so that's how you do it. been annoyed with that statement ever since they started having it.

4 days since i bought my new jet black iphone 7, and the "one" of "iPhone" is fading off already :(

This is not fun at all.

I think that's actually really awesome! A cleaner non-branded iPhone looks much better. (My first comment on MR, woo!)

Don't see how having iPhone on an iPhone could be classed as branding?

Maybe if it had the name of a Network Operator on there, yes...

Maybe I am thinking about it wrong #thinkgate

Thank God I cancelled my Jet Black to get this Matte Black instead. The only way I would use it was to put a skin on it.

you're in for another surprise.. users reporting the matte black fading near the antenna lines. I don't think this has made its way to blogs yet, but i've read about reports on reddit with pictures. All seem to have the same issue near their antenna lines.

This reminds me of iPhone 4 and the white finish all over again. Only in that case it was just delayed.

I'd actually want the writing to come off :)

Only concern is someone might think it's a fake iPhone when re-selling.

I doubt most people would notice TBH. Especially if you're selling it to someone who buy's "last year's phone" 2nd hand.

Be

Because this was GUARANTEED already discovered by Apple's QC department.

There is a simple tape test for silk screening, which I assume the printing is.
Sometimes initial production is different from pre-production samples and they have to develop more adhesive ink.

So, maybe they all passed the tape test, but are reacting with the material used for the protector..
Thus, they were probably not able to test the chemical reaction between screen protectors and their ink.
(Maybe they even checked a few of the most popular)

Let me also add that as long as one does not put anything onto that printing it will not come off like that, or by going naked only over time with sweat from ones hands.

Apple can't foresee what users do after they buy the phone, but then again GUARANTEED they are already working on a fix.

You took the words right out of my keyboard.
But, really does anyone care that the information is there or not?

I remember seeing that it is no longer required as long as the information appears in the phone "about".

The info is likely laser-etched onto the aluminum after the anodizing process. This ablates a thin layer of oxides off the surface of the aluminum, leaving markings that are either lighter or darker than the surrounding coated metal, depending on the tint of the anodized layer.

Because the Jet Black phones are polished to a high sheen, the laser etching may only superficially mark the surface of the shiny black coating, making it more susceptible to wear and removal.

I thought american iPhones did not require those big ass labels anymore?
There's nothing in the report that said this user was American.

If you just rub or use the phone normally the text will come off slightly. The text is still there, just darker. I like it that way, it's a feature.

The jet black finish is a precision nine step process, the labels are scribbled on by kindergarten children and crayons apparently.

Honestly I would be happy to get rid of the labelling and a lot of the other Asian flagship phones makers use easy to peel and remove regularly labels so you can actually enjoy the "precision" of the design and finish instead of having bits of faded ink after a few months. Seems like more care and attention to detail can be found on a $350 phone then one costing near $1000.

Slow news day apparently.

I wouldn't say this article makes it a 'Slow news day.' If anything, it's informative for the customer to be aware of this before applying any protective measures to the back of the iPhone. I read about this on a few other threads, but obviously it's prevalent for others to be aware who have the Jet Black iPhone.

Loving this new "feature" already! Goodbye forever CE labels!

Usually when Apple introduces a new phone design, there's some sort of quirk that's discovered within a few weeks of release. With the iPhone 4, it was antennagate, with the iPhone 6 it was bendgate and crescentgate. Since the iPhone 7 isn't really a radical departure in terms of design (and things like the new home button ensure increased rigidity and reliability,) there was bound to be something wrong with the one radically different feature - the Jet Black colour and the process by which it is manufactured.

Sorry to hear that this happens to Jet Black owners who apply such skins to the back of their phone. To be perfectly frank, if I wasn't going to use a case, I would probably just let the phone be naked and suffer all the wear and tear to which it would be susceptible. But, you know, if this is the worst thing that happens to the new iPhone, Apple is in pretty good shape.
