At 1:41 the guy demonstrates Face ID and had to make a slight angle adjustment. Doesn't install confidence.

Lol did you listen during the video? At 1:41 he purposely had his eyes closed, and as soon as he opened them it unlocked instantly.

Ok I hope u r right, but the problem with that theory is that iPhones only require you to enter ur passcode the first time after restart, and it should say "Face ID requires you to enter your passcode after it restarts" instead of "enter your passcode to enable Face ID". Unless Apple changed their logic.

Anyways how well Face ID works will likely determine my buying decision so I hope it's just a one-off incident.
Everyone is assuming it's the same but it might not be. This might be the way they handle FaceID and passcodes. Everyone saying it failed needs to calm down.

We dont know what happened. We cant conclude how touchID works to that of face ID. I doubt a phone will need a code input everytime your phone reads someone elses face by accident.

it didnt attempt to detect him because it needed passcode first. when you say "It doesn't detect him" you imply the detection was attempted. It wasn't because when he had to press the passcode first
Your sane logic is infuriating people haha

Sigh...

Watch the video again, he made a slight adjustment AFTER he opened his eyes.

Unlikely, but possible.

Is it true that face ID in the dark will have turn the LED light on to illuminate your face while trying to unlock your device?
No, that would be very bad. It's an infrared light. To an infrared camera it illuminates your face but the light is invisible to the human eye. Similar to how infrared lights work with night vision goggles.

I have a mount for my phone in my car in the middle of the dashboard. I use it as a GPS when I’m driving constantly. How can I unlock it without leaning over and “looking” at the phone, or taking out of the cradle? These are both unsafe options while driving.

There are so many questions surrounding Face ID. Hopefully tech youtubers will soon get to test it extensively.

That's actually pretty impressive how nicely it works. Really cool seeing third party apps have the Touch ID logo replaced with Face ID.

It's very impressive and so is the technology that has gone into it, I think some people are choosing to ignore it tho because they think that they will miss Touch ID, which is fine but the mistake on stage hasn't put me off pre-ordering on October 27th, mistakes happen nothing is 100%, even Touch ID failed with wet hands and so on (no I don't hate Touch ID I use it all the while on my iPhone 7 Plus).

You'll have to type the pass code or take it out and aim it towards your face.
I have my phone sitting on the right of my desk most of the day and wouldnt want to keep bringing it in front of my face to unlock.
Touch ID is simple, easy and fast.
This new iphone X is not for me.

This may be a stretch, but if this flops (excluding the failed demo) over the next 6 months due to too many complaints, situations where it can't be used effectively, or even worse, someone bypassing it - then I can see them bringing Touch ID back next year. They almost had it ready to launch this year, but the backup solution was to go straight to Face ID.

They essentially have 2 options, to give in to the complaints (this will be obvious if iPhone 8 sales end up being much higher than expected), or to double down on Face ID, and try to make it much quicker next year.

I would just increase the bottom bezel and put a button on it with Finger ID. I may not buy any of the new devices and see how I feel about it towards the end of the year.

Yes, for the average person the iPhone X does not seem that ground breaking. There is much that is not understandable. The X is a stunning achievement. The first iPhone held manufacturing tolerances that other manufacture laughed at, "Apple will never be able to hold those tolerances." Apple did! And not hundreds of times a day, but tens of thousands a day. Their new manufacturing tolerances are almost at the molecular level. Stainless steel is a more noble metal than aluminum and more difficult to form. The scope of the miniaturization is impressive. How many sensors are in the camera bar a the top—originally there were only two? It will just take time for the software innovation to catch up.

End of the day until we see how FaceID works in real situations we won't know how it copes or its reliability People are nitpicking one occasion but ignoring the 100s of times it worked fine in the presentation and after event showcase. Any form of ID authentication has limits and scare stories going around. Touch ID had them also when first came on the scene. People have a great choice of iPhones and I have not found one phone that gets authentication right 100% of the time.

Right, if they made it a more "compressed" button (like Samsung's old physical buttons, short but wide) then it might have been better suited. However it would be very android like, and I can see why they didn't want to do that. Apple basically skipped a generation here. Instead of going virtual button, with shrunken bezels, they went straight to all screen display, with no buttons. If you like gestures, and don't mind Face ID, then this is great. If you don't, then there are so many compromises here that it's ridiculous.

Tbh to tech enthusiasts it's still not ground breaking. I'm a techy person, and I visit this site almost every day, but I was not impressed at all yesterday. I've been ready to buy this phone since over 12 months ago, and almost sold on it as of 8 months ago; but while I was expecting to be convinced of my purchase through the presentation, but it actually made me decide not to buy it.

Face ID is going to be less convenient for me, that much I already know. The notch performs worse in day to day use then I previously could have imagined. Gestures are just as bad as I thought they would be (the flick up "further" for app switching looks finicky AF), the camera features are the same as the 8, and the display doesn't even have Pro Motion, which is part of what the "future iPhone" should have, since they introduced this feature on the iPad already.

And then for all these set backs, I'm paying a $300 premium???

Don’t forget there is still the passcode option. It’s not like you’ll only be able to unlock your phone if it is scanning your face.

True, but that defeats the purpose of "discretely" using the phone. (I'm not the type to remember finger placements without looking or feeling for a button)

I guess the reason I have questions is because I've used something like this before and it was just a gimmick and I went right back to using the fingerprint scanner. Not saying Apple's won't be better, I'm sure it will. Once you see "Can't locate face" or have to stop what you doing to hold the phone steady, one too many times, you are ready to say F it.

I can only get touch ID to work 30% of the time and it takes 4/5 tries. So face ID can't be worse than that for me

I don't think Apple's ego will allow them to bring back TouchID next year, something they basically deemed as inferior technology in the Keynotes.

If it does horribly this year, they could bring it back. I don't think it's likely, but they could. They were working on putting it in the display for this phone. They ran into manufacturing issues which is why they rushed Face ID only. What I would assume is if they bring Touch ID back, they would have both. In display Touch ID, and Face ID.

Made a short video to prove that Face ID didn't fail. In fact it wasn't even detecting him because the authentication wasn't even attempted by the phone: See here:
Would be interesting if ANYONE is willing to counter this now

Good video. Makes sense.

What would be your explanation for it not working. I get messages for most of the events a passcode is required and they are generally specific. "Passcode is required after a restart" "Passcode is required after 48hours" etc etc...

Only time I get "passcode is required to enable TouchID" (FaceID in this case) is after failed TouchID attempts. Maybe other people working around it while its laying on the podium or something?

Hmm I also heard those rumors.

And it would make sense to have both on their flagship device that way if people hate FaceID they could ignore it, or vice versa if they love it.

Generally not a good idea from a security perspective (adding another point of entry). However Apple could mandate to only have one on OR the other if they really felt it was a concern.

FaceID would be great on an iMac. And a better place to work out all the bugs.
