Maybe these companies that founded this self-serving coalition ought to invent their own phone and own ecosystem? If they don't like the T&C let leave and lose those lucrative $$$.

Exactly. I thought they come together to build a better phone that we all love to have, just like Elon Musk built a better car. Instead, they come together to force other to their demands. Doh.

Amusing how Apple is lauded for thinking different and not doing what everyone else does yet when this discussion comes up the first thing apologists say is well everyone else charges 30%. And what consumers pay for devices never seems to come up in the discussion. An iPhone 11 Pro starts at $999. Are we really to believe that NONE of the retail price of an iPhone goes towards supporting the App Store? Seriously?

God forbid Apple take a leadership position here and make changes that would get regulators off their backs. I guarantee you any changes the EU or US government make will be way worse than what Apple could do that would still make them money and be good for consumers and developers alike.

So if I buy a really expensive car, I should be entitled to free or cheaper services – or cheaper gas / charging – just because I paid more than a Toyota costs?

Epic, with their deals with game devs that make the games exclusive to Epic and not allowed to be offered in any other store?

Spotify, ruining podcasts by making them exclusive to their app?

Tile, where I can’t see my past data unless I pay a subscription fee?

All scum. Why do they think they’re so essential to the world?
Needs to be repeated.

The amount of blind fanboyism in this thread is just hurting, as if this was a sports match with people cheering for their team. Regardless of ones stance on this topic, Apple is no ones friend here. The only people Apple cares about is their main stakeholders (plus all the minors ones, but only because they have to). Some people behave as if Apple would repay their blind loyalty in any way, despite this being never the case.

Besides that, there is two sides to every coin. And despite those same principles applying to the companies part of that coalition (namely, they only care about themselves), they do raise some valid point. Todays ecosystems, regardless of which form or nature, opened door to a lot of anticompetitive practices. As a customer, in a free market, you should care about yourself primarily, just like those companies do. Making eco systems less restrictive is customer friendly. That does not contradict an App Store which is selective about the software quality, there is ways to still achieve this in a more open eco system.

I hear this complaint a lot. To me it means tile doesn’t have a complete product. It’s not a new issue so what have they don’t to solve this? As far as I can tell they have complained.

Also, they are owned by Tencent.

Spotify owned by Tencent? A Chinese company? Wow. I didn’t know that.

Apple seems to be alone in the battle to create an environment that is safe and secure for its patrons. I don't have a problem with paying 30% more for that. It is worth it. I want the apps to be vetted and scanned. But that costs money and infrastructure. Yes, I realize some bad actors still slip through. That only fuels the argument that the 30% "tax" is needed. I am willing to pay more to have Apple's quality ecosystem because it is the only one like it. Please don't ruin it.

Epic got greedy and tried to strong arm Apple and Apple didn't budge. Most game publisher have an 80/20 split for titles they publish. That 80% would go to EA, Epic, etc. The fact app developers get 70% and don't have to worry about VAT taxes and other headaches that come along with distributing their apps outside the US is a deal breaker when you are a small dev studio. When Apple first announced this deal this was unheard of in an industry notorious for screwing over the little dev studio.

Sad to see ProtonMail join this. Their stance on things is usually more though-out. How they can even think to join forces with companies like Epic Games or Spotify... :(
Interesting that not ALL the recent companies that had gripes with Apple are on the list. I would have expected “Hey”, but they probably have nothing to gain. I mean, I didn’t know what a ProtonMail was before now, so maybe they see it as more of a way to get their name out there.
I think that the 30% tax is their biggest issue. I have always thought it was too much. Surely at even 15%-20% Apple would still make a ton of money.
No, the biggest issue is clear. A future is coming where Epic will NOT be able to run their own store on the majority of devices that people are spending entertainment dollars on. They would have to go back to just being a publisher instead of having an Epic Store.
The tribalism being shown here is sad. One could not be blamed for thinking humans have not evolved at all after reading this thread.
Yeah, I mean there are plenty of CLEAR things to attack Apple for, pick ANY of ‘em. However, the tribal cult of “WANNASEEAPPLETOOKDOWN” will jump on ANY hate-Apple bandwagon. :) It’s entertaining at least.

I like the idea in theory... but this name sounds like one of those cheesy old WWE factions that would pop up for about 6 months so Stone Cold and The Rock could drop random people with Stunners and People's Elbows left and right 🤣

Looks like it’s...game over...for Apple.
It would be game over for these companies as their success has come directly from Apple developments. If they win. Everyone else looses. Apple has no incentive to push development on a platform that they don’t profit from the 30% does not include and costs incurred to support, be the customer service agent, develop tools etc. It is also below their average profit margin before factoring in those costs.
It is those developments that have allowed these companies to thrive and grow their business exponentially.

It’s stupid beyond all recognition to bite this hand as they pay far more to be on console platforms and make no profit on Android. Apple has the resources to just build what they see as valuable and stop development on the App Store if it will cease to be profitable or will waste to much time fighting idiots.

Wait until that pendulum swings back at the Epic Store. As for Spotify, I guess they’ll pay the artist more per play right? $0.00437 per stream is garbage.
