Im 17 and im not going to lie, i get everything handed to me from my dad.

I actually have a system i go through when i ask him for somehting.

Though, i did have a paperroute when i was like 14. Hated every second of it. Told my dad that if he didnt let me quite i would kill myself, lol.

However, im not a spoiled brat. I only spend money when i really want something (which to be totally honest isnt too often). I have a little envlope in my closet that has around 3k dollars in it (So yeah, if u decide to rob my house, there you go :p )

Im currently convincing him to buy me a car. And i do actually need it, as im going to be taking a couple of classes at the university next year,so yeah no matter what ill get a car

Edit:
Btw, does anyone know how old you need to be to work in retail? I have no intention of working at a fast food place at all.

i didn't read all the posts...but don't kids mow lawns for cash anymore?? I'm in my 20's now but I used to mow a ton of lawns that were within walking distance (before i could drive)...i actually made pretty good cash doing that.

I work for a company called REPS. We stock the cd's at walmarts and kmarts. Its a really simple job and nice to have while in college. I get like $10.50 an hour and its not bad at all. I payed for all $2700 of my mbp with doing that, working maintenance at a summer camp and selling on ebay.

Gotta tell you that says spoiled brat all over it. You need to learn work ethic and investment. I'm 18 and I have payed for my car, $2700 macbook pro, $800 video camera and $400 video camera as well as a $250 ipod. All of that money was saved up through working jobs. Oh and i pay for car insurance and gas which sucks but it teaches you money management.

I would do that but in my area everyone has a contractor do it for them.

My friends parents make her pay for gas, insurance, clothes, and everything else on her own. Now that, to me, screams child abuse.

Working for yourself is usually the most rewarding - I've been doing freelance computer work since 13...you have to be driven in order to achieve your goals. I charge anywhere from $25-30 an hour ($75 on rare occasions) which is half the normal going rate, but I've found that lower pricing tends to attract more clients and recurrent calls.

I did work at a local car wash for two years and made below minimum wage - $5.25. The company sidestepped the requirements since we received tips in one of the three rotating positions, but they weren't required to rotate the employees, so they often played favorites. It is/was probably the worst job a teenager could have; we worked around corrosive chemicals, heavy (antiquated) equipment, and stayed open when temperatures reached -20F (ever powerwash outdoors and have ice frozen up to your a**?). The icing on the cake was the danger that elderly and clueless drivers presented to the employees; in a one month period two employees were hit by drivers not paying attention as they left the belt.

Long story short...don't chase the money and find something you can devote yourself to.

What the crap is everyone selling on ebay?! The pay in this valley I live in is absolutly terrible. I need a way to be able to make more money. Up until winter break from school I was too poor to even buy food. I had to steal from my mom when I went to her house. I was able to work a few more hours during that break to get caught up on some bills and such and I'm doing ok now, but new toys are always fun.

No, thats good parenting. They teach their kids good habits at an early age.

I'd like to think the right balance lies somewhere in between your views and the views of Nabooly. Of course it's not child abuse, but I think that if the parents can provide some of these things to their children while still making sure the kids know the value of hard work and money, it's a pretty good compromise.

Have a good knowledge of all Apple's products and be good at talking to people:)
Alright thanks :D

Well I can no longer sell chocolates at my school, they don't allow it anymore (not even for clubs!) So I have lost basically my only source of steady income that I had. I made pretty good money that way. Now my only chance at getting closer to the amount I need to buy a Macbook is [by winning contests]. (URL removed by moderator)

Does anyone know if online surveys actually pay?

Not that I'm thinking of it, I'm just amazed it can really be that easy to make cash online.

There are acctually a lot of people at my school who buy cans of Coke and sweets for like 20p and sell at school for 50p, its not allowed but since when did that stop anyone :D

Yup I've made a nice amount of money online. Not only through surveys but just clicking ads and stuff on PTC sites.

PowerFullMac: Well same at my school, but now if they see anyone selling they just take the box of chocolates. And I don't want to risk losing the money I spend on purchasing the box.

No, Schnebar is right. You should study instead of chasing after minimum wage jobs which is myopic. I know a bunch of my friends in high school started working at theaters and fast food places. After a while, their goals in life became wanting to become managers instead of going to college.

work has never hurt anybody, speaking as someone who has worked minimum wage jobs while going to college

i mean studying doesnt pay the rent...

I hear people say "burger flipper" when they mean any low-paying food service job. Who has had that kind of job? What's it like?

I work as a sort of support-contact for a mentaly disabeled kid. We just hang out, watch movies, play Xbox, go swimming and do whatever, and the state pays me for it. Its pretty sweet, and it´s a win-win because he really doesen´t have a lot of freinds. I don´t make A LOT of money though, so Ive been thinking about working at the speaker-factory this summer as well. I did that last year and it´s a decent job

Local photography
Graphic design over the internet (PayPal FTW!)

I worked 7 months at a coffee shop for my MBP/Guitars/Camera
Then with the rest of the money I made doing photography I saved some and bought my iBook G3 for school and built a new gaming PC.

A small allowance which I use to pay most of my cell phone bill.

You bought a iBook G3! Using money? I'm assuming you done that 3 years ago, right?

And to everyone who said that people dont sell stuff in their schools because stuff gets confiscated (too lazy to quote) then the smae in my school but people obviously dont care so much, and if its not open it wont get taken genrally. There is a boy in my school who is like a shop, who brings 10 Fantas, Vimtos, Galaxys, Snickers etc. every day!
