Smart move by Samsung, as they need to win back customers. Undercutting the price of the iPhone is a good move, given that we no longer have subsidies.

Other countries still do.. or have gone to 'Tabs'

us carriers give 'tabs' that you pay off over < 2 years, right?

The best part of Androids is, that the price goes down after a couple of months, can't remember that had happened to Apple.

the worst part about Android is that after a few months a new version of Android is released by google for their own handsets and never makes it to Samsung.

+1 here but I'm hopping no battery issues this time

Since Samsung identified the reason for the Note 7 battery meltdowns, there shouldn't be a problem. BUT, as soon as the 1st person with an S8 has a battery meltdown (like every phone has had, including iPhone), you can bet everyone will be all over it. It's not "if", it's "when".

I'm just about done with iOS and Mac so this might be my time to switch. Most of my equipment is now obsolete, Time Capsule,iMac and MBA. They kept me on iOS. Not a big fan of andriod, but I'm also not a fan of high priced phones either.

I'll have to see what they release.

The "price" of something is not always the sticker price if you use that equipment for productivity purposes. If you use it strictly for personal, consumption use, then the price concern is understandable. For me, using Windows and Android would actually be more expensive over time simply due to the headaches of compatibility and poorly-designed software. I watch my colleagues at work on their Windows computers and it boggles my mind why they put up with such nonsense and over-complicated software interfaces.

I think the bottom line for a lot of people is that they will pay a higher price if the phone warrants it. I've liked some of what Samsung has done the past few years and hope the iPhone finally takes some hints and truly does the redesign that has been rumored.
And let's be honest. The only smart move for Samsung is to undercut the price of the iPhone because it's their best chance to grab more iPhone users who don't like the high pricing.

If the rumors price of the S8 is true Samsung is actually raising the price compared to the S7. They're not trying to undercut the iPhone.

The grass isn't always greener, and in many cases it's turning brown. Good luck moving to Android! I was back on iOS after two months.

Crap OS? Almost 9 out of 10 people around the world have Android, not iOS. Really hard to believe your statement.

That's due to pricing. If you could buy random Chinese phones running iOS for dirt cheap, it would be the other way around. Apple makes all the profits for a reason.

So Samsung is raising prices for their S8's from the S7's. Apple is going to have its expensive iPhone 8, but presumably normally priced, but updated iPhone 7s's.

With Google going after the premium Android market with their Pixel (and better/faster updates of the OS, from what I understand the U.S. unlocked full price S7 still doesn't have the latest version of Android on it), this is a bit of a risk by Samsung raising prices and being more expensive than iPhone's. At what point does this impact their sales? As nice as the S8 looks here, if I was going to get a high end Android phone in the U.S., I'd get a Pixel. JMHO...

If you are ever going to raise the price of a product, the best time is when you can do it when your main competitor raises theirs as well. Even better if yours isn't as large of a price increase.

I love all this "undercutting the price of the iPhone", when neither the next iPhone nor it's pricing have been officially announced :p

Regarding pricing, folks need to keep in mind Samsung, like many Asian based companies, has a tradition of offering freebies as well as generous inclusions (usually adapters for every imaginable need) to sweeten the deal. Even the bargain priced Chinese flagships come with stuff like free preinstalled screen protectors. It's not an undercutting methodology but seems to be part of Asian mercantile customs.

I remember being so confused visiting friends and family in Asia and even now ordering stuff from Asian vendors on Amazon and EBay and having armful of free NICE goodies thrust at me. The merchants, seeing my confusion, explained it was a custom to encourage a positive feeling toward their business.

I was surprised to learn last year when I gave Samsung a try that they've got quite an ecosystem of their own, very marketing oriented where you end up with a lot of deals and free stuff. They cut a lot of deals with carriers, with Amazon and other merchants. Using Samsung pay can earn rewards that are actually practical and useful like credits toward purchases with vendors I'd actually patronize.

Lol, with Samsung my husband and I practically got paid to get our phones. We got my S7 Edge for free. My unlocked S7 was purchased at discount for $500 and came with a free Gear VR headset that I badly wanted (and really enjoy) plus their version of AirPods (okay for free but not worth the price they ask) plus free Gear S2 4G watches for him and for me, free 256GB top quality SD cards for him and for me. And because of the Note 7 recall we got to keep stuff that was packaged in with our Note7s so we had extra chargers, adapters and good quality earbuds.

The phones we ended up with after recalls and loaners were returned have been excellent. Where my iPhones have my Samsungs beat is in iMessage and the overall benefits of iOS over Android. Some would argue that Samsung and Android is better. I'm not here to get into that.

I'm not here trying to sell anyone on Samsung, because there are loads of legitimate reasons to NOT go with them, I just wanted to explain what's built into their pricing structure. It's more than meets the eye.

To be honest, it is a good design form even though I don't like Samsung. But without it, Apple would be lazy.

The OS is available on very cheap devices so its normal more people will use it.

To be honest, I rarely hear people complain about their Android phone. It's a choice they made at the time of purchase, for a reason. Just because you like chocolate ice cream doesn't mean vanilla is crap.

It's not really undercutting when Apple make their price absurd. Surely the Samsung is a &S competitor, not an Edition competitor?

I've bought the gs5,gs6,gs7 all at retail on initial release and every phone has gone up in price after the new one comes out.

people want more premium people will have to pay for it.I still don't get how this title says Samsung is trying to undercut apple.

The phone is MORE money than its last version. For the title to be correct the gs8 needs to cost LESS than the gs7.
