I don’t think this was a FaceID fail, it was just someone had forgotten to enter the passcode for first tine use - turn your phone off and on and try touch ID and the same thing will happen.

Yes it was asking for the password when you first boot up but it was like that probably because of random reboots (buggy software).

I think it just shows that it's not perfect but I'm sure it will work most of the time. It has to anyway as it's the only method now. Apple are bit stupid.

I don't think Apple is stupid. I think they are a very intelligent company that's experimenting with new technology that needs maturity. Face ID won't be as fast as touch ID, but that will develop just has touch ID did. It's just a matter of adaptation and what someone prefers.

Sorry that was supposed to say not stupid. It was a typo. Touch ID was flawless out of the gate for me anyway. However I agree it got faster over time.

I find both touch id and face id gimmicky….been using manual password entry forever and happy.
Wouldn't buy the X simply because of that top tab that intrudes on the screen…
watched craig f fluff the face id demo and even when he got it to work, there was a distinct lack of applause so
I believe it is a gimmick that doesn't really impress. In any case apple has way too much of our personal info,
don't want them to have fingerprint and face as well.

Im due for an upgrade this year…just won't be the X.

Yeah, the feature didn't fail at all, but Craig's reaction made it seem like it did lol. I think he just had an "OH SH*T" moment and tried to cover it up. I'm sure that's their biggest fear as presenters.

It actually wasn’t a fail. If you look closely, you’ll see that just like touchID, you have to enter your passcode first in order to activate it (after turning on the device). So he just had to put the code in first and then it would have allowed his face to be scanned.
There’s an entire other thread dedicated to this, but in short, no. The failure message is what was shown. The restart message actually mentions the fact that the phone has restarted, and his didn’t.

This thread is crazy. No sense in complaining as FaceID is what we got. Don't like it, move on.

Hope all you complainers do not change your mind so I will have less problems getting mine.:p

I am betting that many who are complaining now will be ordering the X at midnight!

The phone could easily have just been turned on before being placed on stage, though. And if that's the case it would prompt him to put in his password (which it did) because it would be his first time using it since the restart. I'd be much more inclined to believe that, since that's MEANT to happen, than just some freak crash accident.

Another point that against Face ID is that identical twins won't be able to use the feature. Or actually any of the twins will be able to unlock the phone. There is no such problem with Touch ID.
Wow. Now that’s grasping at straws to make an argument. Regardless, TouchID allowed for multiple finger input. Perhaps FaceID will perform similarly.

Are you for real? TouchID is gimmicky and you prefer putting in your password each and every time? Each to his own and all, but you’re the first I’ve ever heard/seen someone say that.

Well, this is an online forum, and the purpose is discussion. We all know how cathartic MRF can be. Good luck getting yours. My 7 works great, so I have no plans to upgrade this year. (But you’re right about complainers in general preordering!)

Again, no.

Try this: restart your phone and try to use TouchID. What message do you get? Now purposefully use the wrong finger on your TouchID a couple of times. What message do you get?

Which one matches the one on stage?

I would actually prefer having the touch ID either in the apple logo or the power button. I think it was stupid idea to remove. We should have options.
A) We don't know how reliable/fast face ID is
B) It's gonna take some time till it gets adopted and till then, I'm gonna have to use pass codes in every freaking app..

And I definitely looks slower than TouchID as well.
I have surface pro 2015 model and its face recognition is super fast. One failed attempt on stage is not a big thing, apple hasn't hand over iphone to end user yet. Iris scanner in s8+ is also super fast. I find face recognition more faster and convenient using surface pro and s8+

That’s interesting to note. However, if I were interested in the X, everything would be in comparison to my TouchID which is extremely fast and reliable in a multitude of conditions. If FaceID is in any way slower or less reliable, it’s a step backwards, IMO.

That black tab is annoying. Can you imagine watching TV with one side of the screen having a black tab? How will movie watching work? Will it block out a part of the movie?

Agree 100% black tab is annoying and looks so ugly. When I saw the leak before iphone x unveiling i thought the leaks are not accurate. But got disappointed to see this thing is real. Apple could've increased the iphone size and adjust the full bezel on top instead of cutout.

Yes i agree if the face Id doesn't work like my other mentioned devices it would step a backward. Apple must give the final product to end user in perfect working condition as promised.

Even finger ID did not work perfectly when it first came out, but Apple made it better and better. Face ID will likely be the same.

The black tab is an non-issue to me. Most will not be that bothered, some will not be able to get over it. It has been the same with every new iPhone. I can remember when people swore they would never buy another iPhone if they increased the screen size over 4"! LOL

It didn’t *actually* fail per se. It said on the screen “you must input your passcode to enable Face ID” - same as when we restart our phones and cannot use Touch ID until we first put in the passcode.

When i see the iphone x personally and if it doesn't look bad then i guess I will get over it :p Usually I don't need to see new iPhones personally to pre-order it. I am sure after using face ID people will not miss Touch ID. I use face ID in Surface pro 2015 model and its flawless and super fast.

Been using FaceID on my Thinkpads for so long that I forget about it. Some will like, some will not.
It has worked well for me, too.

This is exactly right. I didn't catch this at first either. Face ID worked fine. Somebody didn't enter the passcode after a restart....and that somebody also might be looking for a job today lol.

And he wasn’t about to enter the passcode for millions to see so he moved on to the next device which was ready to go with passcode already entered. Especially given the recent leaks/hacks/etc.

It was both a failure and embarrassing. I see nothing sensationalist.

What is sensationalist about that?

It did fail.
And yes, he was embarrassed. Maybe watch it again…
Exactly.

Again...this has already been debunked (in this thread) and there’s an entire other thread addressing this “explanation.”

Try this: restart your phone and try to use TouchID. What message do you get? Now purposefully use the wrong finger on your TouchID a couple of times. What message do you get?

Which one matches the one on stage? (Hint, it’s the latter.)

When I try to purposefully use the wrong finer, all I get is “Try Again” which is not what he got on stage.

I will have to strongly disagree with tough ID being gimmicky. One of the best implemented features into iphone i think.
