heavy makeup?
I'm guessing either the makeup or perhaps he was sweating under the lights. But either way, if either one of those causes problems then it is going to have a huge impact in real world use. But it is clear as day he purposely wiped both sides of his face before using the second phone.

Touch ID wouldn't have failed :p
That was a fail by face id in its debut, just adds insult to injury considering the thousand dollar price tag.

Either way if it fails badly I smell a class action lawsuit.

Face ID failed as many have said. That message is a message you get after a few failed unlock attempts not after a reboot.

The very telling thing for me though is the fact that the other two phones Apple announced today do not include Face ID. If we are truly to believe that Face ID is the future of unlocking phones then why don't Apple's two other flagship phones include it? Price might be a factor but my opinion is that Apple knows Face ID is a step backwards and that Face ID is the result of failed attempts to install Touch ID under the display.

If they had included Face ID in the iPhone 8 the X would have sat on shelves collecting dust.

Let's face it the iPhone and iPhone + are the pinnacle of Apple iPhones. They could have just added OLED to the same bodies and everyone would have jumped for joy. The X will be around for a couple of years before moving to 11.

I am going to say next year we will see the iPhone 9 with Touch and Face ID. The XS just adding a XS Plus.

The 11 will be with Apples own version of OLED with Touch ID and Face ID in regular and Plus.

They could have put it on the back but chose not too because they believe it is a worthy replacement.

who cares ... it is a stupid phone any way ... Iphone 8 is the real thing.

Correct. Facial recognition could become a very useable tech in the future. But when it is the sole unlock method for your $999 phone (aside from normal passcode) and you have a tech that is far superior and could have been added to the power button or on the back of the device it doesn't make sense. It needs more time for development.

$999 for beta testing face id lol. Touch ID on the side button would've been better than no Touch ID at all.

That why apple release 8 behind X
incase beta test on X people still buying 8 .... back up idea :)

so next yrs 6-7-8 will exist with home button ... and X will be alive

Face ID did FAIL.

It stated "Your passcode is required in order to enable FaceID". That's a different error message, the same one you get when TouchID fails. It failed.

No Denying.....

Message with first phone:

Your PASSCODE is required to ENABLE Face ID:

Read and weep: https://www.macworld.com/article/30...-to-enter-your-passcode-when-you-wake-up.html

Your password is required when you don't unlock your phone for 8 hours with TOUCH ID and Now face ID

I can't believe people overlook this fact.
Facts mean very little here. Or when making a presentation. You haven't realized that yet.

Everything is perception. Apple stock took tumble when people believed face ID didn't work. Was absolutely amazing. Stock price tracked the presentation to the minute.

Seriously, if FaceID ends up being a major fail this will be bigger than Forstall getting the boot for maps. This is messing with the way people interact with their phone, bank, log in to apps, etc. If people have to be forced to using numeric pass codes and typing in their password heads are going to roll.

Apple stock tumbles during every announcement since 2005

The device failing could simply have been the result of a software issue with that preproduction unit. That said, it was not the result of the device being restarted prior to use. The message that was seen on stage is not the same message you get when logging into the phone after a reboot.

Yes we all know that. But in this case it tracked the unlock problem. Hesitate calling it a fail as it may have been indigenous to unlock safety protocols. Never the less for a presentation, perception speaks louder than truth.

I didn't see this as a "fail" at all. Demo model that was perhaps just powered up before the Keynote and an ID/Pin needs to be entered, he just didn't know or bothered with the PIN? He had the backup already on.

Now something like THIS would have been a "fail!!" o_O

Did you guys stop to think that the phone may not have Federighi’s face registered to begin with? If the demo had shown with him doing the registering and then it failed to recognized then I would believe. I would give a benefit of the doubt rather than screaming Face ID failed.

You see how many journalists are playing demo units with iPhone X? Surely they would have reported if there’s some problem with Face ID not recognizing.

So youre saying Apple has become incompetent at their Key Note Presentations? Who else's face would be there if it was Federighi who was presenting?

That’s why he had a backup phone if something goes wrong, i.e Someone had placed another phone in presentation unit instead of his or simply a bad demo unit. Apple didn’t plan on having perfect presentation either hence backup phone. I guess we’ll find out in November if there’s going to be a #faceidgate.
