Yes, 1-3 million of a high priced experiment is very significant. It says there is a hunger for the foldable phone, even a questionable one. You can be assured Apple is taking note.

"Failing" Galaxy line?

LOL, you just outed yourself.

Failing compared to the peak success they enjoyed with the Galaxy S4, which sold a whopping 10 million in only the first 29 days. These days Samsung is considered successful if they can sell 40 million Galaxy S phones in an entire year.

The interesting thing about the Galaxy S4 (besides it being their best seller ever) is that it was the last phone Samsung ever reported sales figures for. Even funnier is Apple deciding to stop reporting iPhone/iPad/Mac unit sales last year and watching people claim it was because they're failing and are trying to hide the sales. If that logic is true, then what do you call Samsung for their choice to stop reporting 5 years ago (and without telling anyone they were - they just stopped and kept quiet)?

Not it isn't...Samsung is an enormous company. I'm a well known Apple supporter here, so there is no outing. The difference is, I use facts to make my cases.

"Sold out" sounds great, but we don't know the unit sales and likely never will. Even 1M units is likely a stretch and that'd be $2B in sales for a company with over $200B in revenue. Apple sold $166B in iPhones alone in 2018.

I am an Apple supporter too, but not a cult member. Apple is the ONLY seller of iOS devices. Galaxy is one of DOZENS of manufacturers of Android. Samsung holds the number two position, at 21 percent of worldwide smartphone sales. And Samsung makes the parts for a significant part of Apple phones.

"Failing". LOL. Samsung could drop their phone line completely, and still be one of the most profitable companies in the world.

And that is what would happen if Apple launched Airpower. Total failure.

I doubt they will fix it in "weeks". This has under development for several months/years.

Wait till they cancel it afraid of lawsuits.

You mean like the keyboards in the 2016-2018 Macbooks that break??? or the iPad pro that easily bends? How about the good old iphone 4 antenna design, shall i go on?

there is no proof this accounts for a major percentage of users. It is out there and people still buy it. Not a major issue to the point Macs are breaking everywhere, nonsense of conspiracy theories. I never had a problem with iPhone 4. iPad pro bending thing is just a stupid youtuber thing. Idiots bending something that is not supposed to be bended. If you Macbook keyboard breaks you still have warranty. If you are afraid sell it and don't buy anymore. Jesus. Computers break sometimes, like cars and everything else. No piece of tech is 100% secure.

This is a good point. Design was completed long ago and manufacturing has already begun.

So what can they possibly do in one month? Improve the protective layer?

Just a reminder why Apple wouldn't experiment with Tech like this.

It'd be highly unlikely that Apple hasn't experimented with this already. They just haven't put a product on the roadmap. Likely everyone who's anyone has experimented with this. Microsoft probably has a prototype folding screen surface/phone/tablet/don't-call-it-a-kin/maybe-the-ms-band-3 hiding somewhere even though they don't even make smartphone devices anymore.

Well looks like I'm getting the Mate X instead!
The Mate X looks good but I'm concerned about the screen being on the outside and the fact that it's a Huawei phone that's not sold thru US carriers so the support may be non existent here. My next phone will be foldable though, hopefully Samsung is able to go back to the drawing board, fix these issues and come back with a better product. I wasn't going to get gen 1 of the Fold but I was and still am on board for gen 2. Another thing is I'm kinda happy these issues came about now rather then when customers received their paid for products, it's literally free public testing for Samsung to see what issues this phone will have which I'm kinda feeling they should've done anyway. Anyhow I'm still rooting for Samsung and gen 2 of the Fold.

More BS. Samsung makes the OLED screen for the latest iPhones. iFixit tear downs show no other Samsung parts I'm aware of.

Here's Samsung mobile division revenues for the past 5 years as a percentage of total revenues.

  • 2018 - 41%
  • 2017 - 44%
  • 2016 - 50%
  • 2015 - 51%
  • 2014 - 54%

See any trends? Here's what I see from these numbers:

  • The mobile division has steadily declined over the last 5 years, with significant drops in the last 2 years.
  • Even so, the mobile division makes up a large chunk of Samsung revenues. Your claim they could drop their phone line completely "and still be one of the most profitable companies in the world" is 100% BS.

What problems did Samsung have with the Note 8, Note 9, S10 etc.?

Apple couldn't even get AirPower to work, released bent iPad Pros, thermally unstable MacBooks with speakers that could destroy themselves and broken keyboards.
[doublepost=1555955096][/doublepost]

The same point as a folding computer i.e. a laptop. To make higher performance devices more portable.
And how many other problems have OTHER Samsung products have had other than their mobile devices??? If apple was SO bad, why would consumers keep buying their products in record numbers? Why? Because their warranty and customer service/services can’t be matched.

The same thing Microsoft did when Satya Nadella cancelled the Surface Mini literally days before its planned reveal with ready-to-ship inventory on hand. They will be warehoused and likely destroyed.

The already incurred manufacturing expenses are sunk costs. Better to cut their losses now.

That has gotta hit their stock value. Think any heads will roll for this?

And this is why Apple always waits to put out new tech. They wait until they can perfect it.
Apple wait because they don’t have a choice. They don’t have the manufacturing prowess of the likes of Samsung. They need Samsung to make these early prototypes and to get the technology to a point of maturity before they can add their spin.

When we saw the Fold, wasn't the main question-- "How are they going to look after a few hundred openings and closings? (I said, thinking they must have it all solved.) Welp, turns out they didn't have it.

We can now officially stop talking about the new MacBook keyboards for at least a week, right?

What i wonder many of us macrumors experts (aka haters) could have prevented that. What’s wrong with Samsung, are they fearing going to prison camp if not delivering what some ceo psycho asks them?
[doublepost=1555950367][/doublepost]

Yes , because apple saw itself as the golden standard in quality! But relax, they aren’t anymore,so,people won’t go,crazy anymore. Have fun with your AirPower!

You will note, Airpower didn't get shown anywhere, let alone released. They tried to make something difficult work. It charged all the stuff, but there was still risk of overheating because of it.

Better than the Apple approach like with bent iPad Pros claiming it's within tolerance.

Bent iPad is noway same as breaking screens, bent iPads were usable, it was just a cosmetic issue, and they were not defective either.
I can guarantee you that if people actually measure other tablets we can find other tablets in the same range.
Soon some will compare exploding Note 7 to bent iPads and say both Samsung & Apple products have quality issues.

The galaxy fold hasn’t been released.

AirPower was announced at the keynote in 2017. I think there was more potential for harm had Apple release AirPower if the reports of it overheating are true. In the case of the fold, the worst case scenario is that it breaks and Samsung May or May not replace it. So i think because the potential fall out was less severe with the fold this might me why Samsung were willing to try and push forward with the fold whereas Apple were quite rightly more cautious.

Either way I don’t think either Samsung or Apple should be berated. They both tried to do something innovative. They deserve applause for that. Not everything works out. That’s just life.

So $1300 iPads with screen defects is cheap enough to ignore? Got it.
Screen defects is same as breaking screen ?
And these are review units.
Soon people will say exploding Note 7 is same as non flat iPads.
Both are quality issues with electronic gadgets.

LOL, Apple had the sense not to release the AirPower when they realized it wouldn't work. That makes it a lot better than the Fold.
Well Samsung made something that works even if it’s only for a few days. I’m not sure what Apple made because nobody actually saw it. Samsung have also seen sense and decide not to release the fold at this stage.

However this shouldn’t be a tit for tat thing. I don’t think either company should be ridiculed for trying to do something new.

Well, Apple is the most profitable company in the world and Samsung actually makes quite a bit of its profits and margin from smartphones. Samsung is largely a supplier of commoditized products like chips and memory, so they are quite interested in doing well in the luxury smartphone game.

The Galaxy line represents their best opportunity to make said margins, so shipping their $200 phones for market share alone isn't as lucrative.

I just complimented Samsung as an enormous, powerful company, which is why the Fold is a nothingburger for them.
