Last year there was absolutely no lines outside my local AppleStore in the UK and I don't expect there to be any lines this year either. I can't think of anything worse than camping out in the street for a week just to buy a phone you could buy online anyway but hey it's their life I guess.

I waited in line for a week once, in Colorado Springs on the side of Independant Records, for tickets to the Rolling Stones "Farewell" Tour in 1983, sure am glad I saw their last tour.

In the UK pre-orders are unlocked since day 1
Tis a shame that in the US, to sell everything "massively" and "cheaply" (or to drown people in debt) they create all these special contracts, and upgrades, and locked ****.
Why is it pathetic? Some people are being paid to be there, great for them.
I am one of those people who likes to buy technology and computers I wouldnt mind waiting in line if I had the time and money, it would be fun to me.
Some people hunt, some people build cars, some people wait in line to buy concert tickets, and some people like to buy tech.
Its a hobby, just because you don't want to do it doesn't make it pathetic.
I ordered mine at my job on sunday, I am 63rd in line for Verizon so I will get mine a week or 2 after release.
The release is 9-21. That's about 7 weeks of production until first appearance. FYI.article said:

The promotional junk is just....really sad. Sad in the sense that this is how they think their company or product will take off or whatever. I am glad to see many sites & blogs not posting the companies information. Hopefully in the future we can see actually customers in the lines rather than more promotional garbage.

One "package" is the phone you paid for.
The other "package" is probably the customs documentation to enter whatever country you're from.
Carrier data will probably show separate broker departure and arrival times for each package because they approve one before the other. It's their own way of tracking packages through their system.

This is my first pre-order for the iphone (an upgrade finally lined up in time), and I obviously would LOVE to see my phone on my doorstep on the 20th...how often do we actually see early delivery?

If they want to sit out and wait for just a phone I don't see an issue. But in my eyes I see it as a waste of time and looks pretty silly.

Pre ordered and received an email from fed ex stating that would be delivering a day early. My preorder came one day before launch. At the time we speculated it would decrease the issues with registration in the stores. I'm sure we are bound to see it this time around as well.
