Nah. Some members here have repaired their laptops for blown out speakers, video issues etc.

They most probably did, but the keyboard issues are far more ubiquitous.

Say if you were going to go half-half with a family member and have 3 months left to take advantage of Apple's EDU pricing. Would you buy the 2017 15" quad-core i7 16GB 560X 256GB for ($2000, I'll be spending $1000), 2018 13" quad-core i5 16GB 256GB ($1900), or 2018 15" 6-core i7 16GB 555X ($2200) .

I'm a software engineer and screen size / portability for the 15" is fine with me. When I'm at home, I usually connect my MBP to an external monitor. I'm currently using a 1920x1080 gaming monitor but looking to upgrade to a 4k Ultradewide in the near future. I'm going to start getting into photo editing / maybe video editing in the near future as well, so having dGPU would be nice but isn't necessarily needed.

I plan to sell which ever MBP i get in 2020-2021 to get the new model.

I really don't know what to tell you. I own a "free" 2018 15'', which is a replacement for four failed 2016 model keyboards. I would never buy this laptop today. Nor the 2016, nor the 2018 model. All the time wasted for service, I missed a couple of deadlines because they said it would be 10 days for repairs and in the end it was more like 20. It's just not worth it.

Wait until Tuesday and then reevaluate. iPad 4 came a couple of months after iPad 3. It's not really an option in my opinion but you never know, they might as well show a new keyboard design (not a redesign, hopefully).

Ahh, I heard about that. They are giving free upgrade for major keyboard failures. How has your 2018 model been treating you since? Any heating issues? Hows the 3rd generation KB?

I'm going to wait until October 30th and see what comes out. If not, I'm reading that the 2018 is better than the 2017 15" so, maybe I'll just lean towards the 2018 and then sell it in a few years. Hopefully the keyboard issue isn't as bad as 2017.

Well I simply cannot use this this machine normally, as someone else already stated before. I keep waiting for a keyboard malfunction, I don't carry the laptop around that much anymore, etc. Never before in my life did I have a keyboard fail on me with regular use, nor have I heard this happening to someone else. This is such an embarrassment for Apple.

Personally I like the thin keyboard and the low amount of force needed to actuate the key, I also find it comfortable to type. But then again this is not a keyboard, which is meant to be used.

If the keyboard is that bad, I just don't get how Apple hasn't got sued or forced to conduct an immediate redesign to fix such a problem. I haven't been in the loop in the new MBPs since 2015, so I was not aware of the huge keyboard failure until about a few months ago when I decided to look into upgrading. Such a bummer.

There are a couple of lawsuits in progress. Most probably this is also the reason why Apple presented the 2018 upgrade as "solving the problem of loud keypresses".

Where are you seeing the Dell 13 9370 and X1 Carbon sold out?
The Netherlands. Resellers have no models available AT ALL. Same with Matebook X Pro (the new D series are available). Lenovo site quotes delivery times between 8 days and 4 weeks for NOT built-to-order models.

Correction though, Dell 13 9370 models are back in stock (they weren't this morning, weirdly) except the one I want, 1TB/16GB/4k screen. I imagine macOS should work pretty well on that. Anyway, I still have 19 days to return the herpesMBP, and if the A1989 model turns out to be an update I will give Apple another last chance.

If the lawsuit actually goes through and Apple is forced to fix the MBP KBs (or do something about it), would they be required to fix all three generations of the KB or just the newest (2018) ? Any reliable or actual resources regarding information / status about these law suits? Would love to read up on them. I'll google it in a second.

Do what I did. Gave my mid-2012 MBP to my kid for school work and found an early-2015 MBP 13" in pristine condition on eBay. 2015 is as far as I go with Apple unless Tim "The Crook" Cook and Jony "Insane" Ive come to their arrogant senses.

Thanks, but no way am I buying a now nearly four year old computer at any price, especially an inflated one because people think they are worth gold because of the keyboard. At that point I may as well just keep my 8 year old computer or waste more money on it.

The Lenovo status here may be due to them having a facility in Whitsett, N.C. The stock is probably showing for what is available from that facility.

The XPS 13 9370 is a really nice computer and if you don't do video conferencing, as you have mentioned you don't, then the nose cam isn't a big deal. Better a gratuitous up nostril shot than repeated keyboard failures. Some design flaws are more critical than others :)

I got a MacBook Pro 15 2018 about nine days ago to replace my old and beloved MacBook Air. Yesterday I noticed that some keys and spacebar were getting a bit “sticky” when the MacBook was under heavy load, and tiny specs of dust were already building up around some other keys making a bit harder to press, so all in all I decided to return the MacBook and ask for a full refund. I won’t admit any sort of failure or inconsistency on a keyboard of a machine that cost me 2900 euros, no way! It is such a pity because other than that I was really eonjoying the power of the machine. I love Apple and I am all in their ecosystem but for now I cannot recommend anyone to buy a machine that no longer seems to be realiable as once Macs were. So now I am back to my 5 years old MBA and although it cannot handle everything so smoothly as the new MBPs, it is a machine I can rely on when I am out and about.

I've been using mine for a while, typing up some long winded nonsense papers but I have yet to see the same issue you had. Maybe you had a faulty device?

It could very well be, but after reading what people are going through with their keyboards it doesn’t look promising to be honest. It is first time I get disappointed with a Mac and I use Macs since 2004.

The 3rd generation really makes a difference when it comes to how the keys feel and sound. I fell in love with the butterfly keyboard's *feel* when I got the 20116 rMB, and this is really much better...

That double 1 is not my typo. AAAHHHHH!!!!!

I wonder whether the fact all models of Matebook X Pro, X1 Carbon, and Dell 13 9370 are sold out at the moment means an imminent Whiskey Lake refresh?

Had to visit the Microsoft Store today and gave the MateBook X Pro a good looking at. What a beautiful machine. Gorgeous display, thin bezel, keyboard reminds me of the 2015 era MBP.

That looks nice and is modelled after the mbp that everyone actually wants - the 2015 mbp!
I've been wanting to upgrade my mbp for a while now but I won't buy any of the new mbp designs.
Hmm.. Maybe it's time to go back to Windows. Last time I used Windows was Vista!

Hardware looks nice but I just can't deal with Windows. I have a new Windows laptop for work (Lenovo) and Windows just continues to suck. It looks nicer than ever (UI wise) but it is still buggy quite frequently. It is very frustrating. Mac OS is king for me. I don't see me ever being able to abandon Mac OS, no matter how many noise there is on Mac OS hardware these days.

You and me both. Last time I used Windows was XP up until last year when I picked up a Surface Pro. After 4 rounds with the current MBP and losing, I am dipping into the Windows well again.

Today, I was sitting at my favorite coffee shop watching all of the people working away on their laptops. The MBA is by far the most popular device at this joint; students, professionals, retirees....you name it. People just love this computer. It is the best computer I have ever owned.

I keep thinking... why Apple why? The MBA is an incredibly successful design that is plenty thin. I'll bet not one MBA customer ever complained that: "Hey, its a great computer. Very reliable and priced right. But, I wish it was 1mm thinner. How about an unreliable butterfly mechanism to reduce the thickness of the lower case?" Now, if we are lucky enough to get a new MBA next week, it will almost certainly sport this crappy butterfly keyboard mechanism. Apple is committed to this design. Otherwise, if they release a new laptop with the classic keyboard design, it will be an admission of failure.

At this point, my only hope is they just give the existing MBA an old fashioned refresh; updated processor and internals.......maybe a 1080p IPS display (not retina). Frankly, I would be very happy with this. But, it's a long shot. Not going to happen.

Instead, Apple will scrap the current MBA, and give us either: (1) a new wedge shaped low spec $1,299 13 inch model with butterfly keyboard (replace the failed ntb MBP), or (2) a rMB with 2017 specs and 128GB of storage for $999. Or, we might get 1&2. Either way, I believe we are stuck with the butterfly keyboard on Mac laptops for the foreseeable future.

Edit: A third option is that Apple just throws its hands in the air (no pun intended), and says; the MBA is discontinued, and if you want an entry level laptop, then buy a new iPad pro. I don't necessarily agree with this approach, but it seems to be how Apple is operating these days.

Maybe we should just stop calling it "the classic keyboard".

It's the keyboard, that works and has worked for decades. Butterfly keyboard is the keyboard, not meant for typing.

Apple is fond of tacking Pro on to the end of everything they make these days. How about a decent keyboard with good key travel and pitch and bring back the function keys and offer it as a Keyboard Pro option :)

with all the bad things that is happening to windows 10 these days, with the issues that i had with matebook x pro like trackpad rattle, or screen hinge too loose two times the display just felt on the keyboard ,and for my taste the keyboard was too hot when i was doing something more than light usage is still a BIG no go...i will try again in 2-3 years

I believe all Magic Keyboards have standard scissor mechanism.

Magic Keyboard combines a sleek design with a built-in rechargeable battery and enhanced key features. With a stable scissor mechanism beneath each key, as well as optimized key travel and a low profile, Magic Keyboard provides a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.

(from Apple.com)

Stable mechanism!

Be aware that also these newer keyboards (standard for iMacs) don't work properly – before the end of guarantee period (Apple Care) we changed 3 of them without any result – the same problems as ever (sometimes one sometimes two letters lacking (other saw and heard you were typing right way) – in our analysis we think this is a failure of Bluetooth transfer to the Mac – this we know now for 3 years and no change in technology what would be easier to solve as the butterfly disaster :(

So we changed our keyboards to the older ones.

Finally this is in our opinion the same mess like the butterfly mechanism scandal in MB and MBP !
