And some of you guys just keep throwing throwing your money at Apple no questions asked. The OP has a legitimate point. Will that extra cash break the bank? Of course not but it's still money.

You threw the truck load of money at Apple when you first bought the mac, now you're complaining when they ask for a bit more? Go buy a PC when you're poor

Oh please. This has nothng to do with throwing money at Apple. This has everything to do with a sense of entitlement attitude and a never-ending I'll complain about anything Apple does attitude. IMO, of course.

Congratulations! You are now enjoying the feeling of a sunk cost.

Loving the economics reference ;)
I most certainly don't mind the $20 upgrade at all.
I might not be an early adopters of hardware, but when it comes to software, I almost always run betas long before it releases and buy it anyway even if some deem it not worthy. Like in the case of Lion, I am too used to 'natural' scrolling that it bugs me whenever I uses Windows or if I have to go back to SL. Just a little thing that might be worth $30. Hopefully the performance increase in ML is a big one, as I hate how often I get beachball in Lion. (Well, I live with it)

I'm not arguing that $20 isn't a great deal because it is. I just wish I knew last year how pointless it was to buy Lion for $30 when they would drop basically an updated version this summer $10 cheaper.

This is the same dilemma as buying a new iPhone every WWDC/October. You know there will be an updated version the next year but you buy it anyways. Also, as many have pointed out, $29 or $19 for the most advanced consumer computer operating system is an absolute steal.

If you don't want to pay for a new, great operating systems, stop using a Mac.

That’s OEM - you need to buy qualifying hardware to legally qualify for that. The normal retail version of 7 starts at $200 bucks.

OEM versions are priced for system builders and are not sold the same as retail. You might as well quote the educational version which is cheaper, but again, is not the same thing as retail.

Honestly I feel as if these updates aren't really "OS" upgrades, it feels like a service pack I have to pay for, granted $20 isn't breaking the bank, and I would be the first person purchasing this upgrade. It really isn't a rip off, you obviously know the next update will be coming out, and you will have to pay for it, you chose to upgrade to lion, if you feel ripped off you can be like the people who didn't upgrade to lion and you can wait for the next update who knows, maybe it might be $10 :D

For the umpteenth time they are not service packs. A service pack is a compilation of fixes and patches and does not generally incorporate new features of any kind. 10.8 incorporates many new features and in fact includes many news frameworks and API’s for developers to utilize and exploit. Just because there are not 1000 new groundbreaking new things or includes changes the the UI (both of these things unlikely to happen anymore with OS changes) doesn’t mean that Apple’s OS updates are not big.

Heck, in MS land a service pack is pretty much literally a compilation of already existing patches and fixes in a single package. There is literally nothing new that functionally changes how the OS operates from a feature standpoint. The main exception was XP SP2 - the oddball since it actually included a couple of features.

I feel like users who paid to upgrade to Lion are getting ripped off. I upgraded to Lion because I am a huge apple supporter and loved the idea of a new OS for $30. Now with the release of Mountain Lion just a short year later, I'm regretting my decision of purchasing OS Lion. Now if I want to get 10.8 I will have to pay $50 while those who didn't upgrade only pay $20. I at least expected there to be a discount for Lion users. Any other Lion users regretting the upgrade?

You just don't seem to get it. Apple don't allow major upgrades of OS's to skip versions - e.g. If you have 10.6, you must upgrade to 10.7 then this to Mountain Lion. $20 is a bargain a full OS upgrade - cheapest in the industry. You cannot stay on Lion, skip Mountain Lion and then go to the next one, as you have to have all interim major releases - each with their own upgrade cost.

Not True for Mountain Lion, Apple has in fact said that you can upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Of course your point is still apt, you are getting a great bargain, but in this case, the OP bought something - he had no real choice to get ML since it wasn't for sale and pricing wasn't available. Apple cannot be blamed here, he bought something that Apple freely offered and did not force him to buy. If Apple imposed the requirement to buy Lion, he would be in the same boat (since Apple would presumably offer both - they know that people can delay their purchase, but they would warn them before outright pulling it)

I went in knowing that I am paying for an OS that would eventually get another paid upgrade in the future. I enjoyed Lion and got my moneys worth. Now I get to purchase Mountain Lion even cheaper than Lion cost. I'm down. Those who are going straight from Snow Leopard didn't get to enjoy Lion like I did. I have no hard feelings.

I totally agree. Now if it was the price of what Leopard used to cost, I could see where people would have a problem. Mountain Lion is even cheaper than Lion now, only 19.99. I'd say that's fair price, considering it's only a year later versus two years like snow leopard and Lion, and I've been running Lion since day one, and I'm happy that the new one is coming soon and cheaper

Considering I will be paying $20 to update 4 computers....I would say $5 is a pretty damn good price!

As long as you have the App Store (SL had it) you can update to ML

Buying RAM counts, just make it also a RAM upgrade at the same time. Problem solved

Duff-Man says....hey, I bought System 1.0 and I think I'm entitled to free system upgrades for life. I don't care how much it costs Apple to develop new software - I'm entitled dammit....oh yeah!

Every single word of this post is a complete and utter fabrication apart from "$20 is a bargain a full OS upgrade - cheapest in the industry."

Would I have to upgrade from Lion to 10.8 in order to upgrade to 10.9 when it comes out? Or can I upgrade from 10.7 to 10.9 directly?

Given that 10.9 probably doesn't exist in any meaningful way, who can say?

Which makes it an additional cost - and OEM's are not the same thing as the retail licenses. OEM versions are not sold as upgrades - you can't get them at most retailers like Best buy.

Not only that but OEM versions are not provided with any software support by MSFT. I've used both the OEMs and full retail versions before and the support you get with the retail version is phenomenal. With OEM, you're on your own for any software issues.

Also OEM versions once they're activated, they're locked on that hardware. If you even change a MB you'd need to contact MSFT and explain everything and they will move it over but they do it reluctantly and only so many times.

Correct, I forgot to mention those things. There is no support and they are locked to the hardware with re-activation restricted to MS allowing it.

I don't regret buying Lion and I'll definitely get ML when it comes out. $20 to install the latest OS on all your machines, great deal imo. Seriously, it's only $20, don't eat out one day.

hi, first off - wow. just wow.

you have used lions features (with regarding them or not) and now essentially want a refund? tough.
this is like eating a pizza, paying then coming back the next day to demand a refund...

i am surprised that apple ARE allowing snow leopard users to upgrade to mountain lion straight away without the need to purchase lion, but im fine with that as, you know - you pay for stuff so you can get it now, not wait a year so it comes down in price...
http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/

think of your payments as a long term investment in accumulating apple software upgrades

silly thread.

There's another update coming next year and another the year after that and another the year after that one. Why don't you wait for all of them?
