

1) Unreal engine:
  • Unreal Engine End User License Agreement for Publishing: This license is free to use and incurs 5% royalties when you monetize your game or other interactive off-the-shelf product and your lifetime gross revenues from that product exceed $1,000,000 USD. -> free until you make 1 million dollars, then 5%
  • Unreal Engine End User License Agreement for Creators: This license is free to use and 100% royalty-free; you can use it to create internal or free projects, or to develop linear content or custom projects for clients, but not for publishing off-the-shelf offerings.
2)Epic game store:
When you buy a game on the Epic Games Store, 88% of the price goes directly to developers, versus only 70% on many other stores.

2)Epic game store:
What is the Epic Games Store?
The Epic Games Store is a curated digital storefront for PC and Mac, designed with both players and creators in mind. It’s focused on providing great games for gamers, and a fair deal for game developers. When you buy a game on the Epic Games Store, 88% of the price goes directly to developers, versus only 70% on many other stores. This helps developers invest into building bigger and better games.
I want to be on the Epic store but I will only pay 0% instead of 18%.

I’m sure that’ll be ok with Epic though, since they’re such a champion for smaller developers and all.

Why doesn’t Epic tell their customers they’re using them as pawns? This is 100% on Epic and their greed.

Because the entire point is to encourage their customers to move to playing on other devices and weaken Apple’s position.

Kind of defeats that point if they say “oh by the way we’re using you a pawns”, no?
