Where Apple targets the high-end very broadly, and Samsung/Pixel/OnePlus seem to blanket all price points with a focus on mid-range devices... Sony seems to have consciously made the baffling decision to market exclusively to a very high-end, very niche market. I guess there's some value in having a loss leader, prestige product in your catalog, but a company so enormous and market-share focused like Sony? I really don't understand it. Apple gets a lot of flack for gold watches, or ultra expensive workstations.... but Sony sells a $3700 MP3 player. What the heck is that? Who is it for? Do they sell even a hundred of them a year?
Yup you're spot on. Really wish they would being back something that was in that middle ground, their handsets really were great back five years or so ago.

lightning was first and usb-c was an improvement. eventually lightning will be dropped as usb-c is better. not much of a story. The real story is why pay 1000 for an iPhone vs 300 for a samsung android when both have reception dropouts. I have so many friends with top end iPhones that suffer the same as me with cell tower reception issues and I pay under 30% their price.
I use the phone function the least on my phone. You buy a phone for the software and a few other items that are different for each person.

Better buy a rubber bung to stop the usb c port going faulty. My friends last 3 Samsungs no longer charge via usb c as the ports all failed. Seems fine on laptops etc but pocket fluff is apparently an issue for them. 🤷‍♂️
In testing the port is fine but having the fragile effect tongue on the expensive part is just such dumb engineering. Thank goodness for wireless and induction charging

Yup! 😂 For me the camera is the biggest "justification" I look at in the latest Apple handsets. I had a 12 Pro before my 14 Pro, and to be honest I could have easily held on to it for another year or two at least, but the camera in the 14 was just such a solid upgrade I decided to go for it. I feel it was worth it to me personally, I've been able to take some seriously nice pictures that I wouldn't have gotten on the 12 Pro. It's so good I didn't bother using my DSLR while I was in New York last year.

I suppose the fact it can make phone calls is just taken for granted now.

Google has expanded on its #BestPhonesForever ad campaign with a new video titled "Spa Day" in which it pokes fun at the upcoming iPhone 15's implied lack of headline features and its expected adoption of USB-C in lieu of a Lightning port.

In the ad, an iPhone and a Pixel are depicted relaxing in a tranquil spa amid towels and candles, idly chatting to one another with their rear cameras covered by cucumber slices.

"Pixel, a spa day was the perfect idea with all these launch events coming up," says the iPhone, lamenting that the launches "just keep getting harder." After fondly recalling the applause that its slide-to-unlock feature elicited 16 years ago, the iPhone continues:
"Rest up for October 4," reads the ad's tagline, in reference to Google's upcoming Pixel event, where it is expected to unveil a new Pixel 8 lineup, a new Pixel Watch, and potentially Pixel Buds updates.

Invites for Google's event went out the day after Apple invited the media and others to watch its iPhone 15 "Wonderlust" event on September 12.

Since the iPhone 5, Apple has kept the Lightning port on the ‌iPhone‌, despite much of the industry moving to USB-C. However, after coming under pressure to comply with new regulations implemented in Europe, Apple is swapping the Lightning port on iPhone 15 devices for a USB-C port.

With this transition, the Mac, iPhone, and iPad will all finally charge using USB-C, allowing Apple customers to charge their devices with what has effectively become the de facto universal charging standard for consumer mobile and laptop devices.

Google's software is so advanced compared to Apple's that it's easy for them to take the Michael knowing they have the ammo to back it up.

Apple drip feed nonsense and try to sell it as a feature.

One of the biggest features this year is that my phone won't keep correcting everything to duck or ducking hell.

Nice one, Craig! What's next years biggie?

Funny commercial and what's even more striking is that LARGE slice of cucumber fits perfectly inside the iPhone's rear camera. Apple really needs to do something about the rear camera, it's becoming a borderline tumor. A design change would be welcomed.

Periscope cameras can't come soon enough.

The Pixel's are probably the only Android devices that are worth having at the moment.

Good to see adverts poking fun at competitors too, but done in such a way that's actually funny and in good taste - take note Samsung.
Dare I say they should take a galexy of notes?

I believe a lot of people's gripes come down to "innovation", something Apple used to be at the forefront with. Even though Android-based companies struggle with the same issue and we've certainly reached a point of maturation/stagnation with phones, Android still leads in that category (outside of SoC, anyway). Unless you have copious amounts of disposable income or just want the latest and greatest, the improvements just aren't there year-over-year to justify plopping down $1,000+ every year on what amounts to mainly software improvements or exclusives for the average consumer. If you look at the yearly cycle between the 12PM>13PM>14PM, is there really anything between those 3 years of launches that are going to cause excitement for the average consumer? I say no. I'm cautiously optimistic about what the 15PM will bring with potential battery improvements, a proper telephoto, USB-C etc, but I wish Apple was a little more aggressive in adopting some of these hardware improvements that are otherwise old hat with the competition. Not to mention, we would still be getting lightning phones this year, 11 years after launch if the EU action didn't occur. Apple's saving grace has been the ecosystem and that Android, although much better than it used to be, is still insufferable to comfortably switch to if you have any reliance on said ecosystem.

Nah, they would have switched to USB-C soon enough. Even Steve Jobs said Lightning was the new connector "for the next decade" when he introduced it, and that decade is up. They had already migrated to USB-C in iPads and MacBooks have been using it for charging for some time now. It was going to happen with iPhones also. Just the increased transfer speeds for those who need it is reason enough. They just get to deflect blame to the EU when the inevitable outcry comes from the segment that hates change.
Ahem ... it's rumored to still be USB 2.0 speed (except "maybe" the pro)

The "tongue" and mounting is fragile on alot of other manufacturers phones. It can be done right, it's just more expensive.

Apple's USB-C ports are supported by a cast metal frame surrounding it on both sides. 👍

Samsungs on the other hand is a fragile surface mount plastic affair.🤮

The Pixel appears to be better than samsungs, but still a flappy plastic breaky-offie tongue.

Right. So for the pros who need the faster transfer speeds...

And bear in mind that it's just a rumor, many of which don't pan out. It makes no sense for Apple to deliberately hobble the transfer speeds, at least not that severely.

I only use android. Mostly Samsungs. I just got an a54 from sammie today. cost 300 I used the savings to get wait for a Mac mini m2 pro with 16gb and 1tb ssd. The savings I get by using mid their samsung phones rather than 3x the price iPhones allows me to keep getting Mac mini upgrades for free.

Spending 1399 for an iPhone max with 256gb and no sd cards. the screen = 6.7
or 283 for a Samsung A54 with 128gb storage and a 512 gb card. the screen = 6.4

I saved about 1000 bucks. and got my new Mac mini.

I have multiple friends with top of the line iPhones that don't work better than a mid grade samsung.

Mostly due to poor cell tower networks. So spending an extra 1000 for the high end apple is buying a rolls Royce to ride on poorly paved roads.

Here I am typing on a new Mac mini cost was 1249 with the 100 dollar gift card rebate.
and my samsung 283 plus 40 bucks for a 512gb samsung sdcard grand total 1572

and the apple fan boy has a iPhone pro for 1399
with no Mac mini.

It is an easy choice to make.
Lol.... why do I *have* to buy the latest greatest flagship? I've got an iPhone 12 (not max, not pro) and it works fine. I may get an iPhone 15 when they release this year, or a 14 if the price is appealing, only because I have an iPhone 11 that needs to be traded in while it still has some value left in it among other reasons.

I drive Toyota Camrys. They are boring cars which are incredibly reliable, require little maintenance and seem to last forever. If you want performance, styling, features, there are a lot of other cars out there but a lot of people appreciate something that just gets the job done reliably. And that's where the iPhone is - it's basically a commodity. I really don't care about new features, how good the camera is, etc. My main concerns are does it work in the ecosystem and is it light and small enough to go running with.

I'm tempted to try a pixel phone for a while but I'm already invested in Apple (Watch, AirPod Pro) and a lot of my family are iPhone. The AI and photo tech look good. being able to ditch WhatsApp and move to RCS (which Apple is ignoring) would be good.
Just curious why, if a lot of your family is on iPhone, why WhatsApp is a major concern for you? Also, RCS isn't universally supported by Android, only the relatively latest models that still have support do. So those family members not on iPhones have recent model Androids that all support RCS?

Google will be the first one to watch the Apple Wonderlust Event. In addition, they can’t wait to can’t wait to copy a feature or two from the iPhone 15 line up. 👀
Yeah because that’s how it works
Apple keynote of new feature then google copy the feature after 3 weeks
These things are worked on in advance Apple have taken stuff from google before.

That list is pretty short and pales in comparison to the list from Google.

You might say Google copied everything...

Still rocking a Xr here. Still works great. I'm going to upgrade to the new one, and I suspect I'll feel like I'm coming out of the stone ages, but that's ok... I've somehow managed to survive just fine.

Google is not wrong. But the thing about Google is they’ll sell your info and don’t respect privacy like Apple does.

Apples biggest attractions have always been their user friendly interfaces, “virus free” type of cpus (back in the day), cool designs and innovative tech. All of which can’t be said in the last handful of years. But I get it, technology can only make large strides for so long until it plateaus. ingenuity and business can sometimes get in the way of each other

Competition is great!! And yeah, so true, finally getting USB-C.. should have been there at least 3 years ago!!! Apple gotta get with the times quicker.
It was always about money with the lightning cable system. Proprietary design meant money for every third party manufacturer. We can refer to the Apple vs. Epic games dispute lol

Steve Jobs wouldn’t have let Apple fall this far from the tree 😢😭
