Are the new Samsung displays still flickering? I can always see from a distance if someone is using a Samsung phone (flickering display) or iPhone (not flickering display).

Its just a phone, i'm not glued to it like a teenager. Its just there for when its useful, I don't "consume media" on it. I text and and listen to music mainly (via bluetooth in the car) the rest of the time I use my Mac.

You should make a trip to Asia, Hong Kong for example- but I bet you can make the same observations in any metropolitan area: a lot of people spend sometimes hours commuting between home and work in public transport and browse the web, watch movies, writing emails.

So yes, good screen quality (probably combined with a screen size bigger than a stamp) is something desirable for many people.

Having said that: I am fine with the screen quality on my iP6s+. And I was ok with the screen on my previous Sony and LG, too.

What I would like to see on MR is an article about an improved display on a nice and shiny new retina 17" MBP :p

But despite what Samsung or other phone manufacturers will push out, Apple won't change the display on this year's phone. The big gig will be the removal of the headphone jack. Phil Schiller will come stage and explaining why it is a good thing that Apple removes functionality and hardware components and charges you more at the same time. :p

Let's be realistic here. Anything that Samsung does first is a gimmick, until Apple does it, then it becomes expected from everyone and is used as a stick to beat other companies up with.

OLED is thinner than LCD, so likely; with that being the only techincal difficulty. Obviously they'd have to rebuild it, which is given.

I think they'll increase the resolution relatively soon, if not on the 7 (doubtful) than on the 8. We're getting to the point of 4k screens on smartphones, and 2k is already starting to become the norm. This year 2K will become even more common, and therefore by the time the iPhone 8 is out, apple will be ~2 years behind. Which for them, is right on schedule.

Plus to be honest, the resolution on the iPhone is ****. It's not really bad, but it's in the mediocre section for sure. The display quality is great, but the resolution is poor.

I don't think it's the resolution that makes the S6 screen great. I'd have given up resolution for battery life, to be honest.

That doesn't excuse the lack of one, lol.

Then buy a phone or tablet with one if its that important. But whatever tool has the least important things you're going to have to give up. Every device clips a compromise.

iOS was designed in a way to not use a file manager. Or you could always jailbreak your device and grab on I think.

Apple moving to oled is inevitable.

I think they are just waiting on the technology to reach the right price point cause at the end of the day Apple is all about the margins.

And by then oled tech will be better as well as cheap.

Personally I just want to see what type battery life an iphone can/will get with an oled display. The iphone already gets pretty good battery life.

I realize that nightshift will help this, but is there a reason iPhone screens can't be turned down further? In pitch black they are way too bright for my taste and I don't think I've ever even had my brightness higher than 50% during the day.

kind of a long workaround but it works settings>general>accessibility>zoom on >zoom region "full screen zoom" >zoom filter "low light" :)

ps if you have a 6s or 6s+ you can use the triple click home option to toggle it when you need to get bright again

And why doesn't samsung have oled tv's out now? only lg and possibly panasonic making them. With sony having the best oled tech but not pushing out tv's to lower the oled price. I NEED A 70" OLED now damnit

Yes "LOL" because you're asking for things and no ones given one good real life use purpose for it. There's already multi file management in Dropbox and iCloud Drive apps.
Sorry to jump in the convo but thought I would share my thoughts. I used to think it might be nice to have a visible file system in iOS but recently I was helping my brother with his Android tablet, trying to help him find his SD card or something, and had to go through the file system. It was bloody excruciating. It felt like going back to Windows XP again. If Apple ever does do something like that I hope they do it better than that convoluted mess. Admittedly it was running 4.4 but that is the version the majority of users are on.

Samsung does have OLED TVs ...

Hate to admit it but Apple has fallen behind when it comes to the screen. Hopefully when they do start using them they blow it out the water...
who cares. it is a small screen and Retina is absolutely perfect. What you see you can print out on A3 from the phone.
I hate over saturated screens. and Im sorry any previous Galaxy sucked.

For me the main advantage would be battery life improvement.

to buy? where
posted 4 hours ago. Samsung may invest billions to make OLED TVs
the only oled samsung made was a 55" and is still going for 7000$ and its a 2013 model. not exactly a LARGE oled for a reasonable price.
I meant they've made them before, but put OLED TVs on the back-burner to work on LCD tech. Glad to see they're investing in OLED again. And yeah nobody should pay that price for 3 year old tech.

me too. when prices come down to lcd prices i will be happy. I still love my panasonic plasma from 2011

Yeah, but it's also evident that Samsung screens are horribly over saturated. So the technologically superior screens are sort of a waste.

You are wrong. And I say that as a S6, S5 and Note 4 owner. Let this myth go.

Futhermore Samsung screens have different settings where the level of saturation and vibrancy is customizable.

Meaning the display is only as saturated as the user wants it to be.

That's how Sony died. Almost died but they lost a lot on top of the mountain.
Far back in 1984 expert Christopher Mead on The Computer Chronicles observed that the Japanese computer industry was falling far behind the US, because of how complicated it was to represent Japanese charakters Kanji graphically. This obstacle was never overcome. As software became more important, Sony was about to die anyway.

Apple will put it in the iPhone 8 or iPhone 8abcdefg and then they'll say they got it "right." Typical. I just want an OLED iPhone...it would look amazing.

I dunno. OLED feels more 'blocky' to me. If that makes sense. There's definitely a clear difference when I look at my Watch compared to my iPhone or iPad - or even my rMBP. OLED has always looked less Retina-y to me, you can definitely discern pixels.

I can't tell if you're being serious... the reason the watch looks blocky is because it is low resolution. High resolution AMOLED does not look blocky, you should go check out the S6 or S7.

By the time Apple starts using OLED, technology will have moved on to something better. What Apple needs to do is be the first to "something better".

so this is THE "OLED" that is supposed to have darker blacks than a CRT, uses less energy than an LCD, and lives for like forever?

I heard about OLED a very long time ago, but last I heard there was one of the colors (blue or green) that dies or changes color too soon making it unreliable? Please update me.

Funny how LCD is considered "unacceptable" now. I recall back in 2001, someone would drool to get the "thin" display that looks like its from the future, over the bulky CRT
