Refinements and improvements to the display tech. Samsung is very progressive with their displays. Nothing is recycled from one generation to the next without real improvements.

I owe it to Samsung's presence across consumer electronics areas. Their TVs are awesome. I have a 2015 32" Smart 1080p LED I got through Black Friday sales. The picture quality is significantly better than my old Insignia 32" I got in 2012.

That's great for Samsung and all, but they should probably know that I'm not sticking with my iPhone because I think the display is that much better. It's because iOS is far superior to Android and that matters a lot more.

Maybe you could email them? :p

Apple users don't want the best display, we want a display that just works and allows Apple to maximize profits.

True, but Apple would love to say that they own the best display. I'll bet they focus on camera right now but if they move over to 4K displays, the iPhone would be a perfect device for VR adapters. Thats moving forward.

I think Samsung has done really well with the OLED screen technology but I still feel if Apple did not push for Retina we would have larger screens with so-so display qualities.

On the contrary, other makers have long worked on their displays. Apple certainly did not start that trend, nor was it even first at enhancements like "retina". Not by years.

Back in mid 2007, the first iPhone was 320x480 at 163 PPI.

At about the same time, out came the Toshiba G900, which was the first consumer "retina" smartphone (WVGA 480x800 at 312 PPI).

(It also had a fingerprint sensor, 3G radio, Opera browser, and a front-facing camera for video calls.)

Other "retina" displays that predated the 2010 iPhone 4 include the 2008 Sony Xperia X1 (312 PPI) and the 2009 Samsung Jet (301 PPI).

and a bunch of Macs with SD card slots - none of which i've ever had a cause to use.

Photographers I suppose - but the SD card on an phone isn't for them. 1. why would they use it? 2. its not in an easy accessible place on the S7 anyway. Why anyone needs more than 128gb of storage on a phone, especially when there is cloud storage too, is beyond me.

The slot on the galaxy is much easier to find and use that the iPhone! I don't think anyone needs more than 128 (good job if you want at iPhone), but I think most folks a) prefer to not have any limit on memory and b) would rather pay a few dollars for the pleasure rather than $100s Apple charge.

I'm not too bothered if the iPhone screen never changes, works perfectly for my needs, its a mobile screen, I rarely look at it.

I know a phone is primarily to make and receive calls, but don't you do anything else with it that uses the screen? I'm constantly looking at my screen and appreciate how much nicer the Samsung screens are. My phone is my control center where all the external information in my life trickles in.

I agree it's a lovely phone. Stuff like paused video. Great camera. Induction charging and superlative styling and futuristic design makes the iPhone look as old as it really is. Fair enough. Though I'm surprised they made it so visually similar. Still, I don't mind. Cos my S6 will sell better for the S8 next year. But. Having said all that. Nothing is safe as Apple have found out to their cost with their tardiness in innovating like of yore. It won't take much to turn the tables if the 7S doesn't look like the previous model as it has done for the past three years and starts to lead instead of stagnate. But for now Samsung is on a winning streak. And deservedly so.

Time waits for no man. But will Tim do the same?

I don't think that Apple really worries about being the best on individual specifications. If they can sell 250+ million phones per year, that really isn't important to them.

Apple will do it when practical at scale. Rumors indicate iPhone 7S or sooner. Apple has the whole scale issue. Samsung doesn't need to concern itself with silly things like margins or stock prices.

Which is good for us as consumers. Someone has to push the envelope.

As plenty have said, many don't buy an iPhone for the display. I didn't, or I just as easily could have remained with my S6.

And at the end of the day the Apple displays get the job done well enough to keep consumers happy, but that doesn't mean Samsung displays aren't flat out superior.

Put an iPhone 6S against a Samsung flagship side by side and the iPhone just doesn't compare on a Technical level, or real world appreciable clarity and color.

How do you know? Serious question.

Yeah, but it's also evident that Samsung screens are horribly over saturated. So the technologically superior screens are sort of a waste.
