It's a shame that this will be mostly niche product for Apple since non-sim plans are almost non-existent outside of US.

The red dot sticks out like a sore thumb. Anyone else hopes it gets removed for Series 4?

well the red dot has been around since the very first version in 2015, only Tim appear has it with stainless steel. the rest is gold one and it cost $12k+

was everyone wants it back then? well it goes mainstream today.

Another thing, maybe Tim test himself cellular tech back day, that will be an interesting story.

Can someone advise if third party notifications come in when on LTE and away from the watch. Do you receive Facebook , WhatsApp , CNN, Gmail notifications etc

In a boardroom? Unless you are at a tech company I assure you the red dot won't be the reason your watch is sticking out like a sore thumb.
Go on amazon and people are already selling watch crown stickers
[doublepost=1506256215][/doublepost]The only issue I have with the watch is... that you can use Facebook on it still, only get notifications, so to say you don’t need your phone really is false cause you need to still check Facebook

Well, I only assumed that a person would be a child first, before a fully grown adult.
And no, they won't be interested on something that belongs well to the past.
Just like you don't see them wearing these pocket watches.
People move with the time...... they don't tend to stay on the past.
These watches will be a thing of collectors.

The reality is that traditional watches will be around for years and for future generations to come, regardless of the smartwatch industry's growth. As for pocket watches, oh I've seen them but not commonly, even though I suspect the ones that do would be today's hipsters which you probably would've come across oftenly. And if you think they don't tend to stay on the past, find a hipster and ask them if they do ( you know. The ones with handlebar moustaches, glasses, man buns, beard, etc. ). They're bound to 'curate' what's cool in the past and the present.

Also, if you go to Steampunk Festivals, chances are good that certain cosplayers will carry pocket watches to reflect that genre.

The 'pocket watch' of today is really the smartphone itself.

The Apple Watch will NEVER, EVER be a heirloom piece. EVER. Digital devices are not meant to last forever. Mechanicals, however, can last a long time. After all, you're not going to be able to use an S3 Apple Watch 25 years from now and hand it down to the next person. That thing will be extremely obsolete by then and passe. It'll end up in a junkyard or environmentally stripped for recycling. Mechanical watches in the future can still be repaired and serviced.

Another example of a lasting mechanical is the B-52 Stratofortress bomber built since the 1950s. One of the oldest planes in that lineup still exists and works. It was flown in 2016, the last time I heard. But by 2045, they will be replaced by new models.

If you want an heirloom that has value either monetary or sentimental, you gotta go with a hand crafted mechanical watch. I know a guy who's a professional DJ and about in his 30s who wears a Rolex. It's all about the bling and appreciation of a well crafted accessory.

Apple Watch is NOT bling. Dig? It's just a digital toy just like your iPhone or Android.

Digital is temporary but a mechanical is immortalized.

Well you see , that’s not how most people it to work unless you love very poor battery life. It should be able to connect to wifi’s with good internet access and those you trust as an alternate. It should use the most efficient connection it can find to get the job done

Also, in some buildings and locations like my work place and my cottage, LTE is very bad, what then?
With all do respect to you and a few others, who want to carry the watch and your phone at all times, you should have purchased the wifi only watch! Apple technical has advised myself/others that if ones phone is turned off or one leaves the phone behind the default should be that the phone should switch to LTE by default and not try to connect to any wifi network whether authorized or unauthorized! That only makes sense since if you do not have the phone with you or it is turned off how are you able to receive calls? This is primarily an LTE smart watch with the ability to accept wifi connections!

Nah it’s really not. It doesn’t have the battery life to be that yet. And it’s not being marketed in that way.

I’m also still confused as to why you can’t make calls when your watch is connected to WiFi

Have a look at this link....

Lovely video. But at the end he says that walking around the neighborhood is a great example of why a cellular watch is useful because you don't have your phone with you. But he says this while wearing a backpack. I'm going to guess that this guy (and all of us on the site) would never go anywhere both with a backpack but also feel like throwing our phone in said backpack or a pocket is too much hassle or extra weight.

I can only think of one instance for me where I'd leave phone at home but LTE watch would be useful and that is when going to the beach. Jogging is another that folks bring up, but I jog with a jogging belt that contains keys, money and ID, so adding the phone in there is no problem. (And I don't jog very much or very far.)

it does have the battery life for lite users, heavy users would utilize wifi more often. It is being marketed as a device that can function on its own away from your phone for hours/ or the day!

I disagree. Anyway...you haven’t answered my second point. What are you losing with having a WiFi connection? What makes you think you can’t make calls? Did you look at the link I posted?

Personally I think the red crown looks pretty nice, however wouldn't it be better if the crown, or just the tip of it, was interchangeable and people could pick whatever color they want, like the bands? Make it screw into the crown and maybe snap-lock. Apple could make money on people spending $30+ a pop buying crown tips to match their watch bands. And in that case, the one you get with the watch would be some more neutral color that goes with each body style.

Stickers were available before this watch came out if I am not mistaken.

thank you for the link...but again if I wanted a watch that utilizes the wifi I would have purchased the wifi only watch! I purchased the LTE watch as I bet the majority of others did, to be able to be free of once phone while on LTE!

The Apple Watch will NEVER, EVER be a heirloom piece. EVER. .

And it does not need to be. It will only be something that millions of people will wear because of the functionality and that's the reason it could become popular.
As for the people who think wearing mechanical watches will make them look rich and classy, oh well....... whatever floats their boats.

I am not sure he did! Read his post again, disposable, dress and something to pass on through the generations. (Just in case you don’t understand, that means a family heirloom rather than a version of a smart watch!)

The Apple Watch falls into the first category
But, he said the Apple Watch was none of those. And, if what grandpa said was true, it’s only partially true. If not an heirloom, all watches are disposable at some point. “Dress” watches quit working or become outdated looking. People spend a couple to a few hundred dollars on “dress” watches and only wear them once in a while.

If you can get a S2 cheap, I would buy it, S0 is so freak slow compare to the S2&3.

I agree. I love my S2 that I got on a great sale at BestBuy. My next upgrade will likely be the S4 when it comes out. LTE just isn't that interesting to me with the current battery life limitations, and the S2 is plenty fast right now.

Question.. to use wifi calling on the watch, does the phone need to be on? if so then I have just proved my point! one is still attached to the phone? the whole point of an LTE watch is to use it away... from the phone!

But there are no benefits from using LTE when WiFi is available, only negatives. So, very sensibly, Apple decided that the watch would prioritise WiFi connections where available.

This watch will absolutely not work as you would like it to so I would return it if I were you.

Answer. No it does not.

Please read the article I linked to. The info you see is in the opening paragraph.

“If your cellular carrier offers Wi-Fi calling, you can use Apple Watch to make and receive calls over Wi-Fi instead of the cellular network—even when your paired iPhone is not with you or is turned off. “

EXACTLY. Please preach on. Either phone is flopping in my pocket or I have to strap on a backpack to throw it in. Ready to leave it home only missing more tons of music to choose from

If you were a runner you wouldn't say that. Carrying your phone when you run is an encumberment no matter how you look at it. For anyone who exercises will appreciate the LTE, and that's a huge segment of the population. Apple knows what they are doing and who they are targeting with this device. It's NOT aimed at the dodo that wants to talk to his/her wrist, it's aimed to move the needle in fitness wearable market and take on the competition. e.g. Garmin.
