So what are you all using an iPad Pro for? Curious.
Use mine for mostly for drawing and illustration (Procreate, Art Studio Pro) using the Apple Pencil. Also spreadsheets (Numbers). Much of the rest involves web-based use (browsers and apps) for Etsy, Shopify store, etc.

Of course email, and YouTube too.

Revised my workflow around the iPP so I can work anywhere as I travel a lot for my business. But also just for working anywhere I want around the house. Super small charger, way more battery life, way more portable.

Lugging around my old MacBook Pro means I have to eject external drives, bring the Wacom tablet and cables with me, unplug and lug around a bulky charger, etc. Even before the iPP I just ended up never moving the laptop anywhere because it was such a chore.

I have an older iPP, prior to the 2021 release. Will likely upgrade to get more power, new battery, more storage space, and take advantage of wherever trade-in value it might have. If trade-in too low I'll wait for another version and keep this one for something.

Big fan of everything it can do and the amazing level of portability it offers. Barely touch my MBP at all these days.

Anyone else just... done with iPads since the Apple Silicon Macs came out? I find I have zero desire to bring my iPad on trips anymore. Granted, it's a 2016 iPad Pro so getting up there in years but I find myself getting along entirely with my iPhone and 2021 Macbook Pro 14.

Right? I mean what will the M2 iPad be able to do the M1 can't (because of the processor). The OS is so limited the hardware upgrades are pretty useless at this point.

That was interesting; thank you for sharing. I have found the opposite and far prefer the MBP, but that may be because I have not owned a modern iPad, just the now lame v1 iPad Air and a v1 iPad before that. It sounds like I need to invest the time and effort to learn the iPP.

Thanks! Not an experience I was expecting especially before I reached 40! Would not recommend, went from diagnosis to surgery in less then 12 days.

I'm in DevOps, so I most live in the terminal on 90% of my day to day tasks. I have a version of code-server spun up internally as well with a work approved sync solution which serves well for when I'm on the iPad and neovim/helix won't cut it. I haven't tried jumpdesk but I haven't really needed to either. Over the years at the company I've written a dozen cli tools to bypass the need for even a web browser most of the time.

I'm 99% Linux in the house, except for an old Surface Pro 3 that is mounted in my kitchen to act as adhoc media server for my audio setup and running grocy for inventory/recipes/etc.

The 2018 12.9 has served me well, before the surgery I still used it for work but mainly for notes/etc. it had a permanent location between my split keyboard for work, and used it as my Todoist/Jira/Notes view. It wasn't until after my surgery that I really started using it for work and I have to say after a couple weeks of adjustment to my workflows I don't think I could go back to just working out of my office. Even if the pain left tomorrow, I'm finding in more productive with how I have things setup.

For instance, if I need to switch to a location where my iPad is, I'll use the time for the iPad for more general tasks. Actually documenting my code, writing public documentation, reading manuals and exporting my notes to obsidian, etc. That way when I get back to one of my other devices and continue developing I have a clearer picture. It's made me a better developer and has helped keep me in check with some of the more mundane administrative duties I use to dread.

Not that the iPad can't do my full work load, it actually can really well. However I find since I'm switching locations anyways, switch tasks as well gives my mind a reset and avoid's those moments where an interruption cause a "Ok, wtf was I doing" moment.

Sorry about your triple disc fusion in your neck - ouch! Hang in there!
I use Jump Desktop and have found it to be very smooth and fluid going between my different devices. It works very well on the iPad Pro. I updated from a 2018 12.9” iPad Pro to the 2021 12.9” iPad Pro and there’s not much of a difference, but I do look forward to using stage manager with an external display. The 2018 is still a very capable device. It will be interesting to see how the M2 will make a further difference, since the 2018 - 2021 models are already more than adequate for anything iPad OS and the current apps can do now. I’m thinking the M2 update from the M1 on the iPad Pro will be similar to the MacBook Pro 13” M2 update - same look and feel with a modest performance update.

Well we will agree to disagree then. I feel its pointless to keep upgrading the chip if it can't take advantage of anything extra anyways. Update other parts of it, better battery life, better camera, better display, new features etc. The SOC was the last thing these needed updated. Apples gone this route for their watches and nobody complains because they perform great still and get to enjoy new features

Have fun
Anyone who has ever designed something, like a construction project, a complex spreadsheet or a magazine ad has found that as you revisit the project with successive iterations you improve the design. Less kludge and more elegance.

Designers of Apple's SoC are no different. M2 is better than M1, tech moves on. A good thing. An app developer sees enhanced capability and gets an idea, and things evolve. It is the way tech works.

Crickets on the Mac mini. I don't want to pay $2000 for the studio, there should be something between the studio and the two year old m1 mini.
I expect (just my personal guessing) that we will soon see an M2 Mini as an upgrade of the M1 Mini, perhaps in two flavors and/or keeping the M1 also for sale. IMO the more heavily featured Intel Mini probably should not be replicated using M2 because we now have the (awesome) Studio at the higher end of midrange headless desktop.

Ummmm Who CARES. For the 1st time in my life I’m tired && bored of Apple Products 🥲 where is Steve Jobs Timmy done messed your entire company up over $$ & greed
You seem to have written many comments for someone who doesn't care. I am looking forward to the M2 as an upgrade to 2nd gen 12.9". Use it so much, am only on the laptop when necessary.

Macs don’t support Netflix downloads for watching videos on trips.

Yup, iPads still have their place for certain things for sure, but yea I definitely use mine a lot less now that I have a Mac. But I do travel a lot and definitely enjoy it for downloading shows and content consumption. Also love putting it up in my window sill at home in the kitchen while im cooking dinner and watching shows.

I used to use it more on the couch but now that I have the MacBook Air, I honestly prefer it on the couch over the iPad.

Amazingly many who confuses iPads with Macs in this thread.
I think that’s the point. Line between MacOS and iPadOS is becoming more transparent. Certain use cases why do I need to carry a traditional laptop when I can have two in one. Of course Apple fears it may cannibalize their Mac lines so they are very careful to avoid giving certain features away such as true multitasking.

The marketing for the iPad is sure as hell effective.
I got a 2022 Air when it released, only to realise I didn't really need an iPad and sent it back.

I'm still a big fan of targeted operative systems.
An iPad is a touch first device, a computer is a pointer device (usually paired with much larger screen).
Simple as that.

I respect it, but I don't get how people want macOS on a 12" device for some real productivity.
I mean, to the level of productivity for which iPad OS isn't enough, I suspect even 12" wouldn't be enough.

I like the fact iPad OS is made specifically for the iPad.
Same thing with macOS; I welcome more features from iPad but I still want the classic desktop experience.

By the way a merge will never happen, as Apple sells many more devices this way.
Why merge iPad and macOS when you can sell people both a mac and an iPad?

Seems that the M2 update for Macbook Pros will come later. Or maybe, it won't come at all, since M1 Pros are still kings of the hill? It is difficult to bring these machines to their knees.

I’m somewhat of the reverse.

I had an MBA, then when the M1 iPad came out I got it and used it to the point where I gave the MBA to my daughter because the iPad did all I needed.

That said, I ordered the new MBA a few days ago. As much as I love the iPad and it still is my primary device, it is not yet a 100% independent device and requires a Mac for a few things, and the Mac is still better at a few tasks I’m doing more frequently lately. My aging 27” iMac is already obsolete, so this will probably be the last time I buy a Mac.

Regardless, my Apple ecosystem is still used in the following order of precedence:

1. Watch & AirPods Pro combo: First strike devices that are almost always on me: Calls, notifications, messages, music, health & fitness

2. iPhone: Also always on me, used for when the Watch is too small for the task, car navigation and music playback, photos, on-the-go-computing-when-my-iPad-is-not-here device.

3. 12.9” iPad Pro & Pencil combo: My primary computer, entertainment, music creation & management, document, photo, and video repository (both local storage and iCloud), bills and notes device. My true Personal Computer.

4. M2 MBA: Soon to become (just ordered it) my iPad management device and backup. Also used for the rare, outside-of-work productivity (I have a company-issued PC for work).

Because they could sell a lot more iPads. If you’re apple you want to sell the device that keeps on giving. iPad. App Store.

Without the merge i don’t buy an iPad period because iPadOS by itself is a joke.

Not seeing a good reason to upgrade. Plus, I just got a replacement iPad from Apple yesterday so it's in pristine cosmetic condition, not that mine was banged up or anything, and has a brand new battery :D I'm good for another year and a half at least :)

Maybe if the new models had OLED then I'd jump even if it was only the larger model. I'm more than happy with the screen quality during normal usage but watching movies with dark scenes is not great.

Hopefully this also means that the new M2 Mac Mini is just a matter of days away. I haven't owned a Mac in exactly 10 years so I'll be happy to come "Back to Mac" :D
