It wouldn't surprise me to find that the browsers are presented in a randomized order every time. This browser choice screen literally looks like the most non-biased ranking of browsers ever.

That’s my understanding on how it works. It wouldn't surprise me to find that the browsers are presented in a randomized order every time.
This is what most people don't realise. Apple force Safari's webkit on browser devs for iOS. It's just a reskin...they can't innovate, they can't 'beat' Safari because they're locked out of doing so.I mean, the way iOS is designed, they only barely have an option. For better or worse, on iOS third party browsers are basically just third party bookmark and such syncing services because it's all just Safari Webviews.
The only commercial reason to ship a browser on iOS is to get user data and ad money from search referral deals.
That's what's funny about that choice screen, they all claim to be the fastest browser but they're all using the exact same engine.
Tell that to Microsoft. This browser choice screen literally looks like the most non-biased ranking of browsers ever.
It is ridiculous that the EU thinks it’s Apple’s job to do all the advertising work for other browsers.
There is a list of browsers in that setup screen. No one is favoured more than the other. Safari didn’t get special treatment or a big highlight.
And then, if they pick Android, the phone would read, “Great Choice! Return this device to where you bought it from and enjoy your wonderful new Android device.”A year-long investigation into a browser selection screen. Sounds like a great use of time and money.
Maybe Apple should just let EU users pick iOS or Android when they first set up the phone and be done with it. You want completely open software to do whatever you want? There's your choice.
There’s nothing preventing any browser from actually, you know, becoming the BEST. Being so good at what it does that people tell other people and they tell people and so on and so on. It’s hard work making something people want to use. If a browser is not popular, it’s 100% because that browser has done nothing to set themselves apart from the crowd. That’s because nobody else was realistically given a chance if the default was always safari on top of google then no wonder it was allowed to become the best
By the definition of a monopoly, no. That’s why the DMA doesn’t mention monopoly at all because there’s no metric where an Apple product can defined as a monopoly WITHOUT using one of their trademarked names in the description. And, even in the EU, the use of a company’s trademarked name to define a market is not a monopoly, it’s “a list of products made by a company”.I’m assuming you don’t think the mobile operating system is a monopoly because you have a choice between iOS & android?
So, in YOUR mind, there will never be a company that will ever perform as well or better than Google or Apple? There’s such a long history of technology companies catching the market leaders stagnating and beating them at their own game (one as recent as 2007, not even 20 years ago) that it surprises me that someone still thinks that current market leaders will be in that position forever. It doesn’t matter if a start up company developed an OS it wouldn’t be able to compete with google & Apple regardless
Yeah, folks that use Apple mobile devices are very profitable to companies in the EU. They recognize that the iPhone MUST be a part of their digital future. The EU has been really going after Apple haven't they?
Couldn’t agree with you more on this point. I expect a “truly designed from the ground up for AI” OS here before too long. And it won’t come from Google or Apple - too much legacy support required. So, in YOUR mind, there will never be a company that will ever perform as well or better than Google or Apple? It's sad, because Safari came from KDE's html engine, and then Google cloned it, and for a while Safari and Chrome were very compatible, but ever since, Google has been looking for ways to crap up Chrome.

Apple is finally allowing full versions of Chrome and Firefox to run on the iPhone
The EU browser wars are about to take off in a big way.www.theverge.com
Actually in the EU they don't have to use Webkit.
You’re probably right. But outside of geeks and either Apple or Google ‘haters’ - normal people don’t buy phones for the os it runs. They buy it because they like or want the phone. They want an iPhone, they want a pixel, they want a galaxy. It’s not a new OS that will take the top slot, it’s whether or not the company that makes it also makes a killer phone (or a phone killer) to go with it. Otherwise nothing will budge any time soon.Couldn’t agree with you more on this point. I expect a “truly designed from the ground up for AI” OS here before too long. (And before you ask, if I knew what that looked like I’d be working on it 🤣 )
Yes because I believe that these 2 companies will constantly squeeze out any competitor that tries to come along due to serval factors like the amount of financial support behind themBy the definition of a monopoly, no. That’s not particularly true because a lot of people actually buy the mid to lower tier android phones in most parts of the worldYou’re probably right. They’re not buying it because it’s Android though. They’re buying it becuase it’s what they can afford, or what they want. Exactly and i can’t see the status quo changing anytime soon in the west in regards to Apple & google because the system is setup away with the two companiesThey’re not buying it because it’s Android though. If only desktop Safari was able to better handle web pages like Reddit and X. I type and 13 second later the sentence comes out, and I am on fast wifi and use a M2 Max Studio. Then there are the random sites that don't play nice with Safari. Add those up and it is unusable on the desktop (for me).The same benefit they get for people using all their apps. The ecosystem lock-in.
Also it's literally the very last and only browser that's not just an ad-serving or personal data hoovering machine.
People need a browser so for better or worse I hope Apple never gives up on Safari. Chrome and Edge only exist to try to suck all of your digital data into their monetization engines and lock you into using their accounts.
Safari is the last browser (engine maker) where the user's interests and the browser maker's interests are even close to aligned.
Mozilla has lost their way and everything else is just a Chromium skin.

I am using content blockers. I never go on the web without them. Please tell me the ones you use!! I’d give anything to switch back to Safari full time!!Reddit and X are the two prime examples of the absolute worst practices in web development. Those two sites are specifically designed to hide the content you came there for and push absolutely everything else at you all over the screen.
A lot of websites are designed to be unusable, but they work for me because I have Safari loaded up with content blockers and JavaScript modifiers to make the web usable.

Thank you! I have primarily used Ghostery.Adguard and StopTheMadness seem to help. Not sure what specifically is causing such performance problems on those sites aside from all the junk they load on the sides, but you can zap those elements permanently with Adguard.
I think StopTheMadness is doing a lot of work in the background that I don't even realize, which is its whole point as the name implies. It automatically rewrites the JavaScript to remove a lot of hostile elements and can be highly customized or disabled entirely on a site by site basis.
Make sure to get StopTheMadness Pro since it's really 2.0 but the App Store makes it hard to upgrade, as its developer Jeff Johnson blogs about at length. $10 one time and totally worth it.
FWIW I wouldn't recommend setting this up just for ad blocking, but I run pi-hole on a home server and don't experience any of your reddit issues. If you have an always-on computer somewhere it might be worth investigating.Thank you! I have primarily used Ghostery.
People would use it regardless. It's been the best search engine for almost 30 years. People know that.Yes that’s true but over time because it’s been the default option on both platforms it’s allowed to get consistently better because most consumers haven’t bothered to change it & went with the default option anyway
Like myself & others when they first got the iPhone they just left the default engine as is because most people don’t bother changing it & just go with it.
Right however if we are basing it on that logic then how is any search engine supposed to compete with google if it’s the default one & it’s buried within the settings app that the general public doesn’t even know where it is.People would use it regardless. It's been the best search engine for almost 30 years. People know that.
