This is crazy. Now every single Apple's laptop has a ticking bomb that is the keyboard.
I'm not sure why you're surprised - I'm not taking a shot at you, but rather just point out that the T2 chip and the keyboard are Apple's baby. Of course the butterfly keyboard will make its way into the other models.

What IS surprising is they chose not to include the TouchBar. If it is as great as they claimed in 2016, why not roll it out on the other models? I think this will only fuel the mentality by developers to focus on other aspects of their apps and not embrace the TB

I was disappointed to not see the TB included, although that might be a cost issue since they seem to have had trouble keeping the price low.

Out of curiosity, what apps are you seeing that don't support the TB? It's so trivial to add in Xcode (you don't even need a Touchbar MacBook), there really is little reason for developers not to add it. I think all the apps I use have Touchbars.

Might it be another indicator that the problem isn't as widespread as some think... ?

I don't use the TB so I can't tell you for sure, but I fired up Lightroom classic and that's not using it., Text Expander, Snagit, 1Password, gotomypc. Admittedly some of those apps (1Password & Text Expander) are older apps since they're now on subscriptions and I don't want to pay a monthly fee to use those.

Interesting, thanks. Strange that Lightroom doesn't support it since Photoshop and Illustrator both do, and that seems like a perfect app to use it with all the "hidden" shortcuts. 1Password & TE do support it now (I hate it when apps switch to subscriptions).

I think the Touch Bar is dead for the next revision of MacBook Pros.

I could see them using all their remaining touch ID component stock on the lower end models just released and making the MacBook pros have Face ID be a selling point moving forward.

I could also see them not only removing the Touch Bar but not putting the keys back up there and just removing that row completely. Sounds insane but you just watch… Don’t be surprised

when they will do that, they will remove the physical keys all the way, for an second e-ink

Tim Cook, 2019: "We've fixed what's wrong with the function keys (we hate them), and what's wrong with the Touch Bars (you hate them), and are proud to announce: 'Siri Keys'!

Now, just say, 'Hey Siri, F1'.

Oh, but 'F2' doesn't work, because we don't allow swearing at Apple."

Thing is though has anyone actually had significant issues with the new keyboard as it has been a few months and I dont think there have not been any major reports on the new keyboard issues. I have the new 2018 macbook pro and I have not faced any issues but I have only had it for a few weeks.

Oh they absolutely have… Just dig around on the forum and you’ll find it

Plenty of topics. Also the developer of Better Touch Tool had a 2018 keyboard failure.

Doubt it. It specifically says gen 3, which is what the 2018 MBP was advertised with. Looks like they're here to stay unfortunately.

Got a Genius bar appointment tomorrow, the double spacing was driving me nuts today. Maybe I should of bought AC+, too late now unfortunately...
Small update, went in today and they're just giving me a new laptop since I guess they're not repairing the new ones yet? That's fine with me. I'm also able to buy AC+ for it as well, so that's a double plus.

Sweet Jesus, this thread is making me depressed. I need to replace my 2016 MBP which is on its third keyboard/topcase assembly, and I have really hoped that the 3rd generation butterfly keyboard is more reliable than the 2nd gen. What am I to do now - buy a ThinkPad?

Get a Mac Mini and a portable 220V battery

my "i" started acting up, on top of audio issues in logic on top of screen flickering.
I wish i never bought this machine - I'm not kidding, if i can get it return by any chance possible I'm gettiing my money back asap.

edit: lol "i"'s.

Usually when Apple get it wrong, they get it right the second time. Surprised Gen 3 is still more prone to failure than a sub £200 laptop I could get off the shelf anywhere. A pity really, will really hurt their reputation.

It’s just crazy to think that if they had the old keyboard and no Touch Bar - this machine would have had universal acclaim, like it would be Top 3 laptop if not Top 1 as a given, as a recommendation on every tech site. No one would be like “oh ffs function keys” or “I wish they changed this keyboard”. The only complaint would have been ports.

Unfortunately, lugging around a Mac mini is not an option for me.

Recently I decided to move a bit higher up the food chain and enrolled into a part-time computer science programme at our local university. I need a laptop to bring with me to labs (it's actually a requirement for some of the classes) and I'm not too keen on bringing my current MBP with me. In fact, I'm not too keen on using it at all — previously I had some very embarassing situations when I could not take notes in important meetings because of stuck keys. Nothing worse than frantically trying to "unstick" the goddamn keyboard while the whole room is watching you with interest. Because of this experience, I have zero trust in this machine and its successors.

I have been able to mostly replace it with an iPad pro/Smart keyboard combo for my personal stuff, but it's a no go for coding classes.

get a 2015 refurb. This machine is unfortunately not reliable. My "i" started acting up after a month of purchase, and I use a keyboard cover which i dust everytime before putting it on the laptop (and i dont keep it on when i close it)

I use Xamarin/React Native for cross platform apps and also work on Angular projects so a MacBook is ideal, but the keyboard scares me to the bone, so much so that it seems that it’s 60:40 that I end up with a Windows laptop by next month rather than a MacBook, and I got to try find some cloud solution/hackintosh for iOS deployment...

The machines are beautiful, but I need a guarantee that they remain functional and don’t hinder my productivity.

I was not aware of those issues with 2018 MBPs. I guess I should steer well clear of them.

I'm banging my head trying to get it returned. It's been a wild ride of disappointment.

If I get it return i don't know what I'll get. I just hope I can get rid of this one.
