For those who have no issue, have they tried the apps others have mentioned, or only the native camera app? If it's software I'm not sure I get how it can only affect some phones when those phones are the same hardware and running the same software?
Probably for the same reason other users have bugs during any other software release that other users do not. Beta or public.

And I’m definitely not gonna test something like this on apps I never use just to see if I can mimic the issue. I’m not that curious whether it is just software or mechanical.

I personally have only used the native camera with no issues. 👊😃👍

I had this issue with the Chase banking app. The camera couldn't focus on the text on my driver's licence, and the phone started shaking its moneymaker.

Now, if I use the standard camera app to view the driver's licence on the screen (before taking a photo), and the phone is about 15cm above the licence, the text is not in focus unless I turn on macro mode. Is that right? Should it be able to focus on the text from that distance? Any closer and it's all a blur when not in macro mode.
Same thing happened with me. This is a Chase specific issue (the blur) that they acknowledged and said an update was coming to fix. They said the workaround is to leave it on the camera mode for one minute and it’ll give you the option to manually take it when in focus

Rather than grumbling that it might take a week to get a software fix through, have you ever thought that Apple might have the fix ready tomorrow morning, and they're going to send it to Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram to give them a few days to confirm it fixes the issue?

Maybe Apple and it’s thousands of beta testers should actually do their job and beta test iPhones and iOS 16 running normal applications everyone uses every single day installed on their iPhones and not only the applications that Apple makes. They could have saved this mess from happening in the first place, saved face, everyone’s trust and hundreds of thousands of dollars in replacement parts that got damaged due to the issue. Gotta love Tim Cook not testing properly. He has some very bright ideas indeed.

I did all that, and got back into the app fine.

I'm really just asking about whether that shaking has broken the focus in the standard Camera app given that it can't focus properly unless it's in macro mode.

This is related specifically to the cameras on the 14 Pros. Not something anyone could have tested.

It's an emergency in the sense that it's a problem that causes hardware damage. Your typical iPhone user does not read tech news sites and will not know there's a problem. Lots of people use Snapchat and such. This is going to cause millions of support calls/visits if it's not fixed fast.
Just like @SpectatorHere said, we don’t know if it has already caused damage.

But I agree with you, those that have no idea what’s going on that continue to use it, will probably cause damage before the issue is fix by a software update.

I find it hard to believe it won’t be fixed for another week which will most likely cause the flood of calls/visits you’ve said.

The software issue is breaking the hardware of the camera. They aren’t designed to vibrate like that and shake in that way, it’s damaging the autofocus and other parts.

Indeed, but again, it's not a hardware issue causing it. It is software. Not a hardware fault at source and that is more important.

Mine has never had the shaking and isn’t that great close up without macro mode. I’d imagine that’s just the camera this year, or another camera quirk to be later addressed in an update.

If it damages the hardware, you're just as screwed as if it were a hardware fault to begin with. It's still replacement time.

Anyone, how can I test just the camera that's supposed to be effected? (to see if it can focus properly)

I used Microsoft Authenticator app a lot today and I want to make sure I didn't break the camera. I didn't hear the rattling, but my hearing is not so good at certain frequencies.

Like I said earlier, the very fact iOS 16.0's native Camera app does not exhibit this issue tells me it's more an application software bug than anything else. (emphasis mine) Let's see if Meta's fixes for Facebook and Instagram corrects it first before we declare Apple has a hardware issue.

Who has been using third-party camera apps without issue? I’ve yet to experience this problem in any app. Just seems odd that they say software can fix it, but you would think every phone would be doing the same thing.
14 Pro Max....have not experienced this issue on any of the third party apps mentioned in the article or others within the thread.

There are a LOT of conspiracies on here. Snapchat and social media got minds all messed up :D🤣. You’ll be alright until an update comes out. That said, loving my new iPhone 14 Pro.

Take a few pictures at different distances to what you're shooting at (say, 2 feet, 4 feet, 8 feet, 16 feet, 50 feet, and a few hundred feet and then look at the results?

If they're in focus you're good. If not, ask for a replacement.

Easy.

As an aside, my 14 ProMax is fine.

Hardware replacement? Does Google replace Pixels for their software caused problems after they patch them?
